This article draws upon the use of photography to research the lives of children living in Accra, Ghana. Its aim is to consider method in visual research, and to reflect upon those modes of explanation and understanding that any consideration of method must require. It suggests a role for photography as a 'vector', as something capable of connecting our knowledge and understanding of the everyday with the everyday experiences and reality of others. Drawing upon the photographs and spoken testimonies of children who live and work on the street, and of children who live in a large informal settlement, the article advances an intimate connection between photography and knowledge of the everyday reality of children's lives, most evident in the capacity of children's photographs to surprise and highlight the fallibility of our understandings. © 2010 International Visual Sociology Association.

The first syntheses of the natural products myo-inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate and (+/-)-myo-inositol 1,2-bisphosphate are described. The protected key intermediates 4,5,6-tri-O-benzoyl-myo-inositol and (+/-)-3,4,5,6-tetra-O-benzyl-myo-inositol were phosphorylated with dibenzyl N,N-di-isopropylphosphoramidite in the presence of 1H-tetrazole and subsequent oxidation of the phosphite. The crystal structures of the synthetic intermediates (+/-)-1-O-(tert-butyldiphenylsilyl)-2,3,O-cyclohexylidene-myo-inos itol and (+/-)-4,5,6-tri-O-benzoyl-1-O-(tert-butyldiphenylsilyl)-2,3-O-cycl ohexylidene- myo-inositol are reported. myo-Inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate (+/-)-myo-inositol 1,2-bisphosphate, and all isomeric myo-inositol tetrakisphosphates were evaluated for their ability to alter HO. production in the iron-catalysed Haber-Weiss reaction. The results demonstrated that a 1,2,3-grouping of phosphates in myo-inositol was necessary for inhibition also that (+/-)-myo-inositol 1,2-bisphosphate potentiated HO. production. myo-Inositol 1,2,3-trisphosphate resembled myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (phytic acid) in its ability to act as a siderophore by promoting iron-uptake into Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The research carried out in this thesis was mainly concerned with the effects of large induction motors and their transient performance in power systems. Computer packages using the three phase co-ordinate frame of reference were developed to simulate the induction motor transient performance. A technique using matrix algebra was developed to allow extension of the three phase co-ordinate method to analyse asymmetrical and symmetrical faults on both sides of the three phase delta-star transformer which is usually required when connecting large induction motors to the supply system. System simulation, applying these two techniques, was used to study the transient stability of a power system. The response of a typical system, loaded with a group of large induction motors, two three-phase delta-star transformers, a synchronous generator and an infinite system was analysed. The computer software developed to study this system has the advantage that different types of fault at different locations can be studied by simple changes in input data. The research also involved investigating the possibility of using different integrating routines such as Runge-Kutta-Gill, RungeKutta-Fehlberg and the Predictor-Corrector methods. The investigation enables the reduction of computation time, which is necessary when solving the induction motor equations expressed in terms of the three phase variables. The outcome of this investigation was utilised in analysing an introductory model (containing only minimal control action) of an isolated system having a significant induction motor load compared to the size of the generator energising the system.

Sensitive and precise radioimmunoassays for insulin and glucagon have been established. Although it was possible to employ similar precepts to the development of both hormone assays, the establishment of a reliable glucagon radioimmunoassay was complicated by the poor immunogenicity and instability of the peptide. Thus, unlike insulin antisera which were prepared by monthly injection of guinea pigs with crystalline insulin emulsified in adjuvant, the successful production of glucagon antisera was accomplished by immunisation of rabbits and guinea pigs with glucagon covalently linked to bovine plasma albumin. The conventional chloramine-T iodination with purification by gel chromatography was only suitable for the production of labelled insulin. Quality tracer for use in the glucagon radioimmunoassay was prepared by trace iodination, with subsequent purification of monoiodinated glucagon by anion exchange chromatography. Separation of free and antibody bound moieties by coated charcoal was applicable to both hormone assays, and a computerised data processing system, relying on logit-log transformation, was used to analyse all assay results. The assays were employed to evaluate the regulation of endocrine pancreatic function and the role of insulin and glucagon in the pathogenesis of the obese hyperglycaemic syndrome in mice. In the homozygous (ob/ob) condition, mice of the Birmingham strain were characterised by numerous abnormalities of glucose homeostasis, several of which were detected in heterozygous (ob/+) mice. Obese mice exhibited pancreatic alpha cell dysfunction and hyperglucagonaemia. Investigation of this defect revealed a marked insensitivity of an insulin dependent glucose sensing mechanism that inhibited glucagon secretion. Although circulating glucagon was of minor importance in the maintenance of hyperinsulinaemia, lack of suppression of alpha cell function by glucose and insulin contributed significantly to both the insulin insensitivity and the hyperglycaemia of obese mice.

The northern half of the parish of St. Catherine in Jamaica was selected as a test area to study, by means of remote sensing, the problems of soil erosion in a tropical environment. An initial study was carried out to determine whether eroded land within this environment could be successfully interpreted and mapped from the available 1: 25,000 scale aerial photographs. When satisfied that a sufficiently high percentage of the eroded land could be interpreted on the aerial photographs the main study was initiated. This involved interpreting the air photo cover of the study area for identifying and classifying land use and eroded land, and plotting the results on overlays on topographic base maps. These overlays were then composited with data on the soils and slopes of the study area. The areas of different soil type/slope/land use combinations were then measured, as was the area of eroded land for each of these combinations. This data was then analysed in two ways. The first way involved determining which of the combinations of soil type, slope and land use were most and least eroded and, on the basis of this, to draw up recommendations concerning future land use. The second analysis was aimed at determining which of the three factors, soil type, slope and land use, was most responsible for determining the rate of erosion. Although it was possible to show that slope was not very significant in determining the rate of erosion, it was much more difficult to separate the effects of land use and soil type. The results do, however, suggest that land use is more significant than soil type in determining the rate of erosion within the study area.

Background: Food allergy is associated with psychological distress in both child and parent. It is unknown whether parental distress is present prior to clinical diagnosis or whether experiences at clinic can reduce any distress present. This study aimed to assess anxiety and depression in parents and the impact of suspected food allergy on the lives of families before and after a visit to an allergy clinic. Methods: One hundred and twenty-four parents visiting an allergy clinic for the first time to have their child assessed for food allergy completed a study-specific questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale; 50 parents completed these 4-6 wk later in their own home. Results: Most parents (86.4%) reported suspected food allergy had an impact on their family life prior to clinic attendance; 76% had made changes to their child's diet. 32.5% of parents had mild-to-severe anxiety before their clinic visit; 17.5% had mild-to-moderate depression. Post-clinic, 40% had mild-to-severe anxiety; 13.1% had mild-to-moderate depression. There were no significant differences in anxiety (p = 0.34) or depression scores (p = 0.09) before and after the clinic visit. Conclusions: Anxiety and depression is present in a small proportion of parents prior to diagnosis of food allergy in their child and this does not reduce in the short term after the clinic visit. Identification of parents at risk of suffering from distress is needed and ways in which we communicate allergy information before and at clinic should be investigated to see if we can reduce distress. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S. A 10 cm diameter four-stage Scheibel column with dispersed phase wetted packing sections has been constructed to study the hydrodynamics and mass transfer using the system toluene-acetone-water. The literature pertaining to the above extractor has been examined and the important phenomena such as droplet break-up and coalescence, mass transfer and backmixing have been reviewed. A critical analysis of the backmixing or axial mixing models and the corresponding techniques for parameter estimation was applied and an optimization technique based on Marquardt's algorithm was implemented. A single phase sampling technique was developed to estimate the acetone concentration profile in both phases along the column. Column flooding characteristics were investigated under various operating conditions and it was found that, when the impellers were located at about DI/5cm from the upper surface of the pads, the limiting flow rates increased with impeller speed. This unusual behaviour was explained in terms of the pumping effect created by the turbine impellers. Correlations were developed to predict Sauter mean drop diameters. A five-cell with backflow model was used to estimate the column performance (stage efficiency) and phases non-ideality (backflow parameters). Overall mass transfer coefficients were computed using the above model and compared with those calculated using the correlations based on single drop mechanism.

In this paper, we investigated the effect of hydrogen termination on the electrical properties and impedance spectra of detonation nanodiamond. The impedance spectra revealed that the hydrogen-termination process increases the electrical conductivity by four orders of magnitude at room temperature. An equivalent circuit has been proposed to correlate with the conduction mechanism. Arrhenius plot showed that there were two different activation energy levels located at 0.089 eV and 0.63 eV between 50 °C and 400 °C. The possible physical mechanism corresponding to these activation energy levels has been discussed. Hydrogen-terminated detonation nanodiamond has been further annealed at different temperatures prior to FTIR and XPS measurements in order to understand their thermal stability. The results demonstrated that the surface oxidization occurred between 100 °C and 150 °C. However, the C-H bonds could partially survive when the temperature reaches 400 °C in air. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

The poor retention and efficacy of instilled drops as a means of delivering drugs to the ophthalmic environment is well-recognised. The potential value of contact lenses as a means of ophthalmic drug delivery, and consequent improvement of pre-corneal retention is one obvious route to the development of a more effective ocular delivery system. Furthermore, the increasing availability and clinical use of daily disposable contact lenses provides the platform for the development of viable single-day use drug delivery devices based on existing materials and lenses. In order to provide a basis for the effective design of such devices, a systematic understanding of the factors affecting the interaction of individual drugs with the lens matrix is required. Because a large number of potential structural variables are involved, it is necessary to achieve some rationalisation of the parameters and physicochemical properties (such as molecular weight, charge, partition coefficients) that influence drug interactions. Ophthalmic dyes and structurally related compounds based on the same core structure were used to investigate these various factors and the way in which they can be used in concert to design effective release systems for structurally different drugs. Initial studies of passive diffusional release form a necessary precursor to the investigation of the features of the ocular environment that over-ride this simple behaviour. Commercially available contact lenses of differing structural classifications were used to study factors affecting the uptake of the surrogate actives and their release under 'passive' conditions. The interaction between active and lens material shows considerable and complex structure dependence, which is not simply related to equilibrium water content. The structure of the polymer matrix itself was found to have the dominant controlling influence on active uptake; hydrophobic interaction with the ophthalmic dye playing a major role. © The Author(s) 2014 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav.
