Halide octahedral molybdenum clusters [(Mo6X8)L6]n- possess luminescence properties that are highly promising for biological applications. These properties are rather dependent on the nature of both the inner ligands X (i.e. Cl, Br, or I) and the apical organic or inorganic ligands L. Herein, the luminescence properties and the toxicity of thiol-modified polystyrene microbeads (PS-SH) doped with [(Mo6X8)(NO3)6]2- (X=Cl, Br, I) were studied and evaluated using human epidermoid larynx carcinoma (Hep2) cell cultures. According to our data, the photoluminescence quantum yield of (Mo6I8)@PS-SH is significantly higher (0.04) than that of (Mo6Cl8)@PS-SH (6Br8)@PS-SH (6X8)@PS-SH showed that all three types of doped microbeads had no significant effect on the viability and proliferation of the cells.

The structure and spin-crossover magnetic behavior of [FeII16][BF4]2 (1 = isoxazole) and [FeII16][ClO4]2 have been studied. [FeII16][BF4]2 undergoes two reversible spin-crossover transitions at 91 and 192 K, and is the first two-step spin transition to undergo a simultaneous crystallographic phase transition, but does not exhibit thermal hysteresis. The single-crystal structure determinations at 260 [space group P3̄, a = 17.4387(4) Å, c = 7.6847(2) Å] and at 130 K [space group P1̄, a = 17.0901(2) Å, b = 16.7481(2) Å, c = 7.5413(1) Å, α = 90.5309(6)°, β = 91.5231(6)°, γ = 117.8195(8)°] reveal two different iron sites, Fe1 and Fe2, in a 1:2 ratio. The room-temperature magnetic moment of 5.0 μB is consistent with high-spin Fe(II). A plateau in μ(T) having a moment of 3.3 μB centered at 130 K suggests a mixed spin system of some high-spin and some low-spin Fe(II) molecules. On the basis of the Fe−N bond distances at the two temperatures, and the molar fraction of high-spin molecules at the transition plateau, Fe1 and Fe2 can be assigned to the 91 and 192 K transitions, respectively. [FeII16][ClO4]2 [space group P3̄, a = 17.5829(3) Å, c = 7.8043(2) Å, β = 109.820 (3)°, T = 295 K] also possesses Fe1:Fe2 in a 1:2 ratio, and magnetic measurements show a single spin transition at 213 K, indicating that both Fe1 and Fe2 undergo a simultaneous spin transition. [FeII16][ClO4]2 slowly decomposes in solutions containing acetic anhydride to form [FeIII3O(OAc)613][ClO4] [space group I2, a = 10.1547(7) Å, b = 16.5497(11) Å, c = 10.3205(9) Å, β = 109.820 (3)°, T = 200 K]. The isosceles Fe3 unit contains two Fe···Fe distances of 3.2844(1) Å and a third Fe···Fe distance of 3.2857(1) Å. The magnetic data can be fit to a trinuclear model with ℋ = −2J(SS2 + SS3) − 2J13(SS3), where J = −27.1 and J13 = −32.5 cm-1.

Examines the operation of the provisions of the Law of Property Act 1925 s.54(2) containing an exception to the rule that a deed is required in order to create a valid legal lease and conferring full legal status to short-term letting agreements created by parol, focusing on the requirements that the lease must take effect in possession and must be at the best rent reasonably obtainable without fine. Calls for the former of these two requirements to be amended and the latter abolished on the ground that they give rise to unnecessary complexity in the law and, in the case of the latter, uncertainty.

1. The receptors which mediate the effects of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), amylin and adrenomedullin on the guinea-pig vas deferens have been investigated. 2. All three peptides cause concentration dependant inhibitions of the electrically stimulated twitch response (pD 2s for CGRP, amylin and adrenomedullin of 7.90 ± 0.11, 7.70 ± 0.19 and 7.25 ± 0.10 respectively). 3. CGRP 8-37 (1 μM) and AC187 (10 μM) showed little antagonist activity against adrenomedullin. 4. Adrenomedullin 22-52 by itself inhibited the electrically stimulated contractions of the vas deferens and also antagonized the responses to CGRP, amylin and adrenomedullin. 5. [ 125I]-adrenomedullin labelled a single population of binding sites in vas deferens membranes with a pIC 50 of 8.91 and a capacity of 643 fmol mg -1. Its selectivity profile was adrenomedullin > AC187 > CGRP = amylin. It was clearly distinct from a site labelled by [ 125I]-CGRP (pIC 50 = 8.73, capacity = 114 fmol mg -1, selectivity CGRP > amylin = AC187 > adrenomedullin). [ 125I]-amylin bound to two sites with a total capacity of 882 fmol mg -1. 6. Although CGRP has been shown to act at a CGRP 2 receptor on the vas deferens with low sensitivity to CGRP 8-37, this antagonist displaced [ 125I]-CGRP with high affinity from vas deferens membranes. This affinity was unaltered by increasing the temperature from 4°C to 25°C, suggesting the anomalous behaviour of CGRP 8-37 is not due to temperature differences between binding and functional assays.

Type 2 diabetes is an insidious disorder, with micro and/or macrovascular and nervous damage occurring in many patients before diagnosis. This damage is caused by hyperglycaemia and the diverse effects of insulin resistance. Obesity, in particular central obesity, is a strong pre-disposing factor for type 2 diabetes. Skeletal muscle is the main site of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal and appears to be the first organ that becomes insulin resistant in the diabetic state, with later involvement of adipose tissue and the liver. This study has investigated the use of novel agents to ameliorate insulin-resistance in skeletal muscle as a means of identifying intervention sites against insulin resistance and of improving glucose uptake and metabolism by skeletal muscle. Glucose uptake was measured in vitro by cultured L6 myocytes and isolated muscles from normal and obese diabetic ob/ob mice, using either the tritiated non-metabolised glucose analogue 2-deoxy-D-glucose or by glucose disposal. Agents studied included lipoic acid, isoferulic acid, bradykinin, lipid mobilising factor (provisionally synonymous with Zinca2 glycoprotein) and the trace elements lithium, selenium and chromium. The putative role of TNFa in insulin resistance was also investigated. Lipoic acid improved insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in normal and insulin resistance murine muscles, as well as cultured myocytes. Isoferulic acid, bradykinin and LMF also produced a transient increase in glucose uptake in cultured myocytes. Physiological concentrations of TNFa were found to cause insulin resistance in cultured, but no in excised murine muscles. The effect of the M2 metabolite of the satiety-inducing agent sibutramine on lipolysis in excised murine and human adipocytes was also investigated. M2 increased lipolysis from normal lean and obese ob/ob mouse adipocytes. Arguably the most important observation was that M2 also increased the lipolytic rate in adipocytes from catecholamine resistant obese subjects. The studies reported in this thesis indicate that a diversity of agents can improve glucose uptake and ameliorate insulin resistance. It is likely that these agents are acting via different pathways. This thesis has also shown that M2 can induce lipolysis in both rodent and human adipocytes. M2 hence has potential to directly reduce adiposity, in addition to well documented effects via the central nervous system.

Commonhold is a new modified form of freehold tenure and represents the meritworthy objective of better spreading around the freehold ownership of land and the bringing to an end the notion of leasehold tenure in relation to phsyically interdependent buildings. This article considers the nature of English Commonhold as a new modified species of freehold tenure for physically interdependent buildings and seeks to investigate the reason(s) as to its non-use in England and Wales. The paper surveys current literature so as to highlight various contemporary academic and professional criticisms of the current Commonhold Scheme as laid out in the Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Act 2002 and it also includes the results of an emprical survey commissioned by the author which details the perception of Commonhold from the perspective of conveyancing solciitors and their clients. Certain conclusions are drawn which attempt to explain the lack of enthusiasm for Commonhold amongst the property industry and a number of reccommendations are made as to how the use of Commonhold in England and Wales can be increased.

Peer mentoring of undergraduates is increasingly being used in higher education to reduce first year attrition by aiding transition to university. The authors propose that peer mentoring may also be a means of transmitting the values and ethics which reflect academic and personal integrity and underpin graduate and professional identity. In a qualitative study, they examined students' expectations and subsequent experience of a psychology undergraduate pilot mentoring scheme, together with the process and content. Mentors and mentees felt that mentors had a unique part to play in aiding transition to university. Mentors' advice reflected implicit academic values rather than strategic short cuts and mentoring cued reflection on their own development. The implications for encouraging student participation in mentoring schemes are discussed.

Examines the Court of Appeal judgment in Tesla Motors Ltd v BBC on whether the claim that a review of a vehicle on the BBC "Top Gear" programme constituted malicious falsehood should be struck out under CPR 3.4(2) on the ground there was insufficient evidence to show that any loss in revenue suffered by the manufacturer was attributable to the review. Considers the implications of the decision for commercial claimants seeking to establish that defamation caused them "serious harm", which, pursuant to the Defamation Act 2013 s.1(2), requires evidence of actual or likely serious financial loss.
