The O–O–N–N–O-type pentadentate ligands H3ed3a, H3pd3a and H3pd3p (H3ed3a stands ethylenediamine-N,N,N′-triacetic acid; H3pd3a stands 1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N′-triacetic acid and H3pd3p stands 1,3-propanediamine-N,N,N′-tri-3-propionic acid) and the corresponding novel octahedral or square-planar/trigonal-bipyramidal copper(II) complexes have been prepared and characterized. H3ed3a, H3pd3a and H3pd3p ligands coordinate to copper(II) ion via five donor atoms (three deprotonated carboxylate atoms and two amine nitrogens) affording octahedral in case of ed3a3− and intermediate square-pyramidal/trigonal-bipyramidal structure in case of pd3a3− and pd3p3−. A six coordinate, octahedral geometry has been established crystallographically for the [Mg(H2O)6][Cu(ed3a)(H2O)]2 · 2H2O complex and five coordinate square-pyramidal for the [Mg(H2O)5Cu(pd3a)][Cu(pd3a)] · 2H2O. Structural data correlating similar chelate Cu(II) complexes have been used for the better understanding the pathway: octahedral → square-pyramidal ↔ trigonal- bipyramid geometry. An extensive configuration analysis is discussed in relation to information obtained for similar complexes. The infra-red and electronic absorption spectra of the complexes are discussed in comparison with related complexes of known geometries. Molecular mechanics and density functional theory (DFT) programs have been used to model the most stable geometric isomer yielding, at the same time, significant structural data. The results from density functional studies have been compared with X-ray data.

A series of manganese(II) [Mn(L)] and manganese(III) [Mn(L)(X)] (X = ClO4, OAc, NCS, N3, Cl, Br and I) complexes have been synthesized from Schiff base ligands N,N′-o- phenylenebis(salicylideneimine)(LH2) and N,N′-o-phenylenebis(5- bromosalicylideneimine)(L′H2) obtained by condensation of salicylaldehyde or 5-Br salicylaldehyde with o-phenylene-diamine. The complexes have been characterized by the combination of IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and electrochemical studies. Three manganese(III) complexes 3 [Mn(L)(ClO4)(H2O)], 5 [Mn(L)(OAc)] and 13 [Mn(L)(NCS)] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The X-ray structures show that the manganese(III) is hexa-coordinated in 3, it is penta-coordinated in 13, while in 5 there is an infinite chain where the MnL moieties are connected by acetate ions acting as bridging bidentate ligand. The cyclic voltammograms of all the manganese(III) complexes exhibit two reversible/quasi-reversible/ irreversible responses assignable to Mn(III)/Mn(II) and Mn(IV)/Mn(III) couples. It was observed that the ligand L′H2 containing the 5-bromosal moiety always stabilizes the lower oxidation states compared to the corresponding unsubstituted LH2. Cyclic voltammograms of the manganese(II) complexes (1 and 2) exhibit a quasi-reversible Mn(III)/Mn(II) couple at E1/2 -0.08 V for 1 and 0.054 V for 2. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Five manganese complexes in an N 4O 2 donor environment have been prepared. Four of the compounds involve aroyl hydrazone as ligands and manganese is in a +2 oxidation state. The fifth compound was prepared using N,Nprime-o-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine) and imidazole as ligands where manganese is present in +3 oxidation state. X-ray crystal structure of one Mn +2 compound and the Mn +3 compound was determined. The relative stabilities of the Mn +2 and Mn +3 oxidation states were analyzed using the structural data and MO calculations. Manganese(II) complexes of four aroyl hydrazone ligands were prepared and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. The complexes are of the type Mn(L) 2, where L stands for the deprotonated hydrazone ligand. One of the compounds, Mn(pybzhz) 2, was also characterized by single crystal structure determination. In all these complexes, the Mn(II) is in an N 4O 2 donor environment and the Mn(II) center cannot be oxidized either chemically or electrochemically. However, when another ligand Ophsal is used to give the compound [Mn(Ophsal)(imzH) 2]ClO 4, which was also characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination, manganese can easily avail the +3 oxidation state. The relative stabilities of the +2 and +3 oxidation states of manganese were analyzed and it was concluded that the extent of distortion from the perfect octahedral geometry is the main controlling factor in these cases. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. In 1934, Arthur Lindo Patterson showed that a map of interatomic vectors is obtainable from measured X-ray diffraction data without phase information. Such maps were interpretable for simple crystal structures, but proliferation and overlapping of peaks caused confusion as the number of atoms increased. Since the peak height of a vector between two particular atoms is related to the product of their atomic numbers, a complicated structure could effectively be reduced to a simple one by including just a few heavy atoms (of high atomic number) since their interatomic vectors would stand out from the general clutter. Once located, these atoms provide approximate phases for Fourier syntheses that reveal the locations of additional atoms. Surveys of small-molecule structures in the Cambridge Structural Database during the periods 1936-1969, when Patterson methods were commonly used, and 1980-2013, dominated by direct methods, demonstrate large differences in the abundance of certain elements. The moderately heavy elements K, Rb, As and Br are the heaviest elements in the structure more than 3 times as often in the early period than in the recent period. Examples are given of three triumphs of the heavy atom method and two initial failures that had to be overcome. © 2014 © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

A survey of crystal structures containing hydantoin, dihydrouracil and uracil derivatives in the Cambridge Structural Database revealed four main types of hydrogen bond motifs when derivatives with extra substituents able to interfere with the main motif are excluded. All these molecules contain two hydrogen bond donors and two hydrogen bond acceptors in the sequence of NH, C = O, NH, and C=O groups within a 5-membered ring (hydantoin) and two 6-membered rings (dihydrouracil and uracil). In all cases, both ring NH groups act as donors in the main hydrogen bond motif but there is an excess of hydrogen bond acceptors (two C=O able to accept twice each) and so two possibilities are found: (i) each carbonyl O atom may accept one hydrogen bond or (ii) one carbonyl O atom may accept two hydrogen bonds while the other does not participate in the hydrogen bonding. We observed different preferences in the type and symmetry of the motifs adopted by the different derivatives, and a good agreement is found between motifs observed experimentally and those predicted using computational methods. We identified certain molecular factors such as chirality, substituent size and the possibility of C-H⋯O interactions as important factors influencing the motif observation. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

The X-ray crystal structures of two related trans-N2S2 copper macrocycles are reported. One was isolated with the copper in the divalent form and the other with copper in its univalent form affording a valuable insight into the changes of geometry and metrical parameters that occur during redox processes in macrocyclic copper complexes. A variable temperature NMR study of the copper(I) complex is reported, indicative of a chair-boat conformational change within the alkyl chain backbone of the macrocycle. It was possible to extract the relevant kinetic and thermodynamic parameters (?G‡, 57.8 kJ mol-1; ?H‡, 52.1 kJ mol-1; ?S‡, -19.2 J K-1 mol-1) for this process at 298 K. DFT molecular orbital calculations were used to confirm these observations and to calculate the energy difference (26.2 kJmol-1) between the copper(I) macrocycle in a planar and a distorted tetrahedral disposition.

[μ-Tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4‘)iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), [Fe(btzb)3](PF6)2, crystallizes in a three-dimensional 3-fold interlocked structure featuring a sharp two-step spin-crossover behavior. The spin conversion takes place between 164 and 182 K showing a discontinuity at about T1/2 = 174 K and a hysteresis of about 4 K between T1/2 and the low-spin state. The spin transition has been independently followed by magnetic susceptibility measurements, 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy, and variable temperature far and midrange FTIR spectroscopy. The title compound crystallizes in the trigonal space group P30¯(No. 147) with a unit cell content of one formula unit plus a small amount of disordered solvent. The lattice parameters were determined by X-ray diffraction at several temperatures between 100 and 300 K. Complete crystal structures were resolved for 9 of these temperatures between 100 (only low spin, LS) and 300 K (only high spin, HS), Z = 1 [Fe(btzb)3](PF 6)2: 300 K (HS), a = 11.258(6) Å, c = 8.948(6) Å, V = 982.2(10) Å3; 100 K (LS), a = 10.989(3) Å, c = 8.702(2) Å, V = 910.1(4) Å3. The molecular structure consists of octahedral coordinated iron(II) centers bridged by six N4,N4‘ coordinating bis(tetrazole) ligands to form three 3-dimensional networks. Each of these three networks is symmetry related and interpenetrates each other within a unit cell to form the interlocked structure. The Fe−N bond lengths change between 1.993(1) Å at 100 K in the LS state and 2.193(2) Å at 300 K in the HS state. The nearest Fe separation is along the c-axis and identical with the lattice parameter c.

Objective: The aims of this study were to establish the structure of the potent anticonvulsant enaminone methyl 4-(4′-bromophenyl)amino-6-methyl-2- oxocyclohex-3-en-1-oate (E139), and to determine the energetically preferred conformation of the molecule, which is responsible for the biological activity. Materials and Methods: The structure of the molecule was determined by X-ray crystallography. Theoretical ab initio calculations with different basis sets were used to compare the energies of the different enantiomers and to other structurally related compounds. Results: The X-ray crystal structure revealed two independent molecules of E139, both with absolute configuration C11(S), C12(R), and their inverse. Ab initio calculations with the 6-31G, 3-21G and STO-3G basis sets confirmed that the C11(S), C12(R) enantiomer with both substituents equatorial had the lowest energy. Compared to relevant crystal structures, the geometry of the theoretical structures shows a longer C-N and shorter C=O distance with more cyclohexene ring puckering in the isolated molecule. Conclusion: Based on a pharmacophoric model it is suggested that the enaminone system HN-C=C-C=O and the 4-bromophenyl group in E139 are necessary to confer anticonvulsant property that could lead to the design of new and improved anticonvulsant agents. The reactions of directly related tellurium and selenium heterocyclic compounds with triiron dodecacarbonyl are described. The reaction of 2-telluraphthalide, C8H8OTe with [Fe3(CO)12 gave [Fe{C6H4(CH2)Te}(CO)3]2, (1). An iron atom has inserted into the telluracyclic ring, and it is probable that one co-ordinated CO ligand arises from the initially organic carbonyl group. X-ray analysis of compound (1) showed that the compound has a Fe2Te2 core, which is achieved by dimerisation. The reaction of telluraphthalic anhydride, C8H402Te with [Fe3(CO)12] gave a known, but unexpected, organic phthalide product, C8H602, which was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Selenaphthalic anhydride, C8H4O2Se gave intractable products on reaction with [Fe3(CO)12], 2-selenaphthalide, C8H6OSe, on reaction with [Fe3(CO)12] gave a major product [Fe2{C6H4(CH2)Se}(CO)6], (2) and a minor product [Fe3{C6H4(CH2)Se}(CO)8], (3) which is an intermediate in the formation of (2). X-ray analysis of (2) shows that compound (2) is very similar to (1) except that the 18 electron rule is satisfied by co-ordination of a Fe(CO)3 moiety, rather than dimerisation. Compound (3), also studied by X-ray crystallography, differs from (2) mainly in the addition of an Fe(CO)2 moiety. Telluraphtbalic anhydride, C8H402Te, and selenaphthalic anhydride, C8H402Se, are both monoclinic and crystallise in space group P21/n. 2-Selenaphthalide, C8H402Se, is also monoclinic, space group P21/C. The reactions of the following compounds (l,3-dihydrobenzo[c]selenophene, 1,3,7,9-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2c; 4,5c'] ditellurophene, dibenzoselenophene, phenoxselenine, 3, 5-naphtho-1-telluracyclohexane and 3,5-naphtho-1-selenacyclohexane) with [Fe3lCO)12] are reported. It is unfortunate that the above compounds do not react under the conditions employed; this may be due to differing degrees of ring strain. 1,8-bis(bromomethyl)naphthalene, C12H10Br2 is monoclinic and crystallises in space group C2/c. 1,1-diiodo-3,5-naphthotelluracyclohexane, C12H10TeI2 and 3,5-naphtho-l-telluracyclohexane, C12H10Te are monoclinic and crystallise in space group P21/c. 3,5-naphtho-l-selenacyclohexane, C12H10Se and 2,2,8,8-tetraiodo-1,3,7,9-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2c;4,5c']ditellurophene are also monoclinic, space group P21/a. The syntheses of intramolecular stabilised organo-tellurium and selenium compounds are reported, having a general formula of REX (where R = phenylazophenyl; E = Se, Te; X = electronegative group, for example C1, Br or I). The crystal structures of R'TeBr, RTeI, RSeCI, RSeCI/I and RSeI (where R = phenylazophenyl) are reported. The tellurium containing X-ray structures are triclinic and have a space group P-1. The selenium containing X-ray structures are monoclinic with space group P21/n. The inclusion of nitrogen in selenium heterocycles provides access to an entirely new area of organometallic chemistry. The reaction of 2-methylbenzoselenazole with [Fe3(CO)12] gave [Fe2{C6H4(NCH2CH3)Se}(CO)6]. The reactions of 2-(methyltelluro)benzanilide or 2-(methylseleno)benzanilide with [Fe3(CO)12] gave reaction products [Fe2(μTeMe)2(CO)6] and [Fe2 (μ-SeMe)2(CO)6] respectively, which were confmned by X-ray crystallography. The use of Mossbauer spectroscopy on the products obtained from the reactions of heterocyclic compounds with [Fe3(CO)12] can give useful information, for example the number of iron sites and the environments of these iron sites within the products.

The primary theme of this research was the characterisation of new and novel organo-tellurium complexes, using the technique of single crystal X-ray analysis to establish more firmly the various coordination modes of tellurium. In each study the unit cell dimensions and intensity data were collected using an Enraf-Nonius CAD-4, four circle diffractometer. The raw data collected in turn was transferred to the Birmingham University Honeywell Multics System and processed using the appropriate computer packages for the determination of crystal structures. The molecular and crystal structures of: bis[2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]tritelluride, bis[2-(N-hydroxy)iminophenyl] ditelluride, 2-(2-pyridyl)phenyltellurium(IV) tribromide, (2-N,N-dimethylbenzylamine-C,N')tellurium(IV)tribromide, 2-dichloro(butyl)tellurobenzaldehyde, 2-dichlorobutotelluro-N-dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, dimethyldithiocarbamato[2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]tellurium(II), dimethyldithiocarbamato[2-(2-quinolinyl)phenyl]tellurium(II) and para-ethoxypheny[2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl]telluride are described. In each structure, the Lewis acidity of tellurium appears to be satisfied by autocomplex formation, through short-range intramolecular secondary bonds between tellurium and an electron denoting species, (generally nitrogen in these structures) with long range weak inter molecular contacts forming in the majority of the tellurium(IV) structures. The order of Lewis acidity in each structure can be considered to be reflected by the length of the short range intramolecular secondary bond, identified, that is, when tellurium has a low Lewis acidity this interaction is long. Interestingly, no primary bonds are found trans to a Te-C covalent bond in any of the above structures, highlighting the strong trans effect of aromatic and aryl groups in tellurium complexes.

Perturbations in the bismuth market resulted in Mining and Chemical Products Ltd., seeking further outlets in the market. Together with Manchem Ltd. they were anxious to evaluate the possibility of using bismuth compounds as a replacement for lead/calcium soaps in paint driers. A range of new organobismuth compounds were synthesised of the type RBiX2 and R3BiX2 (X= halogen, OOCR, dithiocarbamate). A variety of synthetic techniques were explored, including the use of mathematical reactions, phase-transfer catalysis and microwave energy. The preparation of a range of trivalent and pentavalent organobismuth carboxylates is reported and their infra-red , 13C, lH nmr spectra. The compounds were evaluated as paint driers and in cases found to enhance paint drying to a greater degree than the standard driers, to which they were being compared. The drying times of paint films containing the organobismuth compounds are reported, together with a comparison of the drying times with the addition of bismuth tris-diethyldithiocarbamate, which may promote the cross-linking reaction that occur in paint films during the drying process. Examples are reported to illustrate the great reductions in reaction times possible when using microwave energy. Reactions such as metallation of aromatic rings, ligand redistribution and synthesis were carried out in PTFE containers in a conventional domestic microwave oven. An X-ray diffraction study of (phenylazophenyl-C,N')mercury(II) chloride has shown it to be dimeric via long Hg-Cl bridging interactions of 3.367A. Its crystal structure is reported, together with its 13C nmr spectra and mass spectrum. The Lewis acidity of compounds of the type RBiX2 was investigated. The donor group being anchored to the organo group (R). The dithiocarbamates bis- (diethyldithiobarbamato)phenylbismuth(Ill) and [2-2-pyridyl)phenylbismuth(III) were synthesised, and their crystal structures, 14N, 13C nmr ar1d infra-red spectra are reported. Both compounds are pseudo-pentagonal bipyramidal in geometry, with two long Bi-S bonds and two short Bi-S bonds. The reaction of RBiBr2 (R= 2-(pyridyl) with various ligands is reported. The infra-red evidence suggesting that the coordination of extra ligands is accompanied by a reduction of the strength of the Bi-interaction.

Advancing (θA) and receding (θR) contact angles were measured with several probe liquids on the external facets (201), (001), (011), and (110) of macroscopic form I paracetamol crystals as well as the cleaved (internal) facet (010). For the external crystal facets, dispersive surface energies γd calculated from the contact angles were found to be similar (34 ± 1 mJ/m2), while the polar components varied significantly. Cleaving the crystals exposed a more apolar (010) surface with very different surface properties, including γd = 45 ± 1 mJ/m2. The relative surface polarity (γp/γ) of the facets in decreasing order was (001) > (011) > (201) > (110) > (010), which agreed with the fraction of exposed polar hydroxyl groups as determined from C and O 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra, and could be correlated with the number of non-hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl groups per unit area present for each crystal facet, based on the known crystal structures. In conclusion, all facets of form I paracetamol crystals examined exhibited anisotropic wetting behavior and surface energetics that correlated to the presence of surface hydroxyl groups. © 2006 American Chemical Society.

The Norwegian physicist Lars Vegard studied with William H. Bragg in Leeds and then with Wilhelm Wien in Würzburg. There, in 1912, he heard a lecture by Max Laue describing the first X-ray diffraction experiments and took accurate notes which he promptly sent to Bragg. Although now remembered mainly for his work on the physics of the aurora borealis, Vegard also did important pioneering work in three areas of crystallography. He derived chemical insight from a series of related crystal structures that he determined, Vegard's Law relates the unit-cell dimensions of mixed crystals to those of the pure components, and he determined some of the first crystal structures of gases solidified at cryogenic temperatures. © 2013 Taylor and Francis.

The glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor is a class B G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that is a key target for treatments for type II diabetes and obesity. This receptor, like other class B GPCRs, displays biased agonism, though the physiologic significance of this is yet to be elucidated. Previous work has implicated R2.60190 , N3.43240 , Q7.49394 , and H6.52363 as key residues involved in peptide-mediated biased agonism, with R2.60190 , N3.43240 , and Q7.49394 predicted to form a polar interaction network. In this study, we used novel insight gained from recent crystal structures of the transmembrane domains of the glucagon and corticotropin releasing factor 1 (CRF1) receptors to develop improved models of the GLP-1 receptor that predict additional key molecular interactions with these amino acids. We have introduced E6.53364 A, N3.43240 Q, Q7.49493N, and N3.43240 Q/Q7.49 Q/Q7.49493N mutations to probe the role of predicted H-bonding and charge-charge interactions in driving cAMP, calcium, or extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling. A polar interaction between E6.53364 and R2.60190 was predicted to be important for GLP-1- and exendin-4-, but not oxyntomodulin-mediated cAMP formation and also ERK1/2 phosphorylation. In contrast, Q7.49394 , but not R2.60190 /E6.53364 was critical for calcium mobilization for all three peptides. Mutation of N3.43240 and Q7.49394 had differential effects on individual peptides, providing evidence for molecular differences in activation transition. Collectively, this work expands our understanding of peptide-mediated signaling from the GLP-1 receptor and the key role that the central polar network plays in these events.

Objectives Understanding the impact of the counterion on the properties of an acidic or basic drug may influence the choice of salt form, especially for less potent drugs with a high drug load per unit dose. The aim of this work was to determine the influence of the hydrogen bonding potential of the counterion on the crystal structure of salts of the poorly soluble, poorly compressible, acidic drug gemfibrozil and to correlate these with mechanical properties. Methods Compacts of the parent drug and the salts were used to determine Young's modulus of elasticity using beam bending tests. Crystal structures were determined previously from X-ray powder diffraction data. Key findings The free acid, tert-butylamine, 2-amino-2-methylpropan-1-ol and 2-amino-2-methylpropan-1, 3-diol salts had a common crystal packing motif of infinite hydrogen-bonded chains with cross-linking between pairs of adjacent chains. The tromethamine (trsi) salt, with different mechanical properties, had a two-dimensional sheet-like network of hydrogen bonds, with slip planes, forming a stiffer compact. Conclusions The type of counter ion is important in determining mechanical properties and could be selected to afford slip and plastic deformation. © 2010 Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
