The role of reading in translation is rarely discussed in the literature. Translation has mainly been discussed within a product-oriented framework. The more process-oriented approaches of recent years have taken notice of reading as a component activity of the translation process. However, few empirical studies have been completed which address the role of reading in translation. The way a person reads, and the result of that reading (some sort of mental representation of the text or text segment), will depend on the reader's purposes and motivations. The present empirical study indicates that while the translator's reading of a text may be to some extent more thorough and deliberate than that of an ordinary reader, it is not likely to be markedly so. The study also indicates a significant variability in the way translators "read for translation". This suggests the existence of alternate strategies in this kind of reading.

This study has been conceived with the primary objective of identifying and evaluating the financial aspects of the transformation in country/company relations of the international oil industry from the traditional concessionary system to the system of governmental participation in the ownership and operation of oil concessions. The emphasis of the inquiry was placed on assembling a case study of the oil exploitation arrangements of Libya. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, the sociopolitical factors surrounding the international oil business were identified and examined in an attempt to see their influence on contractual arrangements and particularly to gauge the impact of any induced contractual changes on the revenue benefit accruing to the host country from its oil operations. Some comparative analyses were made in the study to examine the viability of the Libyan participation deals both as an investment proposal and as a system of conducting oil activities in the country. The analysis was carried out in the light of specific hypotheses to assess the relative impact of the participation scheme in comparison with the alternative concessionary model on the net revenue resulting to the government from oil operations and the relative effect on the level of research and development within the industry. A discounted cash flow analysis was conducted to measure inputs and outputs of the comparative models and judge their revenue benefits. Then an empirical analysis was carried out to detect any significant behavioural changes in the exploration and development effort associated with the different oil exploitation systems. Results of the investigation of revenues support the argument that the mere introduction of the participation system has not resulted in a significant revenue benefit to the host government. Though there has been a significant increase in government revenue, associated with the period following the emergence of the participation agreements, this increase was mainly due to socio-economic factors other than the participation scheme. At the same time the empirical results have shown an association of the participation scheme with a decline of the oil industry's research and development efforts.

Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD), is generally caused by excess gastric reflux back to the oesophagus where damage to the mucosa results in injury. GORD is a very common disease in western countries, more than a quarter of western people are suffering from this disease and there is a trend that the percentage population in eastern countries who are diagnosed as GORD is increasing. GORD and its complications damage the quality of life and can lead to serious oesophageal diseases including Barrett’s disease and oesophageal carcinoma. Sodium alginate dissolved in water forms a viscous liquid and can coat on oesophageal mucosa for a period of time. In this study the ability of the liquid alginate to adhere to the oesophageal mucosa was investigated and the factors that affect this retention were examined. The potential of this liquid alginate as a drug delivery vehicle to extend the duration of contact with the oesophageal mucosa was confirmed by this study. The capacity of an alginate coating to retard acid and pepsin diffusion, the two main aggressive factors in gastric reflux, was investigated. A significant reduction in acid and pepsin diffusion by alginate gel layer was demonstrated in this project, indicating that alginate has great potential to protect against damage caused by acidic reflux. A novel method was introduced using an independent score system to assess the protection of oesophageal tissue by a coating of liquid alginate using microscopy as a technique. This technique demonstrated that alginate can protect the oesophageal epithelial tissue from the damage caused by gastric acid and pepsin. Many techniques were used in this study. The experimental results suggested that liquid sodium alginate is a very promising candidate in treating local oesophageal diseases through forming a coating on the oesophageal mucosal surface, retarding the diffusion of components of gastric refluxate and thus reducing the contact of these noxious factors with the epithelium and minimising injury.

Journal ranking studies have generally adopted citation techniques or academic perceptions as the basis for assessing journal quality. They have traditionally been a source of information about potential research outlets, new journals, and an aid to developing a consensus about the relative merit of publications for promotion decisions. The aim of our research is to address specific shortcomings in the conventional literature and construct an alternative view of how we might more appropriately assess journal ‘quality’. We attempt to engage with the conventional literature by applying an approach that does not privilege either citation techniques or academic perceptions. We have adopted from Zeff (1996) an objective measure of academic journal library holdings, which Zeff describes as a ‘market test’. Our construct provides evidence of an important difference in journal holdings for the Australasian region that could significantly influence further research on journal quality. The method itself is entirely mundane but may be considered to reflect a complex of historic and more contemporary variables which impact on academic and administrative decisions, influencing the makeup of academic library holdings and providing a proxy for journal ‘quality’.

Neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease (NIFID) is a new neurodegenerative disease characterized histologically by the presence of neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions (NI) immunopositive for intermediate filament proteins, neuronal loss, swollen achromatic neurons (SN), and gliosis. We studied the spatial patterns of these pathological changes parallel to the pia mater in gyri of the temporal lobe in four cases of NIFID. Both the NI and SN occurred in clusters that were regularly distributed parallel to the pia mater, the cluster sizes of the SN being significantly greater than those of the NI. In a significant proportion of areas studied, there was a spatial correlation between the clusters of NI and those of the SN and with the density of the surviving neurons. In addition, the clusters of surviving neurons were negatively correlated (out of phase) with the clusters of glial cell nuclei. The pattern of clustering of these histological features suggests that there is degeneration of the cortico-cortical projections in NIFID leading to the formation of NI and SN within the same vertical columns of cells. The glial cell reaction may be a response to the loss of neurons rather than to the appearance of the NI or SN.

Significant changes in accounting disclosure are observed in periods of economic change such as those relating to emerging capital markets and programs of privatization. Measurement of the level of accounting disclosure should ideally be designed to capture the complexity of change in order to give insight and explanation to match the causes and consequences of change. This paper shows the added interpretive value in subdividing the disclosure checklist to reflect the requirements of national accounting regulations, the location of disclosure items in the annual report, and limitations on the availability of regulations in official translation to the local language. Defining targeted disclosure categories leads to significance testing of specific aspects of changes in accounting disclosure in the Egyptian capital market in the 1990s. Strong correlation of disclosure with the presence of majority government ownership of the company and the relative activity of share trading supports the applicability of political costs and capital need theories, respectively. The relation between International Accounting Standards (IASs) disclosure and the type of audit firm points to additional theoretical explanations, including relative familiarity with the legislation and compliance features identifiable with the emerging capital market. The approach described in this paper has the potential for enhancing understanding of the complexity of accounting change in other emerging capital markets and developing economies.

Background and Purpose Although it is established that the receptor activity modifying proteins (RAMPs) can interact with a number of GPCRs, little is known about the consequences of these interactions. Here the interaction of RAMPs with the glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1 receptor), the human vasoactive intestinal polypeptide/pituitary AC-Activating peptide 2 receptor (VPAC) and the type 1 corticotrophin releasing factor receptor (CRF) has been examined. Experimental Approach GPCRs were co-transfected with RAMPs in HEK 293S and CHO-K1 cells. Cell surface expression of RAMPs and GPCRs was examined by elisa. Where there was evidence for interactions, agonist-stimulated cAMP production, Ca mobilization and GTPγS binding to G, G, G and G were examined. The ability of CRF to stimulate adrenal corticotrophic hormone release in Ramp2 mice was assessed. Key Results The GLP-1 receptor failed to enhance the cell surface expression of any RAMP. VPAC enhanced the cell surface expression of all three RAMPs. CRF enhanced the cell surface expression of RAMP2; the cell surface expression of CRF was also increased. There was no effect on agonist-stimulated cAMP production. However, there was enhanced G-protein coupling in a receptor and agonist-dependent manner. The CRF: RAMP2 complex resulted in enhanced elevation of intracellular calcium to CRF and urocortin 1 but not sauvagine. In Ramp2 mice, there was a loss of responsiveness to CRF. Conclusions and Implications The VPAC and CRF receptors interact with RAMPs. This modulates G-protein coupling in an agonist-specific manner. For CRF, coupling to RAMP2 may be of physiological significance. © 2012 The Authors. British Journal of Pharmacology © 2012 The British Pharmacological Society.

Online enquiry communities such as Question Answering (Q&A) websites allow people to seek answers to all kind of questions. With the growing popularity of such platforms, it is important for community managers to constantly monitor the performance of their communities. Although different metrics have been proposed for tracking the evolution of such communities, maturity, the process in which communities become more topic proficient over time, has been largely ignored despite its potential to help in identifying robust communities. In this paper, we interpret community maturity as the proportion of complex questions in a community at a given time. We use the Server Fault (SF) community, a Question Answering (Q&A) community of system administrators, as our case study and perform analysis on question complexity, the level of expertise required to answer a question. We show that question complexity depends on both the length of involvement and the level of contributions of the users who post questions within their community. We extract features relating to askers, answerers, questions and answers, and analyse which features are strongly correlated with question complexity. Although our findings highlight the difficulty of automatically identifying question complexity, we found that complexity is more influenced by both the topical focus and the length of community involvement of askers. Following the identification of question complexity, we define a measure of maturity and analyse the evolution of different topical communities. Our results show that different topical communities show different maturity patterns. Some communities show a high maturity at the beginning while others exhibit slow maturity rate. Background and aims: Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists improve islet function and delay gastric emptying in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We evaluated 2-hour glucose, glucagon and insulin changes following a standardized mixed-meal tolerance test before and after 24 weeks of treatment with the once-daily prandial GLP-1 receptor agonist lixisenatide (approved for a therapeutic dose of 20 μg once daily) in six randomized, placebo-controlled studies within the lixisenatide Phase III GetGoal programme. In the studies, the mixed-meal test was conducted before and after: (1) lixisenatide treatment in patients insufficiently controlled despite diet and exercise (GetGoal-Mono), (2) lixisenatide treatment in combination with oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) (GetGoal-M and GetGoal-S), or (3) lixisenatide treatment in combination with basal insulin ± OAD (GetGoal-Duo 1, GetGoal-L and GetGoal-L-Asia).Materials and methods: A meta-analysis was performed (lixisenatide n=1124 vs placebo n=707) combining ANCOVA least squares (LS) mean values using an inverse variance weighted analysis. Results: Lixisenatide significantly reduced 2-hour postprandial glucose from baseline (LS mean difference vs placebo: -4.9 mmol/L, p<0.0001, Figure) and glucose excursions (LS mean difference vs placebo: -4.5 mmol/L, p<0.0001). As measured in two studies, lixisenatide also reduced postprandial glucagon (LS mean difference vs placebo: -19.0 ng/L, p<0.0001) and insulin (LS mean difference vs placebo: -64.8 pmol/L, p<0.0001), although the glucagon/insulin ratio was increased (LS mean difference vs placebo: 0.15, p=0.02) compared with placebo. Conclusion: The results show that lixisenatide potently reduces the glucose excursion after meal ingestion in subjects with type 2 diabetes, in association with marked reductions in glucagon and insulin levels. It is suggested that diminished glucagon secretion and slower gastric emptying contribute to reduced hepatic glucose production and delayed glucose absorption, enabling postprandial glycaemia to be controlled with less demand on beta-cell insulin secretion. A number of investigators have studied the application of oscillatory energy to a metal undergoing plastic deformation. Their results have shown that oscillatory stresses reduce both the stress required to initiate plastic deformation and the friction forces between the tool and workpiece. The first two sections in this thesis discuss historically and technically the devolopment of the use of oscillatory energy techniques to aid metal forming with particular reference to wire drawing. The remainder of the thesis discusses the research undertaken to study the effect of applying longitudinal oscillations to wire drawing. Oscillations were supplied from an electric hydraulic vibrator at frequencies in the range 25 to 500 c/s., and drawing tests were performed at drawing speeds up to 50 ft/m. on a 2000 lbf. bull-block. Equipment was designed to measure the drawing force, drawing torque, amplitude of die and drum oscillation and drawing speed. Reasons are given for selecting mild steel, pure and hard aluminium, stainless steel and hard copper as the materials to be drawn, and the experimental procedure and calibration of measuring equipment arc described. Results show that when oscillatory stresses are applied at frequencies within the range investigated : (a) There is no reduction in the maximum drawing load. (b) Using sodium stearate lubricant there is a negligible reduction in the coefficient of friction between the die and wire. (c) Pure aluminium does not absorb sufficient oscillatory energy to ease the movement of dislocations. (d) Hard aluminium is not softened by oscillatory energy accelerating the diffusion process. (e) Hard copper is not cyclically softened. A vibration analysis of the bull-block and wire showed that oscillatory drawiing in this frequency range, is a mechanical process of straining; and unstraining the drawn wire, and is dependent upon the stiffness of the material being drawn and the drawing machine. Directions which further work should take are suggested.

In this work, we investigate the influence of some growth parameters such as high microwave power ranging from 3.0 to 4.0 kW and N2 additive on the incorporation of bonded hydrogen defects in nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films grown through a small amount of pure N2 addition into conventional 4% CH4/H2 plasma using a 5 kW microwave plasma CVD system. Incorporation form and content of hydrogen point defects in the NCD films produced with pure N2 addition was analyzed by employing Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for the first time. A large amount of hydrogen related defects was detected in all the produced NCD films with N2 additive ranging from 29 to 87 µm thick with grain size from 47 nm to 31 nm. Furthermore, a specific new H related sharp absorption peak appears in all the NCD films grown with pure N2/CH4/H2 plasma at high powers and becomes stronger at powers higher than 3.0 kW and is even stronger than the 2920 cm−1 peak, which is commonly found in CVD diamond films. Based on these experimental findings, the role of high power and pure nitrogen addition on the growth of NCD films including hydrogen defect formation is analyzed and discussed.
