Iterative multiuser joint decoding based on exact Belief Propagation (BP) is analyzed in the large system limit by means of the replica method. It is shown that performance can be improved by appropriate power assignment to the users. The optimum power assignment can be found by linear programming in most technically relevant cases. The performance of BP iterative multiuser joint decoding is compared to suboptimum approximations based on Interference Cancellation (IC). While IC receivers show a significant loss for equal-power users, they yield performance close to BP under optimum power assignment.

We studied the visual mechanisms that encode edge blur in images. Our previous work suggested that the visual system spatially differentiates the luminance profile twice to create the 'signature' of the edge, and then evaluates the spatial scale of this signature profile by applying Gaussian derivative templates of different sizes. The scale of the best-fitting template indicates the blur of the edge. In blur-matching experiments, a staircase procedure was used to adjust the blur of a comparison edge (40% contrast, 0.3 s duration) until it appeared to match the blur of test edges at different contrasts (5% - 40%) and blurs (6 - 32 min of arc). Results showed that lower-contrast edges looked progressively sharper. We also added a linear luminance gradient to blurred test edges. When the added gradient was of opposite polarity to the edge gradient, it made the edge look progressively sharper. Both effects can be explained quantitatively by the action of a half-wave rectifying nonlinearity that sits between the first and second (linear) differentiating stages. This rectifier was introduced to account for a range of other effects on perceived blur (Barbieri-Hesse and Georgeson, 2002 Perception 31 Supplement, 54), but it readily predicts the influence of the negative ramp. The effect of contrast arises because the rectifier has a threshold: it not only suppresses negative values but also small positive values. At low contrasts, more of the gradient profile falls below threshold and its effective spatial scale shrinks in size, leading to perceived sharpening.

In Information Filtering (IF) a user may be interested in several topics in parallel. But IF systems have been built on representational models derived from Information Retrieval and Text Categorization, which assume independence between terms. The linearity of these models results in user profiles that can only represent one topic of interest. We present a methodology that takes into account term dependencies to construct a single profile representation for multiple topics, in the form of a hierarchical term network. We also introduce a series of non-linear functions for evaluating documents against the profile. Initial experiments produced positive results.

For a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), the flux linkage characteristic is the most basic magnetic characteristic, and many other quantities, including the incremental inductance, back emf, and electromagnetic torque can be determined indirectly from it. In this paper, two methods of measuring the flux linkage profile of an SRM from the phase winding voltage and current measurements, with and without rotor locking devices, are presented. Torque, incremental inductance and back emf characteristics of the SRM are then obtained from the flux linkage measurements. The torque of the SRM is also measured directly as a comparison, and the closeness of the calculated and directly measured torque curves suggests the validity of the method to obtain the SRM torque, incremental inductance and back emf profiles from the flux linkage measurements. © 2013 IEEE.

Direct-drive linear reciprocating compressors offer numerous advantages over conventional counterparts which are usually driven by a rotary induction motor via crank shaft However, to ensure efficient and reliable operation under all conditions, it is essential that the motor current of the linear compressor follows a sinusoidal command profile with a frequency which matches the system resonant frequency. This paper describes a hybrid current controller for the linear compressors. It comprises a conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller, and a B-spline neural network compensator which is trained on-line and in real-time in order to minimize the current tracking error under all conditions with uncertain disturbances. It has been shown that the hybrid current controller has a superior steady-state and transient performance over the conventional carrier based PI controller. The performance of the proposed hybrid controller has been demonstrated by extensive simulations and experiments. It has also been shown that the linear compressor operates stably under the current feedback control and the piston stroke can be adjusted by varying the amplitude of the current command. © 2007 IEEE.

Spectrally modulated Airy-based pulses peak amplitude modulation (PAM) in linear dispersive media is investigated, designed, and numerically simulated. As it is shown here, it is possible to design the spectral modulation of the initial Airy-based pulses to obtain a pre-defined PAM profile as the pulse propagates. Although optical pulses self-amplitude modulation is a well-known effect under non-linear propagation, the designed Airy-based pulses exhibit PAM under linear dispersive propagation. This extraordinary linear propagation property can be applied in many kinds of dispersive media, enabling its use in a broad range of experiments and applications. © 2013 Optical Society of America.

Differences in lipid metabolism associate with age-related disease development and lifespan. Inflammation is a common link between metabolic dysregulation and aging. Saturated fatty acids (FAs) initiate pro-inflammatory signalling from many cells including monocytes; however, no existing studies have quantified age-associated changes in individual FAs in relation to inflammatory phenotype. Therefore, we have determined the plasma concentrations of distinct FAs by gas chromatography in 26 healthy younger individuals (age < 30 years) and 21 healthy FA individuals (age > 50 years). Linear mixed models were used to explore the association between circulating FAs, age and cytokines. We showed that plasma saturated, poly- and mono-unsaturated FAs increase with age. Circulating TNF-α and IL-6 concentrations increased with age, whereas IL-10 and TGF-β1 concentrations decreased. Oxidation of MitoSOX Red was higher in leucocytes from FA adults, and plasma oxidized glutathione concentrations were higher. There was significant colinearity between plasma saturated FAs, indicative of their metabolic relationships. Higher levels of the saturated FAs C18:0 and C24:0 were associated with lower TGF-β1 concentrations, and higher C16:0 were associated with higher TNF-α concentrations. We further examined effects of the aging FA profile on monocyte polarization and metabolism in THP1 monocytes. Monocytes preincubated with C16:0 increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to phorbol myristate acetate-induced differentiation through ceramide-dependent inhibition of PPARγ activity. Conversely, C18:1 primed a pro-resolving macrophage which was PPARγ dependent and ceramide dependent and which required oxidative phosphorylation. These data suggest that a midlife adult FA profile impairs the switch from proinflammatory to lower energy, requiring anti-inflammatory macrophages through metabolic reprogramming.
