Creative activities including arts are characteristic to humankind. Our understanding of creativity is limited, yet there is substantial research trying to mimic human creativity in artificial systems and in particular to produce systems that automatically evolve art appreciated by humans. We propose here to model human visual preference by a set of aesthetic measures identified through observation of human selection of images and then use these for automatic evolution of aesthetic images. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

The role of human granulocytes in the promotion of procainamide (PA) toxicity in vitro has been studied and one of the agents responsible for DNA strand scission and cell death in human target cells has been characterized. Crude peripheral blood mononuclear cells (cPBMNs) isolated by density centrifugation, and the lymphocyte cell lines--CCRF-HSB2 and WIL-2NS--were exposed to PA, and DNA strand breaks were quantified by fluorescent analysis of DNA unwinding. Therapeutic plasma concentrations of PA (0-50 microM) caused dose-dependent cytotoxicity, determined by dye exclusion, and strand breaks in cPBMNs incubated for 3 and 1.5 hr at 37 degrees, respectively. Using 50 microM PA a five-fold increase in DNA strand breaks was observed after 1.5 hr, with significant induction of strand breaks also being observed for 10 and 25 microM concentrations. Toxicity was much reduced in lymphocyte cell lines (maximal killing = 3.0% at 50 microM PA compared with 13.2% in cPBMNs). A similar decrease in toxicity was observed where N-acetyl procainamide (NAPA) was substituted for PA (less than 50% of strand breaks at all concentrations). Further investigations showed that the presence of a contaminating granulocyte population in the cPBMN fraction was responsible for the induction of PA toxicity. Incubation of a highly enriched granulocyte population with PA for 1 hr prior to exposure to purified peripheral blood mononuclear cells (pPBMNs) led to the complete restoration of the toxic effects. The resulting cyto- and genotoxicity were not significantly different to levels observed in cPBMNs. Significantly, incubation of granulocytes with NAPA did not induce toxicity in target pPBMNs. Ultrafiltration of granulocyte supernatants led to the identification of two toxic fractions of < 3000 and > 30,000 Da. Temporal studies showed that the toxicity associated with the < 3000 Da fraction appeared during the first 10-15 min incubation with PA whereas the > 30,000 Da fraction did not display significant toxicity until the 40-60 min period. Further assessment of the nature of these agents indicated that the 30,000 Da fraction was a protein. SDS-PAGE analysis showed an inducible 17,800 Da species appearing in granulocyte supernatants after 40 min incubation with PA. Dot blot analysis indicated that tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) was present in the > 30,000 Da fraction. Evidence that TNF alpha was the high-molecular weight species responsible for PA-induced toxicity was obtained from neutralization assays employing an anti-TNF alpha antibody.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

During the 1830s, Marshall Hall carried out innumerable experiments on a great variety of animals to establish the concept of a ‘reflex arc’. In France F.L.Goltz showed that decerebrate frogs were still capable of complex behaviours. Thomas Laycock in England and Ivan Sechenov in Russia sought to apply the reflex idea to the brain. This paper follows the debate in the periodical literature of mid-Victorian England and discusses the contributions of WB Carpenter, Herbert Spencer, TH Huxley, W Clifford and others. The previous outing of this issue in the post-Cartesian seventeenth century had been largely suppressed by ecclesiastical authority. In the nineteenth century ecclesiastical power had waned, at least in England, and the debate could take a more open form. As neurophysiology and behavioural science developed, with the widespread acceptance of Darwinian evolution, it became more and more difficult to deny that brain and mind were part of the natural world and subject to the usual laws of cause and effect. This, of course, had powerful implications for the human self-image and for jurisprudence. These implications are still with us and the work of neurophysiologists such as Benjamin Libet have only reinforced them. Should humans be regarded as ‘automata’ and, if so, what becomes of ‘free will’, ‘responsibility’, and the rule of law? The Victorian debate is still useful and relevant.

Managing Human Resources in the Middle East provides the reader with an understanding of the dynamics of HRM in this important region. Systematic analysis highlights the main factors and variables dictating HRM policies and practices within each country. Diverse and unique cultural, institutional and business environment factors which play a significant role in determining HRM systems in the region are also elaborated upon. The text moves from a general overview of HRM in the Middle-East to an exploration of the current status, role and strategic importance of the HR function in a wide-range of country-specific chapters, before highlighting the emerging HRM models and future challenges for research, policy and practice. This text is invaluable reading for academics, students and practitioners alike.

This study uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to estimate the degree of technical, allocative and cost efficiency in individual public and private health centres in Zambia; and to identify the relative inefficiencies in the use of various inputs among individual health centers. About 83% of the 40 health centres were technically inefficient; and 88% of them were both allocatively and cost inefficient. The privately owned health centers were found to be more efficient than public facilities. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

This paper provides an overview of the scenario of management of human resources and the factors influencing the same in the Sultanate of Oman. The initial section of the paper builds the case for investigating HRM practices in the Omani context. This is followed by an analysis of the background information and aspects of social environment of the Sultanate of Oman along with key national initiatives that are likely to influence the take-up and endorsement of HRM in Oman. Next, research evidence in support of key issues related to management of human resources is presented, and conclusions are drawn by analysing the significance of the reported findings. This is done by considering the current situation in Oman and by assessing key challenges for the future.

This research was concerned with identifying factors which may influence human reliability within chemical process plants - these factors are referred to as Performance Shaping Factors (PSFs). Following a period of familiarization within the industry, a number of case studies were undertaken covering a range of basic influencing factors. Plant records and site `lost time incident reports' were also used as supporting evidence for identifying and classifying PSFs. In parallel to the investigative research, the available literature appertaining to human reliability assessment and PSFs was considered in relation to the chemical process plan environment. As a direct result of this work, a PSF classification structure has been produced with an accompanying detailed listing. Phase two of the research considered the identification of important individual PSFs for specific situations. Based on the experience and data gained during phase one, it emerged that certain generic features of a task influenced PSF relevance. This led to the establishment of a finite set of generic task groups and response types. Similarly, certain PSFs influence some human errors more than others. The result was a set of error type key words, plus the identification and classification of error causes with their underlying error mechanisms. By linking all these aspects together, a comprehensive methodology has been forwarded as the basis of a computerized aid for system designers. To recapitulate, the major results of this research have been: One, the development of a comprehensive PSF listing specifically for the chemical process industries with a classification structure that facilitates future updates; and two, a model of identifying relevant SPFs and their order of priority. Future requirements are the evaluation of the PSF listing and the identification method. The latter must be considered both in terms of `useability' and its success as a design enhancer, in terms of an observable reduction in important human errors.
Development of a multicellular co-culture model of normal and cystic fibrosis human airways in vitro

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal inherited disease among Caucasians and arises due to mutations in a chloride channel, called cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator. A hallmark of this disease is the chronic bacterial infection of the airways, which is usually, associated with pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. aureus and recently becoming more prominent, B. cepacia. The excessive inflammatory response, which leads to irreversible lung damage, will in the long term lead to mortality of the patient at around the age of 40 years. Understanding the pathogenesis of CF currently relies on animal models, such as those employing genetically-modified mice, and on single cell culture models, which are grown either as polarised or non-polarised epithelium in vitro. Whilst these approaches partially enable the study of disease progression in CF, both types of models have inherent limitations. The overall aim of this thesis was to establish a multicellular co-culture model of normal and CF human airways in vitro, which helps to partially overcome these limitations and permits analysis of cell-to-cell communication in the airways. These models could then be used to examine the co-ordinated response of the airways to infection with relevant pathogens in order to validate this approach over animals/single cell models. Therefore epithelial cell lines of non-CF and CF background were employed in a co-culture model together with human pulmonary fibroblasts. Co-cultures were grown on collagen-coated permeable supports at air-liquid interface to promote epithelial cell differentiation. The models were characterised and essential features for investigating CF infections and inflammatory responses were investigated and analysed. A pseudostratified like epithelial cell layer was established at air liquid interface (ALI) of mono-and co-cultures and cell layer integrity was verified by tight junction (TJ) staining and transepithelial resistance measurements (TER). Mono- and co-cultures were also found to secrete the airway mucin MUC5AC. Influence of bacterial infections was found to be most challenging when intact S. aureus, B. cepacia and P. aeruginosa were used. CF mono- and co-cultures were found to mimic the hyperinflammatory state found in CF, which was confirmed by analysing IL-8 secretions of these models. These co-culture models will help to elucidate the role fibroblasts play in the inflammatory response to bacteria and will provide a useful testing platform to further investigate the dysregulated airway responses seen in CF.

In an attempt to better understand the impact of the World Bank on human development in poor countries, we use cross-country data on African countries for the 1990–2002 period to examine this relationship. The coefficient estimates of our parsimonious fixed-effects models indicate that while loans and grants of the Bank have had a positive impact on some relatively short-term indicators of health and education in an average African country, there is little evidence to suggest that such loans and grants have helped these countries to consolidate on the short-term gains.

This paper discusses how issues of people management are addressed in Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It also highlights the indigenous approaches to human resource management (HRM) that have surfaced in the Indian SME context. The research formulation has been built on the mapping of people-management practices in two SME case studies, one of which is also a family-based organization. The analysis shows that indigenous realities in HRM in Indian SMEs relate mainly to the provision of financial, emotional and social support to the workforce; employee involvement (EI) practices; recruitment; skill development; managing employee relations; and managing vis-à-vis labor law framework. The paper argues that in the sphere of people management in SMEs, the willingness to innovate and formalize the HR systems is constrained by a kind of bounded rationality, i.e., the owners of SMEs mostly believe that they are already doing what is humanly possible in this regard. The analysis has an important message for concerned practitioners—in order to realize their full potential and to progress towards fulfilling their vision; SMEs eventually have to intertwine indigenization and formalization for their people management approaches.
