Archival research was conducted on the inception of preemployment psychological testing, as part of the background screening process, to select police officers for a local police department. Various issues and incidents were analyzed to help explain why this police department progressed from an abbreviated version of a psychological battery, to a much more sophisticated and comprehensive set of instruments. While doubts about psychological exams do exist, research has shown that many are valid and reliable in predicting job performance of police candidates. During a three year period, a police department hired 162 candidates (133 males and 29 females) who received "acceptable" psychological ratings and 71 candidates (58 males and 13 females) who received "marginal" psychological ratings. A document analysis consisted of variables that have been identified as job performance indicators which police psychological testing tries to predict, and "screen in" or "screen out" appropriate applicants. The areas of focus comprised the 6-month police academy, the 4-month Field Training Officer (FTO) Program, the remaining probationary period, and yearly performance up to five years of employment. Specific job performance variables were the final academy grade average, supervisors' evaluation ratings, reprimands, commendations, awards, citizen complaints, time losses, sick time usage, reassignments, promotions, and separations. A causal-comparative research design was used to determine if there were significant statistical differences in these job performance variables between police officers with "acceptable" psychological ratings and police officers with "marginal" psychological ratings. The results of multivariate analyses of variance, t-tests, and chi-square procedures as applicable, showed no significant differences between the two groups on any of the job performance variables.

SmartWater is a chemical taggant used as a crime deterrent. The chemical taggant is a colorless liquid that fluoresces yellow under ultra-violet (UV) light and contains distinctive, identifiable and traceable elemental composition. For instance, upon a break and entry scenario, the burglar is sprayed with a solution that has an elemental signature custom-made to a specific location. The residues of this taggant persist on skin and other objects and can be easily recovered for further analysis. The product has been effectively used in Europe as a crime deterrent and has been recently introduced in South Florida. In 2014, Fourt Lauderdale Police Department reported the use of SmartWater products with a reduction in burglaries of 14% [1]. The International Forensic Research Institute (IFRI) at FIU validated the scientific foundation of the methods of recovery and analysis of these chemical tagging systems using LA-ICP-MS. Analytical figures of merit of the method such as precision, accuracy, limits of detection, linearity and selectivity are reported in this study. Moreover, blind samples were analyzed by LA-ICP-MS to compare the chemical signatures to the companyâs database and evaluate error rates and the accuracy of the method. This study demonstrated that LA-ICP-MS could be used to effectively detect these traceable taggants to assist law enforcement agencies in the United States with cases involving transfer of these forensic coding systems.

The predominant pathogen found in the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The success of the infection is partially due to virulence factor production, which is regulated by quorum sensing (QS) signaling. Currently, antibiotics are used to treat the infection, but resistant forms of P. aeruginosa have evolved, necessitating alternative treatments. Previous animal studies showed that treatment with extracts from the Chinese herb Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer reduced bacterial load resulting in a favorable immune response. It is hypothesized that ginsenosides, the major bioactive compounds in ginseng, is responsible for this effect. This study explores the role of ginseng extracts in attenuating P. aeruginosa virulence. A sequential extraction was performed using hexane, methylene chloride, methanol, and water. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed the methanol and water ginseng extracts contained the known ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, and Rg1⢠All extracts were tested on biomonitor strains of Agrobacterium tumefaciens,Chromobacterium violaceum, and P. aeruginosa. Antibacterial and anti-QS activity were assessed using a disc diffusion assay. This was then followed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) bioautographic assay to further separate active compounds. The hexane and dichloromethane extracts, that lacked ginsenosides, displayed antibacterial activity against C. violaceum, whereas methanol and water extracts had anti-QS activity. The results of the bioassay with the pure ginsenoside standards showed that they lack antibacterial or anti-QS activity. Our results indicate that there are bioactive compounds, other than ginsenosides, that are the cause of antibacterial effects and anti-QS in the ginseng extracts.

Background: Omega-3 fatty acids (n-3) may be protective of cardiovascular risk factors for vulnerable populations. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between n-3 with, C-reactive protein (CRP), and homocysteine (HCY) in Black minorities with and without type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 406 participants: Haitian Americans (HA): n=238. African Americans (AA): n=172. Participants were recruited from a randomly generated mailing lists, local diabetes educators, community health practitioners and advertisements from 2008-2010. Sociodemographics and anthropometrics were collected and used to adjust analyses. All dietary variables were collected using the semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and used to quantify vitamin components. Blood was collected to measure CVD risk factors (blood lipids, HCY, and CRP). Results: African Americans had higher waist circumferences and C-reactive protein and consumed more calories as compared to Haitian Americans. Omega 3 fatty acid intake per calorie did not differ between these ethnicities, yet African Americans with low n-3 intake were three times more likely to have high C-reactive protein as compared to their counterparts [OR=3. 32 (1. 11, 9. 26) p=0.031]. Although homocysteine did not differ by ethnicity, African Americans with low omega 3 intake (<1 g/day) were four times as likely to have high homocysteine (>12 mg/L) as compared to their counterparts, adjusting for confounders [OR=4.63 (1.59, 12.0) p=0.004]. Consumption of n-3 by diabetes status was not associated with C-reactive protein or homocysteine levels. Conclusions: Consumption of n-3 may be protective of cardiovascular risk factors such as C-r

The study examined the associations of anthropometric measures of obesity with high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in Turkish immigrants with type 2 diabetes (T2D) living in the Netherlands. A total of 110 participants, physician-diagnosed with T2D, aged 30 years and older were recruited from multiple sources from The Hague, Netherlands. Serum hs-CRP levels were measured with immunoturbidimetric assay. Glycated hemoglobin (A1C) was determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Measures of obesity: body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were determined. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics, Pearsonâs correlations and multiple linear regressions (MLR) stratified by gender. Hs-CRP was log transformed to achieve normality. Subjects with hs-CRP levels >10 mg/L (nâ=â17) were excluded from the analysis. Females had a higher BMI (pâ=â0.007), HC (pâ<â0.001), and WHtR (pâ=â0.011) as compared to males. Conversely, males had a higher weight (pâ=â0.007), and WHR (pâ<â0.001) than females. MLR showed that after controlling for covariates, log hs-CRP was positively associated with BMI (Bâ=â0.039, SEâ=â0.019, βâ=â0.287, pâ<â0.05), WC (Bâ=â0.025, SEâ=â0.011, βâ=â0.332, pâ<â0.05) and WHtR (Bâ=â4.015, SEâ=â1.464, βâ=â0.376, pâ<â0.01) in females only. Gender-specific associations between obesity measures and hs-CRP level need to be further investigated in the Turkish immigrant population. Hs-CRP assessment may be added as a standard of care for T2D treatment within this population.
