The latency variation of the P100M from minute to minute, between morning and afternoon and from day to day was investigated in an unshielded environment using two single channel magnetometers. Latency variation was greatest from minute to minute with relatively little longer term variation. The two magnetometers differed both in mean latency and in the degree of variation. This may be attributed to variation in the performance of the filters which were set a narrow bandwidth for recording in an unshielded environment.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vessel oxygenation saturation measurements have been the focus of much attention in recent years as a potential diagnostic parameter in a number of ocular and systemic pathologies. This interest has been heightened by the ability to measure oxygen saturation in vivo using a photographic technique. METHODS: Retinal vessel oxygenation in venules and arterioles of 279 retinal vessels of 12 healthy Caucasian participants (mean age: 30 SD (+/- 6) years) were measured consecutively three times to evaluate short-term variation in oxygen saturation and regional variability of retinal vessel oxygen saturation using dual-wavelength technology (Oxymetry Modul, Imedos, Germany). All subjects underwent standard optometric assessment including non-contact intra-ocular pressure assessment as well as having their systemic blood pressure measured. RESULTS: Vessels were grouped as either near-macula or peripheral, depending on their location. Peripheral arterioles and venules exhibited significantly lower oxygen saturation compared to their near-macula counterparts (arterioles: 94.7% (SD 3.9) vs. 99.7% (SD 3.2); venules: 65.1% (SD 7.2) vs. 90.3% (SD 6.7)). Both arterioles and venules, main branches, and those feeding and draining the retina near the macula and periphery showed low short-term variability of oxygen saturation (arterioles: COV 1.2-1.8%; venules: COV 2.9-4.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Retinal arterioles and venules exhibit low short-term variation of oxygen saturation in healthy subjects. Regional differences in oxygen saturation could be a potential useful marker for risk stratification and diagnostic purposes of area-specific retinal pathology such as age-related macula degeneration and diabetic maculopathy.

Two studies investigated undergraduates' knowledge of the UK government recommendations about binge drinking and sensible drinking, and also examined how labelling oneself as a binge drinker is associated with binge drinking perceptions. In Study 1, 325 undergraduates reported how many units constitute binge drinking, and labelled themselves as a 'binge drinker' or 'non-binge drinker'. Participants overestimated how many units constitute binge drinking relative to the UK government recommendations. Also, 59 labelled themselves as 'non-binge drinkers' and gave significantly higher estimates compared with 'binge drinkers'. In Study 2, 386 undergraduates defined binge drinking and reported how many units constitute sensible drinking. Only 13 of undergraduates defined binge drinking in terms of units of alcohol, and undergraduates overestimated how many units constitute sensible drinking. This research found wide variation in personal understanding of the term binge drinking and suggests a review of how to communicate recommendations about alcohol consumption to young people is needed. © 2010 Informa UK Ltd.

An international round robin study of the viscosity measurements and aging of fast pyrolysis bio-oil has been undertaken recently, and this work is an outgrowth from that effort. Two bio-oil samples were distributed to two laboratories for accelerated aging tests and to three laboratories of long-term aging studies. The accelerated aging test was defined as the change in viscosity of a sealed sample of bio-oil held for 24 h at 80 °C. The test was repeated 10 times over consecutive days to determine the intra-laboratory repeatability of the method. Other bio-oil samples were placed in storage at three temperatures, 21, 5, and -17 °C, for a period of up to 1 year to evaluate the change in viscosity. The variation in the results of the accelerated aging test was shown to be low within a given laboratory. The long-term aging studies showed that storage of a filtered bio-oil under refrigeration can minimize the amount of change in viscosity. The accelerated aging test gave a measure of change similar to that of 6-12 months of storage at room temperature for a filtered bio-oil. Filtration of solids was identified as a key contributor to improving the stability of the bio-oil as expressed by the viscosity based on results of the accelerated aging tests as well as long-term aging studies. Only the filtered bio-oil consistently gave useful results in the accelerated aging and long-term aging studies. The inconsistency suggests that better protocols need to be developed for sampling bio-oils. These results can be helpful in setting standards for use of bio-oil, which is just coming into the marketplace. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Purpose: To investigate whether regional long-term changes in peripapillary retinal flow, measured by scanning laser Doppler flowmetry (SLDF), occur in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: 31 healthy volunteers (mean age: 65 8.3 years) and 33 POAG patients (mean age: 71.2 7.6 years) were followed up every 4 months for 16 months. Using SLDF, three images of the superior and inferior optic nerve head were obtained for each subject. A 1010-pixel frame was used to measure blood flow, volume and velocity in the four quadrants of the peripapillary retina. Central 24-2 visual field testing was carried out at each visit. Repeated measures analysis of covariance was used to assess change over time between the normal and POAG groups for the SLDF parameters. Univariate linear regression analysis for mean deviation and glaucoma change probability (GCP) analysis were used to identify visual field progression. Results: Blood volume, flow and velocity measured in the inferior nasal quadrant of the peripapillary retina decreased significantly over time for the POAG group compared to the normal group (p=0.0073, 0.0097, 0.0095 respectively). Overall, 2 glaucoma patients showed a significantly deteriorating MD slope, while 7 patients showed visual field progression with GPA. All of the patients progressing with GPA, showed change in the superior hemifield and, of those, 14% showed change in the inferior hemifield. Conclusion: Glaucoma patients showed a decrease in blood flow, volume and velocity in the inferior nasal peripapillary retina. A regional variation in microvascular retinal capillary blood flow may provide insight into the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.
