This project evaluates the benefits of meshing existing 11kV radial networks in order to reduce losses and maximise the connection of low carbon distributed generation. These networks are often arranged as radial feeders with normally-open links between two of the feeders; the link is closed only to enable continuity of supply to an isolated portion of a feeder following a fault on the network. However, this link could also be closed permanently thus operating the network as a meshed topology under non-faulted conditions. The study will look at loss savings and the addition of distributed generation on a typical network under three different scenarios; traditional radial feeders, fixed meshed network and a dynamic meshed network. The networks are compared in terms of feeder losses, capacity, voltage regulation and fault levels.

PURPOSE. A methodology for noninvasively characterizing the three-dimensional (3-D) shape of the complete human eye is not currently available for research into ocular diseases that have a structural substrate, such as myopia. A novel application of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition and analysis technique is presented that, for the first time, allows the 3-D shape of the eye to be investigated fully. METHODS. The technique involves the acquisition of a T2-weighted MRI, which is optimized to reveal the fluid-filled chambers of the eye. Automatic segmentation and meshing algorithms generate a 3-D surface model, which can be shaded with morphologic parameters such as distance from the posterior corneal pole and deviation from sphericity. Full details of the method are illustrated with data from 14 eyes of seven individuals. The spatial accuracy of the calculated models is demonstrated by comparing the MRI-derived axial lengths with values measured in the same eyes using interferometry. RESULTS. The color-coded eye models showed substantial variation in the absolute size of the 14 eyes. Variations in the sphericity of the eyes were also evident, with some appearing approximately spherical whereas others were clearly oblate and one was slightly prolate. Nasal-temporal asymmetries were noted in some subjects. CONCLUSIONS. The MRI acquisition and analysis technique allows a novel way of examining 3-D ocular shape. The ability to stratify and analyze eye shape, ocular volume, and sphericity will further extend the understanding of which specific biometric parameters predispose emmetropic children subsequently to develop myopia. The distribution and density of diffuse, primitive and classic β-amyloid (Aβ) deposits in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) was studied in cases of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) with and without associated Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 15 cases of sporadic AD. In the 'pure' DLB cases, virtually no Aβ deposits were observed in the CA regions of the hippocampus or dentate gyrus whereas deposits were distributed throughout the MTL in DLB/AD and AD cases. Densities of diffuse and primitive Aβ deposits were similar in AD and DLB/AD cases but density was significantly reduced in the 'pure' DLB cases. The density of the classic deposits was significantly reduced in DLB cases with or without associated AD compared with AD cases. These results suggest that Aβ deposition in the MTL in 'pure' DLB cases is similar to that of elderly non-demented patients while, with the exception of the classic deposits, Aβ deposition in DLB/AD cases is similar to that in cases of AD alone.

The density of diffuse, primitive, classic and compact β-amyloid (β/A4) deposits was estimated in the medial temporal lobe in elderly non-demented brains and in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the non-demented cases, β/A4 deposits were absent in the hippocampus but in 8/14 cases they were present in the adjacent cortical regions. Variation in β/A4 deposition in the non-demented cases was large and overlapped with that of the AD cases. The ratio of mature to diffuse β/A4 deposits was greater in the non-demented than in the AD cases. In both the non-demented cases and AD, the β/A4 deposits were clustered with, in many tissues, a regular distribution of clusters along the cortex parallel to the pia. However, the mean cluster size of the deposits in the cortex was greater in AD than in the non-demented cases. These results suggest that the spread of β/A4 pathology between the modular units of the cortex and into the hippocampus could be important factors in the development of AD.

The density of diffuse, primitive, classic and compact βamyloid (Aβ deposits was estimated in regions of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in 15 cases of late-onset sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 12 cases of Down's syndrome (DS). A similar pattern of Aβ deposition was observed in the MTL in the AD and DS cases with a reduced density of deposits in the hippocampus compared with the adjacent cortical regions. Total Aβ deposit density was greater in DS than in AD in all brain regions examined. This could be attributable to overexpression of the amyloid precursor protein gene. The ratio of the primitive to the diffuse Aβ deposits was greater in DS than in AD which suggests that the formation of mature amyloid deposits is enhanced in DS. The diffuse deposits exhibited a parabolic and the primitive deposits an inverted parabolic response with age in the DS cases. This suggests either that the diffuse and primitive deposits are sequentially related or that there are alternate pathways of Aβ deposition. © 1995 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.

We report a compact two-dimensional accelerometer based upon a simple fiber cantilever constructed from a short length of multicore optical fiber. Two-axis measurement is demonstrated up to 3 kHz. Differential measurement between fiber Bragg gratings written in the multicore fiber provides temperature- insensitive measurements.

We examined the effect of grouping by the alignment of implicit axes on the perception of multiple shapes, using a patient (GK) who shows simultanagnosia as part of Blint's syndrome. Five experiments demonstrated that: (1) GK was better able to judge the orientation of a global configuration if the constituent local shapes were aligned with their major axes than if they were aligned with their edges; (2) this axis information was used implicitly, since GK was unable to discriminate between configurations of axis-aligned and edge-aligned shapes; (3) GK's sensitivity to axis-alignment persisted even when the orientations of local shapes were kept constant, indicating some form of cooperative effect between the local elements; (4) axis-alignment of shapes also facilitated his ability to discriminate single-item from multi-item configurations; (5) the effect of axis-alignment could be attributed, at least partially, to the degree to which there was matching between the orientations of local shapes and the global configuration. Taken together, the results suggest that axis-based grouping can support the selection of multiple objects.

We examined the effects on extinction of grouping by collinearity of edges and grouping by alignment of internal axes of shapes, in a patient (GK) with simultanagnosia following bilateral parietal brain damage. GK’s visual extinction was reduced when items (equilateral triangles and angles) could be grouped by base alignment (i.e., collinearity) or by axis alignment, relative to a condition in which items were ungrouped. These grouping effects disappeared when inter-item spacing was increased, though factors such as display symmetry remained constant. Overall, the results suggest that, under some conditions, grouping by alignment of axes of symmetry can have an equal beneficial effect on visual extinction as edge-based grouping; thus, in the extinguished field, there is derivation of axis-based representations from the contours present.

Traditional machinery for manufacturing processes are characterised by actuators powered and co-ordinated by mechanical linkages driven from a central drive. Increasingly, these linkages are replaced by independent electrical drives, each performs a different task and follows a different motion profile, co-ordinated by computers. A design methodology for the servo control of high speed multi-axis machinery is proposed, based on the concept of a highly adaptable generic machine model. In addition to the dynamics of the drives and the loads, the model includes the inherent interactions between the motion axes and thus provides a Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) description. In general, inherent interactions such as structural couplings between groups of motion axes are undesirable and needed to be compensated. On the other hand, imposed interactions such as the synchronisation of different groups of axes are often required. It is recognised that a suitable MIMO controller can simultaneously achieve these objectives and reconciles their potential conflicts. Both analytical and numerical methods for the design of MIMO controllers are investigated. At present, it is not possible to implement high order MIMO controllers for practical reasons. Based on simulations of the generic machine model under full MIMO control, however, it is possible to determine a suitable topology for a blockwise decentralised control scheme. The Block Relative Gain array (BRG) is used to compare the relative strength of closed loop interactions between sub-systems. A number of approaches to the design of the smaller decentralised MIMO controllers for these sub-systems has been investigated. For the purpose of illustration, a benchmark problem based on a 3 axes test rig has been carried through the design cycle to demonstrate the working of the design methodology.

Type 1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1R) have a well established role in modulating GABAergic signalling with the central nervous system, and are thought to be the only type present at GABAergic presynaptic terminals. In the medial entorhinal cortex (mEC), some cortical layers show high levels of ongoing GABAergic signalling (namely layer II) while others show relatively low levels (layer V). Using whole-cell patch clamp techniques, I have, for the first time, demonstrated the presence of functional CB1R in both deep and superficial layers of the mEC. Furthermore, using a range of highly specific ligands for both CB1R and CB2R, I present strong pharmacological evidence for CB2Rs being present in both deep and superficial layers of the mEC in the adult rat brain. In brain slices taken at earlier points in CNS development (P8-12), I have shown that while both CB1R and CB2R specific ligands do modulate GABAergic signalling at early developmental stages, antagonists/ inverse agonists and full agonists have similar effects, and serve only to reduce GABAergic signalling. These data suggest that the full cannabinoid signalling mechanisms at this early stage in synaptogenesis are not yet in place. During these whole-cell studies, I have developed and refined a novel recording technique, using an amantidine derivative (IEM1460) which allows inhibitory postsynaptic currents to be recorded under conditions in which glutamate receptors are not blocked and network activity remains high. Finally I have shown that bath applied CB1 and CB2 receptor antagonists/ inverse agonists are capable of modulating kainic acid induced persistent oscillatory activity in mEC. Inverse agonists suppressed oscillatory activity in the superficial layers of the mEC while it was enhanced in the deeper layers. It seems likely that cannabinoid receptors modulate the inhibitory neuronal activity that underlies network oscillations.

Cannabinoids modulate inhibitory GABAergic neurotransmission in many brain regions. Within the temporal lobe, cannabinoid receptors are highly expressed, and are located presynaptically at inhibitory terminals. Here, we have explored the role of type-1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs) at the level of inhibitory synaptic currents and field-recorded network oscillations. We report that arachidonylcyclopropylamide, an agonist at CB1R, inhibits GABAergic synaptic transmission onto both superficial and deep medial entorhinal (mEC) neurones, but this has little effect on network oscillations in beta/gamma frequency bands. By contrast, the CB1R antagonist/inverse agonist LY320135 (500?nM), increased GABAergic synaptic activity and beta/gamma oscillatory activity in superficial mEC, was suppressed, whilst that in deep mEC was enhanced. These data indicate that cannabinoid-mediated effects on inhibitory synaptic activity may be constitutively active in vitro, and that modulation of CB1R activation using inverse agonists unmasks complex effects of CBR function on network activity.

The density of diffuse, primitive, classic and compact beta-amyloid (beta/A4) deposits was studied in the medial temporal lobe in 12 cases of Down's syndrome (DS) from 38 to 67 years of age. Total beta/A4 deposit density was greater in the adjacent cortex compared with regions of the hippocampus, and these differences were similar within each age group of patients. The ratio of the primitive to diffuse deposits was greater in the hippocampus than in the adjacent cortex. Total beta/A4 density did not vary significantly with patient age. However, the density of the diffuse deposits exhibited a parabolic, and the primitive, classic and compact deposits an inverted parabolic, response with age. Hence, in DS, (1) beta/A4 density remains relatively constant with age, (2) differences in beta/A4 density between the hippocampus and adjacent cortex are established at an early age, and (3) mature beta/A4 subtype formation depends on brain region and patient age.

The density of beta-amyloid (A beta) deposits was studied in the medial temporal lobe in non-demented individuals and in sporadic Alzheimer's disease (SAD) and Down's syndrome (DS). No A beta deposits were recorded in six of the non-demented cases, while in a further eight cases, these were confined to either the lateral occipitotemporal or parahippocampal gyrus. The mean density of A beta deposits in the cortex was greater in SAD and DS than in non-demented cases but with overlap between patient groups. The mean density of A beta deposits was greater in DS than SAD consistent with a gene dosage effect. The ratio of primitive to diffuse A beta deposits was greater in DS and in non-demented cases than in SAD and the ratio of classic to diffuse deposits was lowest in DS. In all groups, A beta deposits occurred in clusters which were often regularly distributed. In the cortex, the dimension of the A beta clusters was greater in SAD than in the non-demented cases and DS. The data suggest that the development of A beta pathology in the hippocampus could be a factor in the development of DS and SAD. Furthermore, the high density of A beta deposits, and in particular the high proportion of primitive type deposits, may be important in DS while the development of large clusters of A beta deposits may be a factor in SAD.
