FICTION OF THE SELF: A GLANCE AT NANCY HUSTON’S MARCAS DE NASCENÇA

This paper analyzes two works of the canadian writer Nancy Huston: Marcas de nascença and A espécie fabuladora. The main idea is to support the reading of the former work based on the reflections raised by the latter, especially regarding the aspect concerning issues such as the Meaning and the (re) invention of the self. The relevance of these concepts will be effective in an immersion in the universe of the four main characters of the novel Marcas de nascença: Sun, Randall, Sadie and Kristina. The paper focuses on seeking the essence of Meaning in the life of each one of these characters, always considering two vital and non-discernible ​​aspects: time and space in each of them. Therefore, literature and culture concepts will be considered such as the concept of Americanness as well as the Americanization, Identity, Fiction and Recognition. Thus, this assay is divided into two parts. The first one envisions the idea matter expressed by Huston in A espécie fabuladora - the ceaseless quest for Meaning culminating in identity shaping – in order to seek understanding from this point of view the occurrence of certain cultural phenomena of which some characters from Marcas de nascença are an expression. The second part observes each of the four main characters and strengthens the suggested initial idea (that the book's characters are constituent parts of a behavioral matrix vital to human existence), then filling the gaps of the two themes developed: the birthmarks transmitted throughout four generations and how these marks are recorded over fifty-six years of history. 

THE DAILY EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING OF READING IN THE LIBRARY E. E. TANCREDO NEVES: AN EXPERIMENT IN COMMUNITY SCHOOL DOURADOS - MS

This article is the work part of the research "Representations of literary readings built from the history and memory in the libraries of the school community in Golden-MS." We analyzed the documentation of reading projects that fostered the creation and activities of the library, as the practices of teaching reading in the daily interface with the formation of the readers in their respective school sponsor. The projects were analyzed training reading "Project Reading Elementary Education 1-5 º Ano" and "Teaching the World to Read", developed by the school library EE Tancredo Neve of state schools of Golden-MS. We conducted research also stocks the conditions of libraries and reading modes they oportunizaram through access to the literary estate and from the social practices of reading encouragement fostered between the library and classrooms. A literary collection needs to be added to the mediation practices reading the contribution of an effective training readers in school communities through the presence and role of the school library.

THE GATHERING, OF ANNE ENRIGHT: A READING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE NEW HISTORICISM

After winning The Man Booker Prize, a prestigious English literary prize, with The Gathering, the Irish writer Anne Enright has achieved a considerable international prominence as a writer in the contemporary literary scene. The book tells the history of Veronica Hegarty, narrator and protagonist, who, after her brother’s suicide, goes through a difficult period in order to deal with the event. During this period, she reveals the history and conflicts of three generations of her family. This paper aims to present an analysis of this novel in the light of New Historicism as an introduction to its interpretation.

POPULAR METAPHORICAL CREATIONS: THE CASE OF ESPADRILLES IN PARANÁ AND LONDRINA

This article aims at analyzing the lexical maps of three linguistic atlases from Paraná: two related to the city of Londrina (AGUILERA, 1987 and ROMANO, 2012) and one related to the State of Paraná, the Linguistic Atlas of Paraná (AGUILERA, 1994), concerning the variants for espadrilles. As these are popular shoes that are falling out of use in Paraná, with this work our objective is to verify and discuss: (i) by means of real time and apparent time research (LABOV, 1996 [1972]), in two synchronies, the changes and resistances of the lexical units in the speech of people from Londrina; (ii) the lexical collection found in the three atlases and its dicionarization; (iii) how the creation of popular forms to name such popular shoes at the beginning of the colonization in the north of Paraná happens
