The behavior of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based nonlinear loop mirror with feedback has been investigated as a potential device for all-optical signal processing. In the feedback device, input signal pulses (ones) are injected into the loop, and amplified reflected pulses are fed back into the loop as switching pulses. The feedback device has two stable modes of operation - block mode, where alternating blocks of ones and zeros are observed, and spontaneous clock division mode, where halving of the input repetition rate is achieved. Improved models of the feedback device have been developed to study its performance in different operating conditions. The feedback device could be optimized to give a choice of either of the two stable modes by shifting the arrival time of the switching pulses at the SOA. Theoretically, it was found possible to operate the device at only tens of fJ switching pulse energies if the SOA is biased to produce very high gain in the presence of internal loss. The clock division regime arises from the combination of incomplete SOA gain recovery and memory of the startup sequence that is provided by the feedback. Clock division requires a sufficiently high differential phase shift per unit differential gain, which is related to the SOA linewidth enhancement factor.

This project has been undertaken for Hamworthy Hydraulics Limited. Its objective was to design and develop a controller package for a variable displacement, hydraulic pump for use mainly on mobile earth moving machinery. A survey was undertaken of control options used in practice and from this a design specification was formulated, the successful implementation of which would give Hamworthy an advantage over its competitors. Two different modes for the controller were envisaged. One consisted of using conventional hydro-mechanics and the other was based upon a microprocessor. To meet short term customer prototype requirements the first section of work was the realisation of the hydro-mechanical system. Mathematical models were made to evaluate controller stability and hence aid their design. The final package met the requirements of the specification and a single version could operate all sizes of variable displacement pumps in the Hamworthy range. The choice of controller options and combinations totalled twenty-four. The hydro-mechanical controller was complex and it was realised that a micro-processor system would allow all options to be implemented with just one design of hardware, thus greatly simplifying production. The final section of this project was to determine whether such a design was feasible. This entailed finding cheap, reliable transducers, using mathematical models to predict electro-hydraulic interface stability, testing such interfaces and finally incorporating a micro-processor in an interactive control loop. The study revealed that such a system was technically possible but it would cost 60% more than its hydro-mechanical counterpart. It was therefore concluded that, in the short term, for the markets considered, the hydro-mechanical design was the better solution. Regarding the micro-processor system the final conclusion was that, because the relative costs of the two systems are decreasing, the electro-hydraulic controller will gradually become more attractive and therefore Hamworthy should continue with its development.

We report a strong polarization dependent coupling behavior of fiber Bragg gratings with excessively tilted structures up to 81 . This unique property has been utilized to implement a novel twist sensor, showing high torsion sensitivity. The twist induced light coupling interchange between the two birefringence modes makes it possible to interrogate such a sensor using low-cost intensity demodulation technique.

A theoretical model is developed which characterizes the intracavity pulse evolutions in high-power fiber lasers. It is shown that experimentally observed dynamics of the key pulse parameters can be described by a reduced model of ordinary differential equations. Critical in driving the intracavity dynamics is the amplitude and phase modulations generated by the discrete elements in the laser. The theory gives a simple geometrical description of the intracavity dynamics and possible operation modes of the laser cavity. Furthermore, it provides a simple and efficient method for optimizing the performance of complex multiparametric laser systems.

Simulations examining pattern competition have been performed on a horizontal homogeneously heated layer that is bounded by an isothermal plane above an adiabatic plane. Several different circulation patterns arose as the heating regime applied to the horizontal layer was modified. The sequence of the patterns formed as the Grashof number was increased had the following order: laminar layer, rolls, squares, hexagons and pentagons, and then two square modes of differing orientations. Fourier analysis was used to determine how the key modes interact with each pattern.

Mode-locked lasers emitting a train of femtosecond pulses called dissipative solitons are an enabling technology for metrology, high-resolution spectroscopy, fibre optic communications, nano-optics and many other fields of science and applications. Recently, the vector nature of dissipative solitons has been exploited to demonstrate mode locked lasing with both locked and rapidly evolving states of polarisation. Here, for an erbium-doped fibre laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes, we demonstrate the first experimental and theoretical evidence of a new class of slowly evolving vector solitons characterized by a double-scroll chaotic polarisation attractor substantially different from Lorenz, Rössler and Ikeda strange attractors. The underlying physics comprises a long time scale coherent coupling of two polarisation modes. The observed phenomena, apart from the fundamental interest, provide a base for advances in secure communications, trapping and manipulation of atoms and nanoparticles, control of magnetisation in data storage devices and many other areas. © 2014 CIOMP. We report on a new vector model of an erbium-doped fibre laser mode locked with carbon nanotubes. This model goes beyond the limitations of the previously used models based on either coupled nonlinear Schrödinger or Ginzburg-Landau equations. Unlike the previous models, it accounts for the vector nature of the interaction between an optical field and an erbium-doped active medium, slow relaxation dynamics of erbium ions, linear birefringence in a fibre, linear and circular birefringence of a laser cavity caused by in-cavity polarization controller and light-induced anisotropy caused by elliptically polarized pump field. Interplay of aforementioned factors changes coherent coupling of two polarization modes at a long time scale and so results in a new family of vector solitons (VSs) with fast and slowly evolving states of polarization. The observed VSs can be of interest in secure communications, trapping and manipulation of atoms and nanoparticles, control of magnetization in data storage devices and many other areas.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) provide much promise in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and, thus, are a focal point of research and development. Existing on-board charging capacity is effective but requires the use of several power conversion devices and power converters, which reduce reliability and cost efficiency. This paper presents a novel three-phase switched reluctance (SR) motor drive with integrated charging functions (including internal combustion engine and grid charging). The electrical energy flow within the drivetrain is controlled by a power electronic converter with less power switching devices and magnetic devices. It allows the desired energy conversion between the engine generator, the battery, and the SR motor under different operation modes. Battery-charging techniques are developed to operate under both motor-driving mode and standstill-charging mode. During the magnetization mode, the machine's phase windings are energized by the dc-link voltage. The power converter and the machine phase windings are controlled with a three-phase relay to enable the use of the ac-dc rectifier. The power converter can work as a buck-boost-type or a buck-type dc-dc converter for charging the battery. Simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink and experiments on a 3-kW SR motor validate the effectiveness of the proposed technologies, which may have significant economic implications and improve the PHEVs' market acceptance.

We have proposed and demonstrated a nonlinear polarization-rotation-based fiber laser with two different operation states: passive mode-locking and multiwavelength emission. The intensity-dependent transmission or loss induced by nonlinear polarization rotation accounts for the distinct operation regimes. Our experiment results indicate that both passively mode-locked pulses and continuous-wave multiwavelength can be generated from the same fiber laser just through adjusting polarizations. Another characteristic of the current multiwavelength laser is that the used periodic filter is a birefringence fiber filter, which facilitates all-fiber integration of the fiber laser, so it is a potential multifunction laser source with all-fiber configuration and convenient manipulation. © 2008 IEEE.

The recent advancement in the growth technology of InGaN/GaN has decently positioned InGaN based white LEDs to leap into the area of general or daily lighting. Monolithic white LEDs with multiple QWs were previously demonstrated by Damilano et al. [1] in 2001. However, there are several challenges yet to be overcome for InGaN based monolithic white LEDs to establish themselves as an alternative to other day-to-day lighting sources [2,3]. Alongside the key characteristics of luminous efficacy and EQE, colour rendering index (CRI) and correlated colour temperature (CCT) are important characteristics for these structures [2,4]. Investigated monolithic white structures were similar to that described in [5] and contained blue and green InGaN multiple QWs without short-period superlattice between them and emitting at 440 nm and 530 nm, respectively. The electroluminescence (EL) measurements were done in the CW and pulse current modes. An integration sphere (Labsphere “CDS 600” spectrometer) and a pulse generator (Agilent 8114A) were used to perform the measurements. The CCT and Green/Blue radiant flux ratio were investigated at extended operation currents from 100mA to 2A using current pulses from 100ns to 100μs with a duty cycle varying from 1% to 95%. The strong dependence of the CCT on the duty cycle value, with the CCT value decreasing by more than three times at high duty cycle values (shown at the 300 mA pulse operation current) was demonstrated (Fig. 1). The pulse width variation seems to have a negligible effect on the CCT (Fig. 1). To account for the joule heating, a duty cycle more than 1% was considered as an overheated mode. For the 1% duty cycle it was demonstrated that the CCT was tuneable in three times by modulating input current and pulse width (Fig. 2). It has also been demonstrated that there is a possibility of keeping luminous flux independent of pulse width variation for a constant value of current pulse (Fig. 3).

We study InGaAs QD laser operating simultaneously at ground (GS) and excited (ES) states under 30ns pulsed-pumping and distinguish three regimes of operation depending on the pump current and the carrier relaxation pathways. An increased current leads to an increase in ES intensity and to a decrease in GS intensity (or saturation) for low pump range, as typical for the cascade-like pathway. Both the GS and ES intensities are steadily increased for high current ranges, which prove the dominance of the direct capture pathway. The relaxation oscillations are not pronounced for these ranges. For the mediate currents, the interplay between the both pathways leads to the damped large amplitude relaxation oscillations with significant deviation of the relaxation oscillation frequency from the initial value during the pulse.

National guidance and clinical guidelines recommended multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) for cancer services in order to bring specialists in relevant disciplines together, ensure clinical decisions are fully informed, and to coordinate care effectively. However, the effectiveness of cancer teams was not previously evaluated systematically. A random sample of 72 breast cancer teams in England was studied (548 members in six core disciplines), stratified by region and caseload. Information about team constitution, processes, effectiveness, clinical performance, and members' mental well-being was gathered using appropriate instruments. Two input variables, team workload (P=0.009) and the proportion of breast care nurses (P=0.003), positively predicted overall clinical performance in multivariate analysis using a two-stage regression model. There were significant correlations between individual team inputs, team composition variables, and clinical performance. Some disciplines consistently perceived their team's effectiveness differently from the mean. Teams with shared leadership of their clinical decision-making were most effective. The mental well-being of team members appeared significantly better than in previous studies of cancer clinicians, the NHS, and the general population. This study established that team composition, working methods, and workloads are related to measures of effectiveness, including the quality of clinical care. © 2003 Cancer Research UK.
