A Bimodality Test in High Dimensions

We present a test for identifying clusters in high dimensional data based on the k-means algorithm when the null hypothesis is spherical normal. We show that projection techniques used for evaluating validity of clusters may be misleading for such data. In particular, we demonstrate that increasingly well-separated clusters are identified as the dimensionality increases, when no such clusters exist. Furthermore, in a case of true bimodality, increasing the dimensionality makes identifying the correct clusters more difficult. In addition to the original conservative test, we propose a practical test with the same asymptotic behavior that performs well for a moderate number of points and moderate dimensionality. On Averaging Null Sequences of Real-Valued Functions

If ξ is a countable ordinal and (fk) a sequence of real-valued functions we define the repeated averages of order ξ of (fk). By using a partition theorem of Nash-Williams for families of finite subsets of positive integers it is proved that if ξ is a countable ordinal then every sequence (fk) of real-valued functions has a subsequence (f'k) such that either every sequence of repeated averages of order ξ of (f'k) converges uniformly to zero or no sequence of repeated averages of order ξ of (f'k) converges uniformly to zero. By the aid of this result we obtain some results stronger than Mazur’s theorem.

A procedure for calculating critical level and power of likelihood ratio test, based on a Monte-Carlo simulation method is proposed. General principles of software building for its realization are given. Some examples of its application are shown.
