Iterative multiuser joint decoding based on exact Belief Propagation (BP) is analyzed in the large system limit by means of the replica method. It is shown that performance can be improved by appropriate power assignment to the users. The optimum power assignment can be found by linear programming in most technically relevant cases. The performance of BP iterative multiuser joint decoding is compared to suboptimum approximations based on Interference Cancellation (IC). While IC receivers show a significant loss for equal-power users, they yield performance close to BP under optimum power assignment.

The microwave photonic response of a superstructured fiber Bragg grating is investigated. A bandpass response is achieved with the optical taps controlled by the combination of superstructured fiber grating characteristics and fiber dispersion. A rejection level of >45 dB is demonstrated.

This thesis presents details on the fabrication of microwave transversal filters using fibre Bragg grating arrays and the building of fibre Bragg grating based magnetic-field sensors. Some theoretical background about fibre Bragg gratings, photosensitivity, fibre Bragg grating sensors and filters are presented. Fibre Bragg grating sensors in other industrial applications are highlighted. Some sensing principles are also introduced. Experimental work is carried out to demonstrate a magnetic-field sensor using an established fibre Bragg grating strain sensor. System performance and trade-off are discussed. The most important part of this thesis is on the fabrication of photonic transversal filter using fibre Bragg grating arrays. In order to improve the filter performance, a novel tap multiplexing structure is presented. Further improving approaches such as apodisation are also investigated. The basis of nonrecirculating filter, some structure and performance are introduced.

The microwave photonic responses of superstructured fiber Bragg gratings in combination with dispersive fiber are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The superstructured gratings are optimized, taking account of the spectral response of the broad-band source, Erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and optical tunable filter to achieve a filter response with sidelobe suppression of more than 60 dB. © 2004 IEEE.

It is well known that optic flow - the smooth transformation of the retinal image experienced by a moving observer - contains valuable information about the three-dimensional layout of the environment. From psychophysical and neurophysiological experiments, specialised mechanisms responsive to components of optic flow (sometimes called complex motion) such as expansion and rotation have been inferred. However, it remains unclear (a) whether the visual system has mechanisms for processing the component of deformation and (b) whether there are multiple mechanisms that function independently from each other. Here, we investigate these issues using random-dot patterns and a forced-choice subthreshold summation technique. In experiment 1, we manipulated the size of a test region that was permitted to contain signal and found substantial spatial summation for signal components of translation, expansion, rotation, and deformation embedded in noise. In experiment 2, little or no summation was found for the superposition of orthogonal pairs of complex motion patterns (eg expansion and rotation), consistent with probability summation between pairs of independent detectors. Our results suggest that optic-flow components are detected by mechanisms that are specialised for particular patterns of complex motion.

A novel architecture for microwave/millimeter-wave signal generation and data modulation using a fiber-grating-based distributed feedback laser has been proposed in this letter. For demonstration, a 155.52-Mb/s data stream on a 16.9-GHz subcarrier has been transmitted and recovered successfully. It has been proved that this technology would be of benefit to future microwave data transmission systems.

A novel high-frequency fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing interrogation system by using fiber Sagnac-loop-based microwave photonic filtering is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By adopting the microwave photonic filtering, the wavelength shift of sensing FBG can be converted into amplitude variation of the modulated electronic radio-frequency (RF) signal. In the experiment, the strain applied onto the sensing FBG has been demodulated by measuring the intensity of the recovered RF signal, and by modulating the RF signal with different frequencies, different interrogation sensitivities can be achieved.

The frequency dependent RF power degradation in direct modulated microwave photonic systems employing uniform period fibre Bragg gratingsFBG.as reflective elements is investigated. The results have implications in terms of the available RF bandwidth and the stability requirements for the fibre Bragg gratings.

In this paper a microwave photonic filter using superstructured fiber Bragg grating and dispersive fiber is investigated. A theoretical model to describe the transfer function of the filter taking into consideration the spectral width of light source is established. Experiments are carried out to verify the theoretical analysis. Both theoretical and experimental results indicate that due to chromatic dispersion the source spectral width introduces an additional power penalty to the microwave photonic response of the filter.

In this work, we investigate the impact of minute amounts of pure nitrogen addition into conventional methane/hydrogen mixtures on the growth characteristics of nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films by microwave plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition (MPCVD), under high power conditions. The NCD films were produced from a gas mixture of 4% CH4/H2 with two different concentrations of N2 additive and microwave power ranging from 3.0 kW to 4.0 kW, while keeping all the other operating parameters constant. The morphology, grain size, microstructure and texture of the resulting NCD films were characterized by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. N2 addition was found to be the main parameter responsible for the formation and for the key change in the growth characteristics of NCD films under the employed conditions. Growth rates ranging from 5.4 μm/h up to 9.6 μm/h were achieved for the NCD films, much higher than those usually reported in the literature. The enhancing factor of nitrogen addition on NCD growth rate was obtained by comparing with the growth rate of large-grained microcrystalline diamond films grown without nitrogen and discussed by comparing with that of single crystal diamond through theoretical work in the literature. This achievement on NCD growth rate makes the technology interesting for industrial applications where fast coating of large substrates is highly desirable.
