We propose to exploit a self-focusing effect in the atmosphere to assist delivering powerful laser beams from orbit to the ground. We demonstrate through numerical modeling that when the self-focusing length is comparable with the atmosphere height the spot size on the ground can be reduced well below the diffraction limits without beam quality degradation. The density variation suppresses beam filamentation and provides the self-focusing of the beam as a whole. The use of light self-focusing in the atmosphere can greatly relax the requirements for the orbital optics and ground receivers.
Low loss depressed cladding waveguide inscribed in YAG:Nd single crystal by femtosecond laser pulses
Resumo:
A depressed cladding waveguide with record low loss of 0.12 dB/cm is inscribed in YAG:Nd(0.3at.%) crystal by femtosecond laser pulses with an elliptical beam waist. The waveguide is formed by a set of parallel tracks which constitute the depressed cladding. It is a key element for compact and efficient CW waveguide laser operating at 1064 nm and pumped by a multimode laser diode. Special attention is paid to mechanical stress resulting from the inscription process. Numerical calculation of mode distribution and propagation loss with the elasto-optical effect taken into account leads to the conclusion that the depressed cladding is a dominating factor in waveguide mode formation, while the mechanical stress only slightly distorts waveguide modes.

The focusing of multimode laser diode beams is probably the most significant problem that hinders the expansion of the high-power semiconductor lasers in many spatially-demanding applications. Generally, the 'quality' of laser beams is characterized by so-called 'beam propagation parameter' M2, which is defined as the ratio of the divergence of the laser beam to that of a diffraction-limited counterpart. Therefore, M2 determines the ratio of the beam focal-spot size to that of the 'ideal' Gaussian beam focused by the same optical system. Typically, M2 takes the value of 20-50 for high-power broad-stripe laser diodes thus making the focal-spot 1-2 orders of magnitude larger than the diffraction limit. The idea of 'superfocusing' for high-M2 beams relies on a technique developed for the generation of Bessel beams from laser diodes using a cone-shaped lens (axicon). With traditional focusing of multimode radiation, different curvatures of the wavefronts of the various constituent modes lead to a shift of their focal points along the optical axis that in turn implies larger focal-spot sizes with correspondingly increased values of M2. In contrast, the generation of a Bessel-type beam with an axicon relies on 'self-interference' of each mode thus eliminating the underlying reason for an increase in the focal-spot size. For an experimental demonstration of the proposed technique, we used a fiber-coupled laser diode with M2 below 20 and an emission wavelength in ~1μm range. Utilization of the axicons with apex angle of 140deg, made by direct laser writing on a fiber tip, enabled the demonstration of an order of magnitude decrease of the focal-spot size compared to that achievable using an 'ideal' lens of unity numerical aperture. © 2014 SPIE.

Point-by-point fibre grating fabrication by femtosecond laser pulses requires tight focusing of the pulses into the core of the fibre. This condition is not easily satisfied in photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) due to the pulse scattering by the holes. In this letter, we present a numerical model of propagation of tightly focused laser beam through PCF in a typical experimental setup. We investigate impact of the numerical aperture of the beam and hole refractive index on the beam scattering and identify optimal conditions for relating the findings to the requirements of grating fabrication. The results explain and quantify recent experimental grating inscription techniques and are indicative of birefringence observed in long-period gratings written by femtosecond laser pulses. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A novel, direction-sensitive bending sensor based on an asymmetric fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed by an infrared femtosecond laser was demonstrated. The technique is based on tight transverse confinement of the femto-inscribed structures and can be directly applied in conventional, untreated singlemode fibers. The FBG structure was inscribed by an amplified, titanium sapphire laser system. The grating cross-section was elongated along the direction of the laser beam with the transverse dimensions of approximately 1 by 2 μm. It was suggested that the sensitivity of the device can be improved by inscribing smaller spatial features and by implementing more complex grating designs aimed at maximizing the effect of strain.

We have observed a positive change or refractive index and formation of waveguides in YAG:Cr4+ crystals, exposed to a high-intensity femtosecond laser beam. The technique is potentially suitable for fabrication of waveguide lasers in crystal materials.

An astigmatic scheme of a laser wavelength meter based on a single air-gap Fizeau interferometer is described. For a multimode laser, the accuracy in determining the center of gravity of a spectrum is within 1GHz. Two complementary testing techniques are proposed for the instrument. By using them, it was shown for the first time that, for this type of meters, a systematic error arises and increases with a decrease in the radiation-spectrum width. The effect is periodic in the lasing frequency and results from a weak beam that is brought about by a reflection from the front surface of the interferometer. Moreover, in the previously designed optical schemes, this effect is so strong that unambiguous determination of the wavelength of a single-frequency radiation is impossible. The use of an astigmatic scheme helps additionally attenuate the influence of the third beam, thus eliminating the ambiguity in the results and reducing the absolute error to a value of ±1.5 GHz.

The gradient force, as a function of position and velocity, is derived for a two-level atom interacting with a standing-wave laser field. Basing on optical Bloch equations, the numerical solutions for the gradient force f_(|_;n) (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...) pointing in the direction of the transverse of the laser beam are given. It is shown the higher order gradient force plays important role at strong intensity (G = 64), the contribution of them can not be neglected.

Control of spatiotemporal chaos is achieved in the catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt(110) by localized modification of the kinetic properties of the surface chemical reaction. In the experiment, a small temperature heterogeneity is created on the surface by a focused laser beam. This heterogeneity constitutes a pacemaker and starts to emit target waves. These waves slowly entrain the medium and suppress the spatiotemporal chaos that is present in the absence of control. We compare this experimental result with a numerical study of the Krischer-Eiswirth-Ertl model for CO oxidation on Pt(110). We confirm the experimental findings and identify regimes where complete and partial controls are possible.

In the present paper we numerically study instrumental impact on statistical properties of quasi-CW Raman fiber laser using a simple model of multimode laser radiation. Effects, that have the most influence, are limited electrical bandwidth of measurement equipment and noise. To check this influence, we developed a simple model of the multimode quasi- CW generation with exponential statistics (i.e. uncorrelated modes). We found that the area near zero intensity in probability density function (PDF) is strongly affected by both factors, for example both lead to formation of a negative wing of intensity distribution. But far wing slope of PDF is not affected by noise and, for moderate mismatch between optical and electrical bandwidth, is only slightly affected by bandwidth limitation. The generation spectrum often becomes broader at higher power in experiments, so the spectral/electrical bandwidth mismatch factor increases over the power that can lead to artificial dependence of the PDF slope over the power. It was also found that both effects influence the ACF background level: noise impact decreases it, while limited bandwidth leads to its increase. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). An important part - a hydrodynamically suspended impeller exposed to corrosive conditions, required to sealed hermetically into micro packages. Laser beam welded (LBW) Ti6Al4V alloy has been adopted in anti-corrosion micro packages for the impeller of a (LVAD). Thin and narrow welds were required for such medical equipment. Pulsed Nd:YAG welding was successfully adopted as sealing method for the impeller. ©2011 IEEE.
