The room temperature ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]) is used as a ‘green' recyclable alternative to classical molecular solvents for the nucleophilic substitution reaction of a-tosyloxy ketones with potassium salts of aromatic acids. Significant rate enhancement and improved yields have been observed.

The kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene using Re2O7/-Al_2O_3 as the catalyst were investigated under a variety of conditions. The experiments were carried out under high vacuum conditions. The product solutions were characterised by gas liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy. The initial kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene showed that the reaction was first order in the weight of the catalyst and second order in the concentration of 1-hexene. A kinetic scheme which correlated the experimental data with the metallocarbene chain mechanism postulated by Herisson and Chauvin and the kinetics of the reaction was explained using a model based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood theory. The low conversion of 1-hexene to its products is due to termination reactions which most likely occur by the decomposition of the metallocyclobutane intermediate to produce a cyclopropane derivative and an inactive centre. The optimum temperature for the metathesis of 1-hexene over Re_2O_7/-Al2O3 is 45oC and above this temperature, the rate of metathesis decreases rapidly. Co-catalysts alter the active sites for metathesis so that the catalyst is more selective to the metathesis of 1-hexene. However, the regeneration of metathesis activity is much worse for promoted catalysts than for the unpromoted. The synthesis and metathesis of 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (9-decenyl)-1,3-oxazoline and 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (3-pentenyl)-1,3-oxazoline was attempted and the products were analysed by thin layer chromatography, infra-red, 13C and 1H nmr and mass spectroscopy. Obtaining the oxazolines in a good yield with high purity was difficult and consequently metathesis of the impure products did not occur.

The thermal decomposition behavior of 1,2-bis-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) widely used as flame retardant plastics additive was studied by HRTG and differential scanning calorimetries. It was pyrolysed in inert atmosphere at 240 and 340 °C in isothermal conditions, the decomposition products were collected and investigated by means of IR and GC-MS, most of them are identified. It was found that BTBPE mostly evaporates at 240 °C. The decomposition products at 340°C depend on rate of their removal from the hot reaction zone. Main primary decomposition products found in case of rapid removal are tribromophenol and vinyl tribromophenyl ether. Whereas, prolonged contact with heating zone also produces hydrogen bromide, ethylene bromide, polybrominated vinyl phenyl ethers and diphenyl ethers, and dibenzodioxins. The nature of the identified compounds are in accordance with a molecular and radical pyrolysis reaction pathway. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A high-surface-area silicon oximide-based gel [SiOC(H)=NSi]m[Si2N-C(H)=O]n[SiN(H)-C(H)=O]p[SiOC(H)=NH]q[SiNH]r[SiNH2]s[SiNMe2]t was prepared via a formamide-based aminolysis of tris(dimethylamino)silylamine, (Me2N)3SiNH2. The structure of the gel and the mechanism of formation are elucidated. Pyrolysis of the gel at 1000 °C under N2 flow gave an amorphous microporous oxynitride-based glass with a BET surface area of 195 m2 g−1. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2005.

Fast X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that the efficient catalytic destruction of 1,1,1-trichloroethane occurs over Pt{111} surfaces at temperatures as low as 150 K. Decomposition occurs via rapid, sequential C-Cl bond scission to form an alkylidyne surface intermediate that in turn dehydrogenates above room temperature. Atomic chlorine liberated during dehydrochlorination undergoes efficient reaction with surface hydrogen, resulting in the evolution of gaseous HCl and small amounts of ethane, presumably via ethylidyne hydrogenation. Irreversible dehydrogenation of residual hydrocarbon fragments results in significant surface coking above 500 K.

The catalytic destruction of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) over model sulfated Pt(111) surfaces has been investigated by fast X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. TCA adsorbs molecularly over SO4 precovered Pt(111) at 100 K, with a saturation coverage of 0.4 monolayer (ML) comparable to that on the bare surface. Surface crowding perturbs both TCA and SO4 species within the mixed adlayer, evidenced by strong, coverage-dependent C 1s and Cl and S 2p core-level shifts. TCA undergoes complete dechlorination above 170 K, accompanied by C−C bond cleavage to form surface CH3, CO, and Cl moieties. These in turn react between 170 and 350 K to evolve gaseous CO2, C2H6, and H2O. Subsequent CH3 dehydrogenation and combustion occurs between 350 and 450 K, again liberating CO2 and water. Combustion is accompanied by SO4 reduction, with the coincident evolution of gas phase SO2 and CO2 suggesting the formation of a CO−SOx surface complex. Reactively formed HCl desorbs in a single state at 400 K. Only trace (<0.06 ML) residual atomic carbon and chlorine remain on the surface by 500 K.

We report on the record-high pulse energy of nearly 1.7 μJ obtained directly from a self-mode-locked all-fiber erbium laser with a linear-ring cavity owing its extreme elongation up to several kilometers. Specially selected telecommunication fibers, providing large normal net cavity dispersion in the vicinity of 1.55 μm, have been used for this purpose. Along with compensation for polarization instability in the longer linear arm of the cavity, such approach has ensured stable wavebreaking- free mode-locked lasing with an ultra-low pulse repetition rate of 35.1 kHz. © 2010 by Astro Ltd.

The reaction of 1,3-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)-2-propanol (btzpol) with Fe(BF4)2 · 6H2O in acetonitrile yields the remarkable 2D coordination polymer [FeII(btzpol)1.8(btzpol-OBF3)1.2](BF4)0.8 · (H2O)0.8(CH3CN) (1). This compound has been structurally characterized using an X-ray single-crystal synchrotron radiation source. The iron(II) centers are bridged by means of double btzpol bridges along the c direction, and by single btzpol bridges along the b direction. The reaction of part of the ligand with the counterion has forced the compound to crystallize in this extended two dimensional structure. The compound shows spin-transition properties, both induced by temperature and light, with T½ = 112 K and T(LIESST) = 46 K, respectively. The relaxation of the metastable high-spin state created by irradiation is exponential, following an Arrhenius type behavior at high temperature, and dominated by a temperature independent tunneling process at lower temperatures.
