Binary skutterudite CoSb3 nanoparticles were synthesized by solvothermal method. The nanostructuring of CoSb3 material was achieved by the inclusion of various kinds of additives. X-ray diffraction examination indicated the formation of the cubic phase of CoSb3. Structural analysis by transmission electron microscopy analysis further confirmed the formation of crystalline CoSb3 nanoparticles with high purity. With the assistance of additives, CoSb3nanoparticles with size as small as 10 nm were obtained. The effect of the nanostructure of CoSb3on the UV–visible absorption and luminescence was studied. The nanosized CoSb3 skutterudite may find application in developing thermoelectric devices with better efficiency. K

Neural crest cells originate from the dorsal most region of the embryonic neural tube. These cells migrate into several embryonic locations and differentiate into a variety of cell types. Cardiac neural crest (CNC) cells are a set of neural crest progenitors that aid in the proper formation of the cardiac septum, which separates the pulmonary from the systemic circulation. We have used Splotch mice to investigate whether the murine CNC cells play a role during the development oft he myocardium and the conduction system. Splotch mice carry a mutation in the P AX3 transcription factor, and display a problem in CNC cell migration. A scanning-electron-microscopy analysis of Splotch mutant-embryonic-hearts reveals abnormalities in the interventricular septum. In addition, the right and left ventricular cavities appear dilated relative to a wild type heart. Hoechst nuclei staining of Splotch heart cryosections demonstrates a decreased number of cardiomyocytes and a corresponding thinner ventricular wall. The absence of Connexin 40 in the ventricles of Splotch mutants, suggests conduction system defects. These results support the evidence that CNC cell signaling plays a role in modulating the growth and development of murine cardiomyocytes and their differentiation into conductile cells.

In 1972 the ionized cluster beam (ICB) deposition technique was introduced as a new method for thin film deposition. At that time the use of clusters was postulated to be able to enhance film nucleation and adatom surface mobility, resulting in high quality films. Although a few researchers reported singly ionized clusters containing 10$\sp2$-10$\sp3$ atoms, others were unable to repeat their work. The consensus now is that film effects in the early investigations were due to self-ion bombardment rather than clusters. Subsequently in recent work (early 1992) synthesis of large clusters of zinc without the use of a carrier gas was demonstrated by Gspann and repeated in our laboratory. Clusters resulted from very significant changes in two source parameters. Crucible pressure was increased from the earlier 2 Torr to several thousand Torr and a converging-diverging nozzle 18 mm long and 0.4 mm in diameter at the throat was used in place of the 1 mm x 1 mm nozzle used in the early work. While this is practical for zinc and other high vapor pressure materials it remains impractical for many materials of industrial interest such as gold, silver, and aluminum. The work presented here describes results using gold and silver at pressures of around 1 and 50 Torr in order to study the effect of the pressure and nozzle shape. Significant numbers of large clusters were not detected. Deposited films were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) for roughness analysis, and X-ray diffraction.^ Nanometer size islands of zinc deposited on flat silicon substrates by ICB were also studied by atomic force microscopy and the number of atoms/cm$\sp2$ was calculated and compared to data from Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS). To improve the agreement between data from AFM and RBS, convolution and deconvolution algorithms were implemented to study and simulate the interaction between tip and sample in atomic force microscopy. The deconvolution algorithm takes into account the physical volume occupied by the tip resulting in an image that is a more accurate representation of the surface.^ One method increasingly used to study the deposited films both during the growth process and following, is ellipsometry. Ellipsometry is a surface analytical technique used to determine the optical properties and thickness of thin films. In situ measurements can be made through the windows of a deposition chamber. A method for determining the optical properties of a film, that is sensitive only to the growing film and accommodates underlying interfacial layers, multiple unknown underlayers, and other unknown substrates was developed. This method is carried out by making an initial ellipsometry measurement well past the real interface and by defining a virtual interface in the vicinity of this measurement. ^

Fusarium oxysporum forma specialis cubense is a soilborne phytopathogen that infects banana. The true evolutionary identity of this so called species, Fusarium oxysporum, is still unknown. Many techniques have been applied in order to gain insight for the observed genetic diversity of this species. The current classification system is based on vegetative compatibility groups (VCG's). Vegetative compatibility is a self non-self recognition system in which only those belonging to a VCG can form stable heterokaryons, cells containing two distinct nuclei. Heterokaryons in turn, are formed from hypha! anastomosis, the fusion of two hyphae. Furthermore, subsequent to heterokaryon formation potential mechanisms exist which may generate genetic variability. One is through viral transfer upon hyphal anastomosis. The other mechanism is a form of mitotic recombination referred to as the parasexual cycle. Very little research has been performed to directly obser.ve the cellular events; hypha! anastomosis, heterokaryon formation, and the parasexual cycle in Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. The purpose of this research was to design and use methods which would allow for the detection of hypha! anastomosis and heterokaryon formation, as well as any characteristics surrounding this event, within and between VCG's in Foe. First, some general growth properties were recorded: the number of nuclei per hypha, the size ofthe hyphal tip cell, the size of the cell adjacent to the hypha! tip (pre-tip) cell, and the number of cells to the first branch point. Second, four methods were designed in order to assay hyphal anastomosis and heterokaryon formation: 1) pairings on membrane: phase or brightfield microscopy, 2) pairings on membrane: fluorescence microscopy, 3) spore crosses: fluorescence microscopy, and 4) double picks in fractionated MMA. Calbuco Volcano, in Southern Chile, has eruptive products of predominantly andesitic hornblende-bearing lava. A purpose of this work is to understand magmatic processes and how Calbuco magma chemistry is related to the explosive volcanic character. Calbuco lava has a mineral assemblage of plagioclase, hornblende, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, olivine, and magnetite and entrained gabbroic xenoliths with the same mineral assemblage. The presence of hornblende is evidence for dissolved water in the magma. Detailed petrographic/textural analysis has been done using petrographic microscopy and back-scattered electron imaging (BSE); geochemical analysis by electron microprobe (EPMA). Major findings include 1) that hornblende and hornblende-bearing gabbroic cumulates crystallize from Calbuco magma, 2) that plagioclase grains are compositionally zoned, recording evidence of temperature, chemical, and water content fluctuations in the magma, and 3) that hornblende is unstable under upper magma chamber conditions at Calbuco, and is breaking down into plagioclase, olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and magnetite in the magma.
