Purpose: To construct a cluster model or a gene signature for Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) using pathways analysis in order to identify some potential biomarkers that may be used for early detection of SJS and epidermal necrolysis (TEN) manifestations. Methods: Gene expression profiles of GSE12829 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database. A total of 193 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained. We applied these genes to geneMANIA database, to remove ambiguous and duplicated genes, and after that, characterized the gene expression profiles using geneMANIA, DAVID, REACTOME, STRING and GENECODIS which are online software and databases. Results: Out of 193 genes, only 91 were used (after removing the ambiguous and duplicated genes) for topological analysis. It was found by geneMANIA database search that majority of these genes were coexpressed yielding 84.63 % co-expression. It was found that ten genes were in Physical interactions comprising almost 14.33 %. There were < 1 % pathway and genetic interactions with values of 0.97 and 0.06 %, respectively. Final analyses revealed that there are two clusters of gene interactions and 13 genes were shown to be in evident relationship of interaction with regards to hypersensitivity. Conclusion: Analysis of differential gene expressions by topological and database approaches in the current study reveals 2 gene network clusters. These genes are CD3G, CD3E, CD3D, TK1, TOP2A, CDK1, CDKN3, CCNB1, and CCNF. There are 9 key protein interactions in hypersensitivity reactions and may serve as biomarkers for SJS and TEN. Pathways related gene clusters has been identified and a genetic model to predict SJS and TEN early incidence using these biomarker genes has been developed.

Background: Plasmodium falciparum, the most dangerous malaria parasite species to humans remains an important public health concern in Okelele, a rural community in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. There is however little information about the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum in Nigeria. Objective: To determine the population genomic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum in malaria patients attending Okelele Community Healthcare Centre, Okelele, Ilorin, Kwara State. Methods: In this study, 50 Plasmodium falciparum strains Merozoite Surface Protein 1, Merozoite Surface Protein 2 and Glutamate Rich Protein were analysed from Okelele Health Centre, Okelele, Ilorin, Nigeria. Genetic diversity of P. falciparum isolates were analysed from nested polymerase chain reactions (PCR) of the MSP-1 (K1, MAD 20 and RO33), MSP-2 (FC27 and 3D7) and Glutamate Rich Protein allelic families respectively. Results: Polyclonal infections were more in majority of the patients for MSP-1 allelic families while monoclonal infections were more for MSP-2 allelic families. Multiplicity of infection for MSP-1, MSP-2 and GLURP were 1.7, 1.8 and 2.05 respectively Conclusion: There is high genetic diversity in MSP – 2 and GLURP allelic families of Plasmodium falciparum isolates from Okelele Health Centre, Ilorin, Nigeria.

Introduction: Mutations in the leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 gene (LRRK2 or Dardarin) are considered to be a common cause of autosomal dominant and sporadic Parkinson´s disease, but the prevalence of these mutations varies among populations. Objective: To analyzed the frequency of the LRRK2 p.G2019S mutation (c.6055G>A transition) in a sample of Colombian patients. Methods: In the present study we have analyzed the frequency of the LRRK2 p.G2019S mutation in 154 patients with familial or sporadic Parkinson Disease, including early and late onset patients, and 162 normal controls. Results: Our results show occurrence of this mutation in two cases (2/154, 1.3%) with classical Parkinson´s signs, and one completely asymptomatic control (1/162, 0.6%). Conclusion: The p.G2019S mutation is not an important causal factor of Parkinson Disease in Colombia having similar frequencies to those reported in other Latin American populations.
