We report the performance of coherently-detected nine-channel WDM transmission over high dispersion fibers, using polarization multiplexed m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (m = 4, 16, 64, 256) at 112 Gbit/s. Compensation of fiber nonlinearities via digital back-propagation enables up to 10 dB improvement in maximum transmittable power and similar to 8 dB Q(eff) improvement which translates to a nine-fold enhancement in transmission reach for PM-256QAM, where the largest improvements are associated with higher-order modulation formats. We further demonstrate that even under strong nonlinear distortion the transmission reach only reduces by a factor of similar to 2.5 for a 2 unit increase in capacity (log(2)m) when full band DBP is employed, in proportion to the required back-to-back OSNR.

Mechanisms of fatigue crack growth have been studied for a range of PM steels at relative densities of 0.90 and 1.0, for which strength, fracture toughness, and microstructural information was also available. It is shown that the Paris exponents for steady state crack growth are between 8 and 18 when ρr is approximately 0.9 but when ρr is approximately 1.0 the exponents are between 2.6 and 4.0, i.e in the range typical of wrought steels (2-4). At both densities, threshold stress intensities are between 5.5 and 10.8 MPa m1/2 when R = 0.1. Combinations of these thresholds and yield strengths are comparable with those for wrought steels. When R = 0.8, reductions in threshold to between 2.7 and 5 MPa m1/2 are attributed to crack closure effects. At ρr = 0.90, Fe-0.5C fails by progressive rupture of sinter necks. Astaloy A, with 0.2%C and 0.6%C, and Distaloy AB-0.6C have smaller plastic zone sizes and the cracks follow more difficult paths through particles as well as necks. When ρr is approximately 1.0, fracture is partially by true fatigue modes and partly by cleavage, the bursts of cleavage being more noticeable when Kmax is high.

The ageing response of 2124 Al-SiC particulate metal-matrix composite (MMC) and unreinforced alloy has been examined using hardness measurements and Arrhenius analysis. The formation of phases during precipitation has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The MMC exhibits accelerated ageing compared to unreinforced alloy, due to enhanced S′ formation. The activation energy for diffusion is lower in the MMC than in the unreinforced alloy. DSC scans show Guinier-Preston B (GPB) zone nucleation to occur at a lower temperature in the MMC, whilst the total volume of GPB zones formed is smaller than in the unreinforced alloy. A model has been proposed to explain the GPB zone formation behaviour, in which ease of GPB zone nucleation varies within the MMC, as a function of ageing time and of position within the matrix. S′ formation is enhanced in the MMC because of improved diffusion and a large increase in density of heterogeneous nucleation sites compared to the unreinforced alloy. © 1994 Chapman & Hall.
