In this paper we investigate rate adaptation algorithm SampleRate, which spends a fixed time on bit-rates other than the currently measured best bit-rate. A simple but effective analytic model is proposed to study the steady-state behavior of the algorithm. Impacts of link condition, channel congestion and multi-rate retry on the algorithm performance are modeled. Simulations validate the model. It is also observed there is still a large performance gap between SampleRate and optimal scheme in case of high frame collision probability.

Nowadays, road safety and traffic congestion are major concerns worldwide. This is why research on vehicular communication is very vital. In static scenarios vehicles behave typically like in an office network where nodes transmit without moving and with no defined position. This paper analyses the impact of context information on existing popular rate adaptation algorithms. Our simulation was done in MATLAB by observing the impact of context information on these algorithms. Simulation was performed for both static and mobile cases. Our simulations are based on IEEE 802.11p wireless standard. For static scenarios vehicles do not move and without defined positions, while for the mobile case, vehicles are mobile with uniformly selected speed and randomized positions. Network performance are analysed using context information. Our results show that in mobility when context information is used, the system performance can be improved for all three rate adaptation algorithms. That can be explained by that with range checking, when many vehicles are out of communication range, less vehicles contend for network resources, thereby increasing the network performances. © 2013 IEEE.

A key problem with IEEE 802.11 technology is adaptation of the transmission rates to the changing channel conditions, which is more challenging in vehicular networks. Although rate adaptation problem has been extensively studied for static residential and enterprise network scenarios, there is little work dedicated to the IEEE 802.11 rate adaptation in vehicular networks. Here, the authors are motivated to study the IEEE 802.11 rate adaptation problem in infrastructure-based vehicular networks. First of all, the performances of several existing rate adaptation algorithms under vehicle network scenarios, which have been widely used for static network scenarios, are evaluated. Then, a new rate adaptation algorithm is proposed to improve the network performance. In the new rate adaptation algorithm, the technique of sampling candidate transmission modes is used, and the effective throughput associated with a transmission mode is the metric used to choose among the possible transmission modes. The proposed algorithm is compared to several existing rate adaptation algorithms by simulations, which shows significant performance improvement under various system and channel configurations. An ideal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based rate adaptation algorithm in which accurate channel SNR is assumed to be always available is also implemented for benchmark performance comparison.

One of the major drawbacks for mobile nodes in wireless networks is power management. Our goal is to evaluate the performance power control scheme to be used to reduce network congestion, improve quality of service and collision avoidance in vehicular network and road safety application. Some of the importance of power control (PC) are improving spatial reuse, and increasing network capacity in mobile wireless communications. In this simulation we have evaluated the performance of existing rate algorithms compared with context Aware Rate selection algorithm (ACARS) and also seen the performance of ACARS and how it can be applied to road safety, improve network control and power management. Result shows that ACARS is able to minimize the total transmit power in the presence of propagation processes and mobility of vehicles, by adapting to the fast varying channels conditions with the Path loss exponent values that was used for that environment which is shown in the network simulation parameter. Our results have shown that ACARS is a very robust algorithm which performs very well with the effect of propagation processes that is prone to every transmitted signal in mobile networks. © 2013 IEEE.

Link quality-based rate adaptation has been widely used for IEEE 802.11 networks. However, network performance is affected by both link quality and random channel access. Selection of transmit modes for optimal link throughput can cause medium access control (MAC) throughput loss. In this paper, we investigate this issue and propose a generalised cross-layer rate adaptation algorithm. It considers jointly link quality and channel access to optimise network throughput. The objective is to examine the potential benefits by cross-layer design. An efficient analytic model is proposed to evaluate rate adaptation algorithms under dynamic channel and multi-user access environments. The proposed algorithm is compared to link throughput optimisation-based algorithm. It is found rate adaptation by optimising link layer throughput can result in large performance loss, which cannot be compensated by the means of optimising MAC access mechanism alone. Results show cross-layer design can achieve consistent and considerable performance gains of up to 20%. It deserves to be exploited in practical design for IEEE 802.11 networks.

Throughput plays a vital role for data transfer in Vehicular Networks which is useful for both safety and non-safety applications. An algorithm that adapts to mobile environment by using Context information has been proposed in this paper. Since one of the problems of existing rate adaptation algorithm is underutilization of link capacity in Vehicular environments, we have demonstrated that in wireless and mobile environments, vehicles can adapt to high mobility link condition and still perform better due to regular vehicles that will be out of communication range due to range checking and then de-congest the network thereby making the system perform better since fewer vehicles will contend for network resources. In this paper, we have design, implement and analyze ACARS, a more robust algorithm with significant increase in throughput performance and energy efficiency in the mist of high mobility of vehicles.

This research is focused on the optimisation of resource utilisation in wireless mobile networks with the consideration of the users’ experienced quality of video streaming services. The study specifically considers the new generation of mobile communication networks, i.e. 4G-LTE, as the main research context. The background study provides an overview of the main properties of the relevant technologies investigated. These include video streaming protocols and networks, video service quality assessment methods, the infrastructure and related functionalities of LTE, and resource allocation algorithms in mobile communication systems. A mathematical model based on an objective and no-reference quality assessment metric for video streaming, namely Pause Intensity, is developed in this work for the evaluation of the continuity of streaming services. The analytical model is verified by extensive simulation and subjective testing on the joint impairment effects of the pause duration and pause frequency. Various types of the video contents and different levels of the impairments have been used in the process of validation tests. It has been shown that Pause Intensity is closely correlated with the subjective quality measurement in terms of the Mean Opinion Score and this correlation property is content independent. Based on the Pause Intensity metric, an optimised resource allocation approach is proposed for the given user requirements, communication system specifications and network performances. This approach concerns both system efficiency and fairness when establishing appropriate resource allocation algorithms, together with the consideration of the correlation between the required and allocated data rates per user. Pause Intensity plays a key role here, representing the required level of Quality of Experience (QoE) to ensure the best balance between system efficiency and fairness. The 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) system is used as the main application environment where the proposed research framework is examined and the results are compared with existing scheduling methods on the achievable fairness, efficiency and correlation. Adaptive video streaming technologies are also investigated and combined with our initiatives on determining the distribution of QoE performance across the network. The resulting scheduling process is controlled through the prioritization of users by considering their perceived quality for the services received. Meanwhile, a trade-off between fairness and efficiency is maintained through an online adjustment of the scheduler’s parameters. Furthermore, Pause Intensity is applied to act as a regulator to realise the rate adaptation function during the end user’s playback of the adaptive streaming service. The adaptive rates under various channel conditions and the shape of the QoE distribution amongst the users for different scheduling policies have been demonstrated in the context of LTE. Finally, the work for interworking between mobile communication system at the macro-cell level and the different deployments of WiFi technologies throughout the macro-cell is presented. A QoEdriven approach is proposed to analyse the offloading mechanism of the user’s data (e.g. video traffic) while the new rate distribution algorithm reshapes the network capacity across the macrocell. The scheduling policy derived is used to regulate the performance of the resource allocation across the fair-efficient spectrum. The associated offloading mechanism can properly control the number of the users within the coverages of the macro-cell base station and each of the WiFi access points involved. The performance of the non-seamless and user-controlled mobile traffic offloading (through the mobile WiFi devices) has been evaluated and compared with that of the standard operator-controlled WiFi hotspots.

Mobile WiFi devices are becoming increasingly popular in non-seamless and user-controlled mobile traffic offloading alongside the standard WiFi hotspots. Unlike the operator-controlled hotspots, a mobile WiFi device relies on the capacity of the macro-cell for the data rate allocated to it. This type of devices can help offloading data traffic from the macro-cell base station and serve the end users within a closer range, but will change the pattern of resource distributions operated by the base station. We propose a resource allocation scheme that aims to optimize user quality of experience (QoE) when accessing video services in the environment where traffic offloading is taking place through interworking between a mobile communication system and low range wireless LANs. In this scheme, a rate redistribution algorithm is derived to perform scheduling which is controlled by a no-reference quality assessment metric in order to achieve the desired trade-offs between efficiency and fairness. We show the performance of this algorithm in terms of the distribution of the allocated data rates throughout the macro-cell investigated and the service coverage offered by the WiFi access point.

Mobile communication and networking infrastructures play an important role in the development of smart cities, to support real-time information exchange and management required in modern urbanization. Mobile WiFi devices that help offloading data traffic from the macro-cell base station and serve the end users within a closer range can significantly improve the connectivity of wireless communications between essential components including infrastructural and human devices in a city. However, this offloading function through interworking between LTE and WiFi systems will change the pattern of resource distributions operated by the base station. In this paper, a resource allocation scheme is proposed to ensure stable service coverage and end-user quality of experience (QoE) when offloading takes place in a macro-cell environment. In this scheme, a rate redistribution algorithm is derived to form a parametric scheduler to meet the required levels of efficiency and fairness, guided by a no-reference quality assessment metric. We show that the performance of resource allocation can be regulated by this scheduler without affecting the service coverage offered by the WLAN access point. The performances of different interworking scenarios and macro-cell scheduling policies are also compared.

Since wireless network optimisations can be typically designed and evaluated independently of one another under the assumption that they can be applied jointly or independently. In this paper, we have analysis some rate algorithms in wireless networks. Since wireless networks have different standards in IEEE with peculiar features, data rate is one of those important parameters that wireless networks depend on for performances. The optimisation of this network is dependent on the behaviour of a particular rate algorithm in a network scenario. We have considered some first and second generation's rate algorithm, and it is all about selecting an appropriate data rate that any available wireless network can utilise for transmission in order to achieve a good performance. We have designed and analysis a wireless network and results obtained for some rate algorithms, like ONOE and AARF.

Link adaptation (LA) plays an important role in adapting an IEEE 802.11 network to wireless link conditions and maximizing its capacity. However, there is a lack of theoretic analysis of IEEE 802.11 LA algorithms. In this article, we propose a Markov chain model for an 802.11 LA algorithm (ONOE algorithm), aiming to identify the problems and finding the space of improvement for LA algorithms. We systematically model the impacts of frame corruption and collision on IEEE 802.11 network performance. The proposed analytic model was verified by computer simulations. With the analytic model, it can be observed that ONOE algorithm performance is highly dependent on the initial bit rate and parameter configurations. The algorithm may perform badly even under light channel congestion, and thus, ONOE algorithm parameters should be configured carefully to ensure a satisfactory system performance. Distributed network utility maximization (NUM) is receiving increasing interests for cross-layer optimization problems in multihop wireless networks. Traditional distributed NUM algorithms rely heavily on feedback information between different network elements, such as traffic sources and routers. Because of the distinct features of multihop wireless networks such as time-varying channels and dynamic network topology, the feedback information is usually inaccurate, which represents as a major obstacle for distributed NUM application to wireless networks. The questions to be answered include if distributed NUM algorithm can converge with inaccurate feedback and how to design effective distributed NUM algorithm for wireless networks. In this paper, we first use the infinitesimal perturbation analysis technique to provide an unbiased gradient estimation on the aggregate rate of traffic sources at the routers based on locally available information. On the basis of that, we propose a stochastic approximation algorithm to solve the distributed NUM problem with inaccurate feedback. We then prove that the proposed algorithm can converge to the optimum solution of distributed NUM with perfect feedback under certain conditions. The proposed algorithm is applied to the joint rate and media access control problem for wireless networks. Numerical results demonstrate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme to minimize transmit power for multicast orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems. The proposed scheme allows users to have different symbol error rate (SER) across subcarriers and guarantees an average bit error rate and transmission rate for all users. We first provide an algorithm to determine the optimal bits and target SER on subcarriers. Because the worst-case complexity of the optimal algorithm is exponential, we further propose a suboptimal algorithm that separately assigns bit and adjusts SER with a lower complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the performance of multicast orthogonal frequency division multiple access systems and that the performance of the suboptimal algorithm is close to that of the optimal one. Emerging vehicular comfort applications pose a host of completely new set of requirements such as maintaining end-to-end connectivity, packet routing, and reliable communication for internet access while on the move. One of the biggest challenges is to provide good quality of service (QoS) such as low packet delay while coping with the fast topological changes. In this paper, we propose a clustering algorithm based on minimal path loss ratio (MPLR) which should help in spectrum efficiency and reduce data congestion in the network. The vehicular nodes which experience minimal path loss are selected as the cluster heads. The performance of the MPLR clustering algorithm is calculated by rate of change of cluster heads, average number of clusters and average cluster size. Vehicular traffic models derived from the Traffic Wales data are fed as input to the motorway simulator. A mathematical analysis for the rate of change of cluster head is derived which validates the MPLR algorithm and is compared with the simulated results. The mathematical and simulated results are in good agreement indicating the stability of the algorithm and the accuracy of the simulator. The MPLR system is also compared with V2R system with MPLR system performing better. © 2013 IEEE.
