Mn+1AXn compounds, the ternary layered nanolaminates have gathered momentum in the last decade since its advent because of their unusual but exciting properties. These technologically important compounds combine some of the best properties of metals and ceramics. Like ceramics they are refractory, oxidation resistant, elastically stiff and relatively light. They also exhibit metallic properties like excellent machinability, thermal and electrical conductivity. This dissertation concentrates on the synthesis of germanium-based 211 Mn+1AXn compounds. The main objective of the research was to synthesize predominantly single phase samples of Cr2GeC, V2GeC and Ti2GeC. Another goal was to study the effect of solid substitutions on the M-site of Mn+1AXn compounds with Ge as an A-element. This study is in itself the first to demonstrate the synthesis of (Cr0.5V0.5)2GeC a novel Mn+1AXn compound. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis were employed to confirm the presence of predominantly single phase samples of M2GeC compounds where M = Ti, V, Cr and (Cr 0.5V0.5). A large part of the dissertation also focuses on the effect of the compressibility on the Ge-based 211 Mn+1AXn compounds with the aid of diamond anvil cell and high energy synchrotron radiation. This study also concentrates on the stability of these compounds at high temperature and thereby determines its suitability as high temperature structural materials. In order to better understand the effect of substitutions on A-site of 211 Mn+1 AXn compounds under high pressure and high temperature, a comparison is made with previously reported 211 Mn+1AXn compounds with Al, Ga and S as A-site elements.

Hydrogen can be an unlimited source of clean energy for future because of its very high energy density compared to the conventional fuels like gasoline. An efficient and safer way of storing hydrogen is in metals and alloys as hydrides. Light metal hydrides, alanates and borohydrides have very good hydrogen storage capacity, but high operation temperatures hinder their application. Improvement of thermodynamic properties of these hydrides is important for their commercial use as a source of energy. Application of pressure on materials can have influence on their properties favoring hydrogen storage. Hydrogen desorption in many complex hydrides occurs above the transition temperature. Therefore, it is important to study the physical properties of the hydride compounds at ambient and high pressure and/or high temperature conditions, which can assist in the design of suitable storage materials with desired thermodynamic properties. ^ The high pressure-temperature phase diagram, thermal expansion and compressibility have only been evaluated for a limited number of hydrides so far. This situation serves as a main motivation for studying such properties of a number of technologically important hydrides. Focus of this dissertation was on X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy studies of Mg2FeH6, Ca(BH4) 2, Mg(BH4)2, NaBH4, NaAlH4, LiAlH4, LiNH2BH3 and mixture of MgH 2 with AlH3 or Si, at different conditions of pressure and temperature, to obtain their bulk modulus and thermal expansion coefficient. These data are potential source of information regarding inter-atomic forces and also serve as a basis for developing theoretical models. Some high pressure phases were identified for the complex hydrides in this study which may have better hydrogen storage properties than the ambient phase. The results showed that the highly compressible B-H or Al-H bonds and the associated bond disordering under pressure is responsible for phase transitions observed in brorohydrides or alanates. Complex hydrides exhibited very high compressibility suggesting possibility to destabilize them with pressure. With high capacity and favorable thermodynamics, complex hydrides are suitable for reversible storage. Further studies are required to overcome the kinetic barriers in complex hydrides by catalytic addition. A comparative study of the hydride properties with that of the constituting metal, and their inter relationships were carried out with many interesting features.^

In this thesis, results of the investigation of a new low-dimensional cobaltates Ba2-xSrxCoO 4 are presented. The synthesis of both polycrystalline and single crystalline compounds using the methods of conventional solid state chemical reaction and floating-zone optical furnace is first introduced. Besides making polycrystalline powders, we successfully, for the first time, synthesized large single crystals of Ba2CoO4. Single crystals were also obtained for Sr doped Ba2-xSrxCoO 4. Powder and single crystal x-ray diffraction results indicate that pure Ba2CoO4 has a monoclinic structure at room temperature. With Sr doping, the lattice structure changes to orthorhombic when x ⥠0.5 and to tetragonal when x = 2.0. In addition, Ba2CoO4 and Sr2CoO4, have completely different basic building blocks in the structure. One is CoO4 tetrahedron and the later is CoO6 octahedron, respectively. Electronic and magnetic properties were characterized and discussed. The magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity show that Ba2CoO4 has an antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state with an AF ordering temperature TN = 25 K. However, the magnitude of the Néel temperature TN is significantly lower than the Curie-Weiss temperature (:&thetas;: ∼ 110 K), suggesting either reduced-dimensional magnetic interactions and/or the existence of magnetic frustration. The AF interaction persists in all the samples with different doping concentrations. The Néel temperature doesn't vary much in the monoclinic structure regime but decreases when the system enters orthorhombic. Magnetically, Ba2CoO4 has an AF insulating ground state while Sr2CoO4 has a ferromagnetic (FM) metallic ground state. Neutron powder refinement results indicate a magnetic structure with the spin mostly aligned along the a-axis. The result from a μ-spin rotation/relaxation (μ+SR) experiment agrees with our refinement. It confirms the AF order in the ab -plane. We also studied the spin dynamics and its anisotropy in the AF phase. The results from inelastic neutron scattering show that spin waves have a clear dispersion along a-axis but not along c-axis, indicating spin anisotropy. This work finds the strong spin-lattice coupling in this novel complex material. The interplay between the two degrees of freedom results an interesting phase diagram. Further research is needed when large single crystal samples are available.

Small devices, in the range of nanometers, are playing a major role in today's technology. The field of nanotechnology is concerned with materials and systems whose structures and components exhibit novel and significantly improved physical, chemical and biological properties, phenomena and processes due to their small nanoscale size. Researches more and more are finding that structural features in the range of about 1 to 100 nanometers behave quite differently than isolated molecules (1 nanometer) or bulk materials. For comparison, a 10 nanometer structure is 1000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. The virtues of working in the nanodomain are increasingly recognized by the scientific community and discussed in the popular press. The use of such devices is expected to revolutionize our industries and lives. ^ This work mainly focuses on the fabrication, characterization and discovery of new nanostructured thin films. This research consists of the design of a new high-deposition rate nanoparticle machine for depositing nanostructured films from beams of nanoparticles and investigation film's unique optical and physical properties.^ A high-deposition rate nanoparticle machine was designed, built and successfully tested. Different nanostructured thin films were deposited from Copper, Gold, Iron and Zirconium targets with the grain size of between 1 to 20 nm under different conditions. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed nanoscale grain size structures of deposited films. The optical properties of the nanostructured films deposited from copper, Iron and Zirconium targets were significantly different from optical properties of bulk and thin films. Zr, Cu and Fe films were transparent. Gold films revealed an epitaxial contact with the silicon substrate with interesting crystal structures. ^ The new high-deposition rate nanoparticle machine was able to deposit new nanostructured films with different properties from bulk and thin films reported in the literatures. ^

The present research concentrates on the fabrication of bulk aluminum matrix nanocomposite structures with carbon nanotube reinforcement. The objective of the work was to fabricate and characterize multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced hypereutectic Al-Si (23 wt% Si, 2 wt% Ni, 1 wt% Cu, rest Al) nanocomposite bulk structure with nanocrystalline matrix through thermal spray forming techniques viz. plasma spray forming (PSF) and high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray forming. This is the first research study, which has shown that thermal spray forming can be successfully used to synthesize carbon nanotube reinforced nanocomposites. Microstructural characterization based on quantitative microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms (i) retention and macro/sub-macro level homogenous distribution of multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the Al-Si matrix and (ii) evolution of nanostructured grains in the matrix. Formation of ultrathin β-SiC layer on MWCNT surface, due to chemical reaction of Si atoms diffusing from Al-Si alloy and C atoms from the outer walls of MWCNTs has been confirmed theoretically and experimentally. The presence of SiC layer at the interface improves the wettability and the interfacial adhesion between the MWCNT reinforcement and the Al-Si matrix. Sintering of the as-sprayed nanocomposites was carried out in an inert environment for further densification. As-sprayed PSF nanocomposite showed lower microhardness compared to HVOF, due to the higher porosity content and lower residual stress. The hardness of the nanocomposites increased with sintering time due to effective pore removal. Uniaxial tensile test on CNT-bulk nanocomposite was carried out, which is the first ever study of such nature. The tensile test results showed inconsistency in the data attributed to inhomogeneous microstructure and limitation of the test samples geometry. The elastic moduli of nanocomposites were computed using different micromechanics models and compared with experimentally measured values. The elastic moduli of nanocomposites measured by nanoindentation technique, increased gradually with sintering attributed to porosity removal. The experimentally measured values conformed better with theoretically predicted values, particularly in the case of Hashin-Shtrikman bound method.

The objective of this research is to develop nanoscale ultrasensitive transducers for detection of biological species at molecular level using carbon nanotubes as nanoelectrodes. Rapid detection of ultra low concentration or even single DNA molecules are essential for medical diagnosis and treatment, pharmaceutical applications, gene sequencing as well as forensic analysis. Here the use of functionalized single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) as nanoscale detection platform for rapid detection of single DNA molecules is demonstrated. The detection principle is based on obtaining electrical signal from a single amine terminated DNA molecule which is covalently bridged between two ends of an SWNT separated by a nanoscale gap. The synthesis, fabrication, chemical functionalization of nanoelectrodes and DNA attachment were optimized to perform reliable electrical characterization these molecules. Using this detection system fundamental study on charge transport in DNA molecule of both genomic and non genomic sequences is performed. We measured an electrical signal of about 30 pA through a hybridized DNA molecule of 80 base pair in length which encodes a portion of sequence of H5N1 gene of avian Influenza A virus. Due the dynamic nature of the DNA molecules the local environment such as ion concentration, pH and temperature significantly influence its physical properties. We observed a decrease in DNA conductance of about 33% in high vacuum conditions. The counterion variation was analyzed by changing the buffer from sodium acetate to tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, which resulted in a two orders of magnitude increase in the conductivity of the DNA. The fabrication of large array of identical SWNT nanoelectrodes was achieved by using ultralong SWNTs. Using these nanoelectrode array we have investigated the sequence dependent charge transport in DNA. A systematic study performed on PolyG - PolyC sequence with varying number of intervening PolyA - PolyT pairs showed a decrease in electrical signal from 180 pA (PolyG - PolyC) to 30 pA with increasing number of the PolyA - PolyT pairs. This work also led to the development of ultrasensitive nanoelectrodes based on enzyme functionalized vertically aligned high density multiwalled CNTs for electrochemical detection of cholesterol. The nanoelectrodes exhibited selectively detection of cholesterol in the presence of common interferents found in human blood.

In the current age of fast-depleting conventional energy sources, top priority is given to exploring non-conventional energy sources, designing highly efficient energy storage systems and converting existing machines/instruments/devices into energy-efficient ones. â˜Energy efficiencyâ is one of the important challenges for todayâs scientific and research community, worldwide. In line with this demand, the current research was focused on developing two highly energy-efficient devices â field emitters and Li-ion batteries, using beneficial properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT). Interface-engineered, directly grown CNTs were used as cathode in field emitters, while similar structure was applied as anode in Li-ion batteries. Interface engineering was found to offer minimum resistance to electron flow and strong bonding with the substrate. Both field emitters and Li-ion battery anodes were benefitted from these advantages, demonstrating high energy efficiency. Field emitter, developed during this research, could be characterized by low turn-on field, high emission current, very high field enhancement factor and extremely good stability during long-run. Further, application of 3-dimensional design to these field emitters resulted in achieving one of the highest emission current densities reported so far. The 3-D field emitter registered 27 times increase in current density, as compared to their 2-D counterparts. These achievements were further followed by adding new functionalities, transparency and flexibility, to field emitters, keeping in view of current demand for flexible displays. A CNT-graphene hybrid structure showed appreciable emission, along with very good transparency and flexibility. Li-ion battery anodes, prepared using the interface-engineered CNTs, have offered 140% increment in capacity, as compared to conventional graphite anodes. Further, it has shown very good rate capability and an exceptional â˜zero capacity degradationâ during long cycle operation. Enhanced safety and charge transfer mechanism of this novel anode structure could be explained from structural characterization. In an attempt to progress further, CNTs were coated with ultrathin alumina by atomic layer deposition technique. These alumina-coated CNT anodes offered much higher capacity and an exceptional rate capability, with very low capacity degradation in higher current densities. These highly energy efficient CNT based anodes are expected to enhance capacities of future Li-ion batteries.

Synthesis and functionalization of large-area graphene and its structural, electrical and electrochemical properties has been investigated. First, the graphene films, grown by thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD), contain three to five atomic layers of graphene, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the graphene film is treated with CF4 reactive-ion plasma to dope fluorine ions into graphene lattice as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-photoemission spectroscopy (UPS). Electrochemical characterization reveals that the catalytic activity of graphene for iodine reduction enhanced with increasing plasma treatment time, which is attributed to increase in catalytic sites of graphene for charge transfer. The fluorinated graphene is characterized as a counter-electrode (CE) in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) which shows ~ 2.56% photon to electron conversion efficiency with ~11 mAcmâˆ2 current density. Second, the large scale graphene film is covalently functionalized with HNO3 for high efficiency electro-catalytic electrode for DSSC. The XPS and UPS confirm the covalent attachment of C-OH, C(O)OH and NO3- moieties with carbon atoms through sp2-sp3 hybridization and Fermi level shift of graphene occurs under different doping concentrations, respectively. Finally, CoS-implanted graphene (G-CoS) film was prepared using CVD followed by SILAR method. The G-CoS electro-catalytic electrodes are characterized in a DSSC CE and is found to be highly electro-catalytic towards iodine reduction with low charge transfer resistance (Rct ~5.05 Ωcm 2) and high exchange current density (J0~2.50 mAcm -2). The improved performance compared to the pristine graphene is attributed to the increased number of active catalytic sites of G-CoS and highly conducting path of graphene. We also studied the synthesis and characterization of graphene-carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid film consisting of graphene supported by vertical CNTs on a Si substrate. The hybrid film is inverted and transferred to flexible substrates for its application in flexible electronics, demonstrating a distinguishable variation of electrical conductivity for both tension and compression. Furthermore, both turn-on field and total emission current was found to depend strongly on the bending radius of the film and were found to vary in ranges of 0.8 - 3.1 V/μm and 4.2 - 0.4 mA, respectively.

Advancements in the micro-and nano-scale fabrication techniques have opened up new avenues for the development of portable, scalable and easier-to-use biosensors. Over the last few years, electrodes made of carbon have been widely used as sensing units in biosensors due to their attractive physiochemical properties. The aim of this research is to investigate different strategies to develop functionalized high surface carbon micro/nano-structures for electrochemical and biosensing devices. High aspect ratio three-dimensional carbon microarrays were fabricated via carbon microelectromechanical systems (C-MEMS) technique, which is based on pyrolyzing pre-patterned organic photoresist polymers. To further increase the surface area of the carbon microstructures, surface porosity was introduced by two strategies, i.e. (i) using F127 as porogen and (ii) oxygen reactive ion etch (RIE) treatment. Electrochemical characterization showed that porous carbon thin film electrodes prepared by using F127 as porogen had an effective surface area (Aeff 185%) compared to the conventional carbon electrode. To achieve enhanced electrochemical sensitivity for C-MEMS based functional devices, graphene was conformally coated onto high aspect ratio three-dimensional (3D) carbon micropillar arrays using electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) technique. The amperometric response of graphene/carbon micropillar electrode arrays exhibited higher electrochemical activity, improved charge transfer and a linear response towards H2O2 detection between 250&mgr;M to 5.5mM. Furthermore, carbon structures with dimensions from 50 nano-to micrometer level have been fabricated by pyrolyzing photo-nanoimprint lithography patterned organic resist polymer. Microstructure, elemental composition and resistivity characterization of the carbon nanostructures produced by this process were very similar to conventional photoresist derived carbon. Surface functionalization of the carbon nanostructures was performed using direct amination technique. Considering the need for requisite functional groups to covalently attach bioreceptors on the carbon surface for biomolecule detection, different oxidation techniques were compared to study the types of carbon-oxygen groups formed on the surface and their percentages with respect to different oxidation pretreatment times. Finally, a label-free detection strategy using signaling aptamer/protein binding complex for platelet-derived growth factor oncoprotein detection on functionalized three-dimensional carbon microarrays platform was demonstrated. The sensor showed near linear relationship between the relative fluorescence difference and protein concentration even in the sub-nanomolar range with an excellent detection limit of 5 pmol.

Poor informational reading and writing skills in early grades and the need to provide students more experience with informational text have been identified by research as areas of concern. Wilkinson and Son (2011) support future research in dialogic approaches to investigate the impact dialogic teaching has on comprehension. This study (N = 39) examined the gains in reading comprehension, science achievement, and metacognitive functioning of individual second grade students interacting with instructors using dialogue journals alongside their textbook. The 38 week study consisted of two instructional phases, and three assessment points. After a period of oral metacognitive strategies, one class formed the treatment group (n=17), consisting of two teachers following the co-teaching method, and two classes formed the comparison group ( n=22). The dialogue journal intervention for the treatment group embraced the transactional theory of instruction through the use of dialogic interaction between teachers and students. Students took notes on the assigned lesson after an oral discussion. Teachers responded to students' entries with scaffolding using reading strategies (prior knowledge, skim, slow down, mental integration, and diagrams) modeled after Schraw's (1998) strategy evaluation matrix, to enhance students' comprehension. The comparison group utilized text-based, teacher-led whole group discussion. Data were collected using different measures: (a) Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) Broad Diagnostic Inventory; (b) Scott Foresman end of chapter tests; (c) Metacomprehension Strategy Index (Schmitt, 1990); and (d) researcher-made metacognitive scaffolding rubric. Statistical analyses were performed using paired sample t-tests, regression analysis of covariance, and two way analysis of covariance. Findings from the study revealed that experimental participants performed significantly better on the linear combination of reading comprehension, science achievement, and metacognitive function, than their comparison group counterparts while controlling for pretest scores. Overall, results from the study established that teacher scaffolding using metacognitive strategies can potentially develop students' reading comprehension, science achievement, and metacognitive awareness. This suggests that early childhood students gain from the integration of reading and writing when using authentic materials (science textbooks) in science classrooms. A replication of this study with more students across more schools, and different grade levels would improve the generalizability of these results.
