Background: Studentsalcohol and khat use have been associated with various health related problems. However, its magnitude and associated factors among Ethiopian students are not yet well documented. Objective: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of alcohol use, khat chewing and its associated factors among Hawassa University students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 2011. Multistage stratified sampling technique was employed to select 590 students. Self administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Data was entered and analysed by SPSS version 20.0. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify the association of different variables. Results: The current prevalence of student’s alcohol and khat use were 29.5% (95% CI: 25.8-33.3) and 16.3% (95% CI: 13.7- 20.0) respectively. Being male (AOR 1.8; 95% CI 1.1-3.0) and living alone (AOR 20.1; 95% CI 2.5-166.7) had a higher odds of alcohol use. Similarly, family substance use history (AOR 4.8; 95% CI 2.5-9.3) and peer influence (AOR 4.6; 95% CI 2.3-9.0) had also higher odds of khat use. Conclusion and recommendation: The proportion of student’s khat chewing and alcohol use was significant. Hence, higher education in collaboration with other stakeholders should work on convincing students about the ill effects of these substances.

Background The growing global childhood obesity pandemic has not spared lowincome countries like Malawi, where 8% of children below the age of five years are overweight. Globally, regular consumption of sweetened beverages is implicated among the factors that fuel childhood obesity. Despite the growing problem, there are no local studies on any aspect of sweetened beverage consumption among children in Malawi that could help in guiding interventions and public health nutrition policies. Aim We aimed to assess sweetened beverage consumption among school-going children in Chilinde, a densely populated township in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Methods A total of 60 school-going children whose caregivers gave verbal consent were included, and a structured questionnaire was administered to the caregiver (or other knowledgeable and responsible member of the household) of each eligible child. Results Our results showed that 50 of the 60 children sampled were consuming a wide-range of sweetened beverages on a regular basis on any day of the week, mostly during meal times (n = 23), before going to school (n = 22), and after school (n = 19). One-third of the children were reportedly consuming up to 300 mL of several sweetened beverages per day. Conclusion Like in many countries around the world, consumption of sweetened beverages appears to be common among young school-going children in this urban setting in Malawi. As the country builds public health responses to the growing problem of non-communicable diseases, early preventive interventions among children should be given priority.

Background and Aim: The prevalence of alcohol use has increased globally. Out-of-school youth are a vulnerable group who might have missed opportunities for learning healthy behaviours in a formal school environment. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk perception, pattern of use, and correlates of alcohol use among out-of-school youth in Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 380 out-of-school youth in motor parks in Lagos State, Nigeria, using interviewer administered questionnaires. Results: The lifetime prevalence of alcohol use was 61.1%, while 55.5% were current drinkers. Beer (57.3%) was the most consumed type of alcohol, followed by distilled spirits (29.8%). Using the CAGE scoring system, more than half (57.8%) of the current drinkers had a drinking problem. Almost three quarters (70.1%) had experienced at least one episode of alcohol intoxication within the past month. A considerable number of current drinkers (63.5%) desired to reduce their alcohol intake or stop drinking, while 45.5% had made unsuccessful attempts to do so within the past year. Only 28.9% had received assistance to quit or reduce their drinking and of these less than half (39.3%) received assistance from a professional or healthcare worker. Males were more likely to be current drinkers and to have experienced episodes of alcohol intoxication. Parental and peer drinking were associated with alcohol use but not with intoxication. Conclusions: It is important to design specific programmes to reduce alcohol use among out-of-school youth in these settings.

Objetivo: Associar fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT) com variáveis sociodemográficas de servidores de uma instituição pública de ensino superior. Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado no período de 2012 a 2013. Utilizou-se um questionário com variáveis sociodemográficas, fatores de risco para DCNT e aferição de peso e estatura. Classificou-se o estado nutricional de acordo com o índice de massa corporal. Analisaram-se os dados pelos programas Epi-Info 3.2.1 e Bioestat 5.0. As associações foram verificadas pelos testes qui-quadrado de Yates, de tendência e exato de Fisher (p≤0,05). Resultados: Participaram 225 servidores, maioria de mulheres (64,4%), na faixa etária entre 45-54 anos (37,3%) e escolaridade superior a 12 anos de estudo (85,8%). O sexo associou-se ao excesso de peso (p=0,034), consumo diário de leite integral (p=0,023), consumo insuficiente de frutas, legumes e verduras - FLV (p=0,020) e consumo insuficiente de feijão (p=0,000), sendo mais frequentes entre mulheres. Entre os homens, foi mais frequente o consumo excessivo de bebida alcoólica (p=0,000). O excesso de peso associou-se à faixa etária (p=0,008). O hábito de fumar (p=0,004) e o consumo diário de leite integral (p=0,016) apresentaram associação com a escolaridade. Conclusão: Encontrou-se elevada prevalência de fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não transmissíveis na amostra estudada, com associação para sexo, faixa etária e escolaridade. O excesso de peso apresentou maior ocorrência nas mulheres e nas idades acima de 45 anos, hábitos alimentares inadequados no sexo feminino, maior ingestão de bebida alcoólica no masculino e hábito de fumar nos indivíduos com maior escolaridade.
