In this paper, a novel approach for character recognition has been presented with the help of genetic operators which have evolved from biological genetics and help us to achieve highly accurate results. A genetic algorithm approach has been described in which the biological haploid chromosomes have been implemented using a single row bit pattern of 315 values which have been operated upon by various genetic operators. A set of characters are taken as an initial population from which various new generations of characters are generated with the help of selection, crossover and mutation. Variations of population of characters are evolved from which the fittest solution is found by subjecting the various populations to a new fitness function developed. The methodology works and reduces the dissimilarity coefficient found by the fitness function between the character to be recognized and members of the populations and on reaching threshold limit of the error found from dissimilarity, it recognizes the character. As the new population is being generated from the older population, traits are passed on from one generation to another. We present a methodology with the help of which we are able to achieve highly efficient character recognition.

After many years of scholar study, manuscript collections continue to be an important source of novel information for scholars, concerning both the history of earlier times as well as the development of cultural documentation over the centuries. D-SCRIBE project aims to support and facilitate current and future efforts in manuscript digitization and processing. It strives toward the creation of a comprehensive software product, which can assist the content holders in turning an archive of manuscripts into a digital collection using automated methods. In this paper, we focus on the problem of recognizing early Christian Greek manuscripts. We propose a novel digital image binarization scheme for low quality historical documents allowing further content exploitation in an efficient way. Based on the existence of closed cavity regions in the majority of characters and character ligatures in these scripts, we propose a novel, segmentation-free, fast and efficient technique that assists the recognition procedure by tracing and recognizing the most frequently appearing characters or character ligatures.

In this paper, a new method for offline handwriting recognition is presented. A robust algorithm for handwriting segmentation has been described here with the help of which individual characters can be segmented from a word selected from a paragraph of handwritten text image which is given as input to the module. Then each of the segmented characters are converted into column vectors of 625 values that are later fed into the advanced neural network setup that has been designed in the form of text files. The networks has been designed with quadruple layered neural network with 625 input and 26 output neurons each corresponding to a character from a-z, the outputs of all the four networks is fed into the genetic algorithm which has been developed using the concepts of correlation, with the help of this the overall network is optimized with the help of genetic algorithm thus providing us with recognized outputs with great efficiency of 71%.

The evaluation from experimental data, of physical quantities, which enter into the electromagnetic Maxwell equations, is described as inverse optical problem. The functional relations between the dependent and independent variables are of transcendental character and numeric procedures for evaluation of the unknowns are largely used. Herein, we discuss a direct approach to the solution, illustrated by a specific example of determination of thin films optical constants from spectrophotometric data. New algorithm is proposed for the parameters evaluation, which does not need an initial guess of the unknowns and does not use iterative procedures. Thus we overcome the intrinsic deficiency of minimization techniques, such as gradient search methods, Simplex methods, etc. The price of it is a need of more computing power, but our algorithm is easily implemented in structures such as grid clusters. We show the advantages of this approach and its potential for generalization to other inverse optical problems.

In this paper, we consider the task of recognizing epigraphs in images such as photos taken using mobile devices. Given a set of 17,155 photos related to 14,560 epigraphs, we used a k-NearestNeighbor approach in order to perform the recognition. The contribution of this work is in evaluating state-of-the-art visual object recognition techniques in this specific context. The experimental results conducted show that Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors obtained aggregating SIFT descriptors is the best choice for this task.
