The objective of this research is to test the effectiveness of a game-based mathematical curriculum Number-Way in preschools for low socioeconomic status (SES) children. This curriculum contains fifteen interesting number games representing four main principles. The result indicated that this curriculum promoted early mathematical competence for preschoolers significantly.

The coastal zone of the Florida Keys features the only living coral reef in the continental United States and as such represents a unique regional environmental resource. Anthropogenic pressures combined with climate disturbances such as hurricanes can affect the biogeochemistry of the region and threaten the health of this unique ecosystem. As such, water quality monitoring has historically been implemented in the Florida Keys, and six spatially distinct zones have been identified. In these studies however, dissolved organic matter (DOM) has only been studied as a quantitative parameter, and DOM composition can be a valuable biogeochemical parameter in assessing environmental change in coastal regions. Here we report the first data of its kind on the application of optical properties of DOM, in particular excitation emission matrix fluorescence with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), throughout these six Florida Keys regions in an attempt to assess spatial differences in DOM sources. Our data suggests that while DOM in the Florida Keys can be influenced by distant terrestrial environments such as the Everglades, spatial differences in DOM distribution were also controlled in part by local surface runoff/fringe mangroves, contributions from seasgrass communities, as well as the reefs and waters from the Florida Current. Application of principal component analysis (PCA) of the relative abundance of EEM-PARAFAC components allowed for a clear distinction between the sources of DOM (allochthonous vs. autochthonous), between different autochthonous sources and/or the diagenetic status of DOM, and further clarified contribution of terrestrial DOM in zones where levels of DOM were low in abundance. The combination between EEM-PARAFAC and PCA proved to be ideally suited to discern DOM composition and source differences in coastal zones with complex hydrology and multiple DOM sources.

The outcome of this research is an Intelligent Retrieval System for Conditions of Contract Documents. The objective of the research is to improve the method of retrieving data from a computer version of a construction Conditions of Contract document. SmartDoc, a prototype computer system has been developed for this purpose. The system provides recommendations to aid the user in the process of retrieving clauses from the construction Conditions of Contract document. The prototype system integrates two computer technologies: hypermedia and expert systems. Hypermedia is utilized to provide a dynamic way for retrieving data from the document. Expert systems technology is utilized to build a set of rules that activate the recommendations to aid the user during the process of retrieval of clauses. The rules are based on experts knowledge. The prototype system helps the user retrieve related clauses that are not explicitly cross-referenced but, according to expert experience, are relevant to the topic that the user is interested in.

Signaling of endothelin-3 (Edn3) through its receptor, endothelin receptor B (EdnrB), has been shown to be indispensable for the development of certain neural crest derivatives. Since no research has been directed to investigate what the downstream targets of this signaling pathway are, the purpose of this study was to identify and characterize genes that are transcriptionally regulated by Edn3 signaling. Data from Differential Display RT-PCR of Edn-3 induced cDNA vs. non-induced cDNA obtained from primary neural crest cultures was analyzed. Thirty bands that were differentially expressed were sequenced and submitted for a homology search (BLAST). Among the genes identified were WSB 1 (a member of the SOCS family of negative regulators) and SPC 12 (the smallest subunit, 12kDa, of mammalian signal peptidase). Using whole-mount in-situ hybridization, the expression patterns of EdnrB, WSB 1 and SPC 12 were characterized. WSB 1 and SPC 12 expression patterns were found to overlap with that of EdnrB, suggesting that Edn3 might regulate the transcription of these genes in specific neural crest derived lineages.
