De cara a 'Forever in Galicia':traducir a Castelao no contexto recente da literatura galega traducida a inglés

This article presents the most recent historical context (1995-2005) of the translation of Galician literary texts into a British framework. It also provides an analysis of the translation and editing conditions that have had an influence on each publication. At the same time, it offers a comparative reflection on the literary relationships that take place between Galicia, a nation without a state whose literary system has not yet attained full autonomy, and the United Kingdom, which has a strong literary system, on the premise that it foments cultural self-confidence and an awareness of national identity, especially as regards to the Galician literary and cultural system. The act of translating and publishing translations of Galician literature in the Anglophone world connotes a determined interplay of commercial, philsosophical and artistic interests, as well as practical difficulties within a specific cultural and global context. This paper therefore seeks to interrogate the sometimes unpredictable laws of the market for Galician and foreign literature in translation in English-speaking countries, by examining the reception of translations and the perception of their source culture. Finally, the challenge of translating and publishing Castelao's Sempre en Galiza within the practical and often problematic parameters established by this analysis will be considered.

The aim of this article is twofold: firstly, to stress the importance of the translation of Galician literature into other literary systems [such as British one, on the premise that it foments cultural self-confidence and an awareness of national identity, especially as regards to the Galician literary and cultural system. Secondly, to open new fields of research so that subsequent studies can delve into this topic in more depth.

Going it alone? North Korea’s adaptability as a small power in a changing world

This article uses small states scholarship to map North Korea’s evolution from a post-colonial small state to a system-influencing state due to its nuclear weapons programme. The framework allows for contributions to: (1) The DPRK literature which in some parts has suggested the future collapse of the state, (2) The small states literature that suggests they can only survive if they integrate larger political and/or economic units, (3) The mainstream IR literature and its dominant realist streak that considers great powers and their will as the main drivers in contemporary world politics.

Control of pattern formation by time-delay feedback with global and local contributions

We consider the suppression of spatiotemporal chaos in the complex GinzburgLandau equation by a combined global and local time-delay feedback. Feedback terms are implemented as a control scheme, i.e., they are proportional to the difference between the time-delayed state of the system and its current state. We perform a linear stability analysis of uniform oscillations with respect to space-dependent perturbations and compare with numerical simulations. Similarly, for the fixed-point solution that corresponds to amplitude death in the spatially extended system, a linear stability analysis with respect to space-dependent perturbations is performed and complemented by numerical simulations. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. Farewell, welfare state – hello, welfare regions? Chances and constraints of welfare management in the German federal system

The German welfare state is in crisis. Alarming long-term demographic trends, the still not fully digested consequences of German unification and the current economic downturn in much of the Eurozone have combined to create an urgent need for welfare reform. Yet the constitutional arrangements which govern the German political system, and well-entrenched political practice, mean that any such reform process is a daunting challenge. Thus, the welfare crisis is also a crisis of German-style co-operative federalism. Current empirical evidence makes for uncomfortable reading, and triggers debate on the nature of the German federation: have the two constitutional principles of federalism and establishing equal living conditions throughout the federation become mutually exclusive? However, as much of the welfare state is centred on the best utilisation of scarce financial resources, it is debatable to what extent alterations in the functional distribution of welfare responsibilities among the territorial levels of government can be regarded as a solution for the current problems. The article concludes that in the search for long-term sustainability of the welfare state the territorial dimension is likely to remain a secondary issue.
