Knowledge Testing in Algorithms – an Experimental Study

With the appearance of INTERNET technologies the developers of algorithm animation systems have shifted to build on-line system with the advantages of platform-independence and open accessibility over earlier ones. As a result, there is ongoing research in the re-design and re-evaluation of AAS in order to transform them in task-oriented environments for design of algorithms in on-line mode. The experimental study reported in the present paper contributes in this research.

Prototyping Adaptive Online Learning Courses

This article describes the process of prototyping adaptive online learning using the authoring tool for developers, which is based on ontologies. The article also gives a brief overview of contemporary situation and describes modern trends of evolution e-learning courses and present standards in this area. It also describes architecture of system VITA II.

About Ontology Application to the Description of Syllabus

Publication describes the experience in application of ontology technique to structuring of educational materials. Several topics of physics were formalized by means of Protégé software tool. Some principal problems in building of knowledge structure were found, so the discussion may interest not only ontology users, but also the developers of ontology tools.

Digital Creativity: Advantages, Problems, Responsibilities

The paper focuses on the rapid development of the digital culture and the challenges it imposes to human creativity. It analyses e-learning, digital entertainment, digital art and the issues of creativity and improvisation. It also presents a classification of the levels in the creative structure including hardware and software tools; product developers; creators and end users. Special attention is paid to the advantages of the new digital culture and the responsibilities of all people who create it or use it. We conclude that more attention should be paid to the threats and to ways of boosting positive creativity in the various fields of application of information and communication technologies.

Towards the Semiotics of Noosphere

Civilization has brought us into the noosphere world. Besides physical, around (and inside of) us exist and function also mental and cultural entities. It is impossible to perform now knowledge acquisition, knowledge base creation and organizational systems management without adequate consideration of object’s noosphere statuses. I tried here to clarify basic viewpoints concerning this issue, hoping that elaboration of common methodological foundations of semiotic modeling will be useful for developers and also for users of new generation automation systems.

Method of Elimination Data Sources Conflicts in Information System

Use of modern object-oriented methods of designing of information systems (IS) both descriptions of interrelations IS and automated with its help business-processes of the enterprises leads to necessity of construction uniform complete IS on the basis of set of local models of such system. As a result of use of such approach there are the contradictions caused by inconsistency of actions of separate developers IS with each other and that is much more important, inconsistency of the points of view of separate users IS. Besides similar contradictions arise while in service IS at the enterprise because of constant change separate business- processes of the enterprise. It is necessary to note also, that now overwhelming majority IS is developed and maintained as set of separate functional modules. Each of such modules can function as independent IS. However the problem of integration of separate functional modules in uniform system can lead to a lot of problems. Among these problems it is possible to specify, for example, presence in modules of functions which are not used by the enterprise to destination, to complexity of information and program integration of modules of various manufacturers, etc. In most cases these contradictions and the reasons, their caused, are consequence of primary representation IS as equilibrium steady system. Approaches to Building Websites for Training People with Special Education Needs

This work discusses several approaches to building websites for training and facilitating people with special education needs (SEN), implemented over the last four years with the authors’ involvement. Achievements are credited and avenues for improvement are suggested, as emphasis is given to technologies and resources of key importance in providing the required level of accessibility. Two instances of learning management systems are considered as tools for developing websites dedicated to training and working with people with SEN. A summary of the recommendations and requirements of developers of such sites is made in view of improving the degree of accessibility.

Extending Object-Oriented Network Protocols via alternative Transportation Bindings (Web Services over XMPP)

Distributed and/or composite web applications are driven by intercommunication via web services, which employ application-level protocols, such as SOAP. However, these protocols usually rely on the classic HTTP for transportation. HTTP is quite efficient for what it does — delivering web page content, but has never been intended to carry complex web service oriented communication. Today there exist modern protocols that are much better fit for the job. Such a candidate is XMPP. It is an XML-based, asynchronous, open protocol that has built-in security and authentication mechanisms and utilizes a network of federated servers. Sophisticated asynchronous multi-party communication patterns can be established, effectively aiding web service developers. This paper’s purpose is to prove by facts, comparisons, and practical examples that XMPP is not only better suited than HTTP to serve as middleware for web service protocols, but can also contribute to the overall development state of web services.

Specifics in Applying Agile Software Methodologies in Portal Solutions

Agile methodologies are becoming more popular in the software development process nowadays. The iterative development lifecycle, openness to frequent changes, tight cooperation with the client and among the software engineers are turning into more and more effective practices and respond to a higher extend to the current business needs. It is natural to raise the question which methodology is the most suitable for use when starting and managing a project. This depends on many factors—product characteristics, technologies used, client’s and developer’s experience, project type. A systematic analysis of the most common problems appearing when developing a particular type of projects—public portal solutions, is proposed. In the case at hand a very close interaction with various types of end users is observed. This is a prerequisite for permanent changes during the development and support cycles, which makes them ideal candidates for using an agile methodology. We will compare the ways in which each methodology addresses the specific problems arising and will finish with ranking them according to their relevance. This might help the project manager in choosing one or a combination of the methodologies.

JSONYA/FN: Functional Computation in JSON

Functional programming has a lot to offer to the developers of global Internet-centric applications, but is often applicable only to a small part of the system or requires major architectural changes. The data model used for functional computation is often simply considered a consequence of the chosen programming style, although inappropriate choice of such model can make integration with imperative parts much harder. In this paper we do the opposite: we start from a data model based on JSON and then derive the functional approach from it. We outline the identified principles and present Jsonya/fn — a low-level functional language that is defined in and operates with the selected data model. We use several Jsonya/fn implementations and the architecture of a recently developed application to show that our approach can improve interoperability and can achieve additional reuse of representations and operations at relatively low cost.
