The aim of this study was to prepare a ferromagnetic polymer using the design elements of molecular magnets. This involved the preparation of co-polyradicals of phenylacetylenes bearing nitronyl nitroxides and nitro/cyano groups. The magnetic properties of the materials were determined using a SQUID magnetometer. A novel rhodium catalyst, Rh(NBD)(NH3)Cl, was prepared in order to obtain good yields of polymerisation. A wide range of substituted phenylacetylenes were first homopolymerised in order to assess the efficiency of the catalyst. Yields were generally high, between 75% and 98%, and the time of polymerisation was short (one hour). SEC analysis revealed that the Mw of the polymers were in the range of 200,000 and 250,000. The discovery that phenylboronic acid acts a co-catalyst for the polymerisation served to increase the yields by 10% to 20% but the Mw of the polymers was reduced to approximately 100,000. Co-polyradicals were prepared in good to excellent yield using the new catalyst. The magnetic properties in the temperature range of 300K to 1.8K were investigated by SQUID, which revealed a spin glass system, antiferromagnets and possible dipolar magnets. Short-range ferromagnetic interactions between 300K and 100K were found in a co-polyradical containing nitronyl nitroxide and cyano substituted monomers. The magnetic properties were dependent upon both the type of monomers utilised and the ratio between them. The effects of ring substituents on the terminal alkyne have been studied by carbon-13 NMR. There was no correlation however, between the chemical shift of terminal alkyne and the polymerisability of the monomer.

[Cu(hyetrz)3](CF3SO3)2·H2O [hyetrz = 4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole] represents the first structurally characterised ferromagnetically coupled CuII chain compound containing triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges. catena-[μ-Tris{4-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-1,2,4-triazole-N1,N2}copper(II)] bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) hydrate (C14H23F6S2O10CuN9) crystallises in the triclinic space group Pl, a = 13.54(3), b = 14.37(3), c = 15.61(4) Å, α = 95.9(1), β = 104.9(1), γ = 106.5(1)°, V = 2763(11) Å3, Z = 4 (CuII units). The CuII ions are linked by triple N1,N2-1,2,4-triazole bridges yielding an alternating chain with Cu1−Cu2 = 3.8842(4) Å and Cu2−Cu3 = 3.9354(4) Å. Analysis of the magnetic data according to a high-temperature series expansion gives a J value of +1.45(3) cm−1. A new nonlinear electrodynamic phenomenon in layered superconducting slabs irradiated on one side by plane electromagnetic waves in the terahertz range is predicted and studied theoretically. It is shown that the surface reactance of a sample and its reflection coefficient have hysteresis behavior when the amplitude of the incident wave is changed. The analogy between the electrodynamic problem of the electromagnetic field distribution in a superconductor and the mechanical problem of particle motion in a central field is also discussed.

A variation of low-density parity check (LDPC) error-correcting codes defined over Galois fields (GF(q)) is investigated using statistical physics. A code of this type is characterised by a sparse random parity check matrix composed of C non-zero elements per column. We examine the dependence of the code performance on the value of q, for finite and infinite C values, both in terms of the thermodynamical transition point and the practical decoding phase characterised by the existence of a unique (ferromagnetic) solution. We find different q-dependence in the cases of C = 2 and C ≥ 3; the analytical solutions are in agreement with simulation results, providing a quantitative measure to the improvement in performance obtained using non-binary alphabets.

Using analytical methods of statistical mechanics, we analyse the typical behaviour of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel with binary inputs under low-density parity-check (LDPC) network coding and joint decoding. The saddle point equations for the replica symmetric solution are found in particular realizations of this channel, including a small and large number of transmitters and receivers. In particular, we examine the cases of a single transmitter, a single receiver and symmetric and asymmetric interference. Both dynamical and thermodynamical transitions from the ferromagnetic solution of perfect decoding to a non-ferromagnetic solution are identified for the cases considered, marking the practical and theoretical limits of the system under the current coding scheme. Numerical results are provided, showing the typical level of improvement/deterioration achieved with respect to the single transmitter/receiver result, for the various cases. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The chromium chalcogenide spinels, MCr2X4 (M = Zn, Cd, Hg; X = O, S, Se), have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. In each case the crystal structure is that of a normal spinel with the chromium ions exclusively occupying the octahedral (B) sites, so that when diamagnetic ions are located at the tetrahedral (A) sites the only magnetic interactions present are those between B-site ions. Despite such apparently simple circumstances a rich variety of magnetic behaviour is exhibited. For the oxides the ground state spin configurations are antiferromagnetic whilst for the selenides ferromagnetic interactions dominate and several authors have drawn attention to the fact that the nature of the dominant interaction is a function of the nearest neighbour chromium - chromium separation. However, at least two of the compounds exhibit spiral structures and it has been proved difficult to account for the various spin configurations within a unified theory of the magnetic interactions involved. More recently, the possibility of formulating a simplified interpretation of the magnetic interactions has been provided by the discovery that the crystal struture of spinels does not always conform to the centrosymmetrical symmetry Fd3m that has been conventionally assumed. The deviation from this symmetry is associated with small < 111> displacements of the octahedrally coordinated metal ions and the structures so obtained are more correctly referred to the non-centrosymmetrical space group F43m. In the present study, therefore, extensive X-ray diffraction data have been collected from four chromium chalcogenide specimens and used to refine the corresponding structural parameters assuming F43m symmetry and also with conventional symmetry. The diffracted intensities from three of the compounds concerned cannot be satisfactorily accounted for on the basis of conventional symmetry and new locations have been found for the chromium ions in these cases. It is shown, however, that these displacements in chromium positions only partially resolve the difficulties in interpreting the magnetic behaviour. A re-examination of the magnetic data from different authors indicates much greater uncertainty in their measurements than they had claimed. By taking this into consideration it is shown that a unified theory of magnetic behaviour for the chromium chalcogenide spinels is a real possibility.

Methods for understanding classical disordered spin systems with interactions conforming to some idealized graphical structure are well developed. The equilibrium properties of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, which has a densely connected structure, have become well understood. Many features generalize to sparse Erdös- Rényi graph structures above the percolation threshold and to Bethe lattices when appropriate boundary conditions apply. In this paper, we consider spin states subject to a combination of sparse strong interactions with weak dense interactions, which we term a composite model. The equilibrium properties are examined through the replica method, with exact analysis of the high-temperature paramagnetic, spin-glass, and ferromagnetic phases by perturbative schemes. We present results of replica symmetric variational approximations, where perturbative approaches fail at lower temperature. Results demonstrate re-entrant behaviors from spin glass to ferromagnetic phases as temperature is lowered, including transitions from replica symmetry broken to replica symmetric phases. The nature of high-temperature transitions is found to be sensitive to the connectivity profile in the sparse subgraph, with regular connectivity a discontinuous transition from the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phases is apparent.

When a ferromagnetic steel billet was heated by induction a large increase in the amplitude of longitudinal vibration frequently occurred as a result of resonance. This happened when a natural frequency of the bar coincided with twice the heating frequency or multiples thereof. The temperature at which resonance occurred depended on a number of factors including billet length and heating power. Resonance was most often observed when the surface temperature of the billet reached the Curie point. It is well established that magnetostrictive vibrations occur in a ferromagnetic material subjected to an alternating electromagnetic field, but existing data suggests that linear magnetostriction decreases towards the Curie point. Linear magnetostriction was measured in a sample of mild steel up to 800ºC using a high temperature strain gauge. The magnetostriction constant 100 was calculated assuming an average grain orientation in mild steel. The data was found to be comparable to that published for single crystals of iron. It was discovered that linear magnetostriction was responsible for resonance below 600ºC but not for temperatures near the Curie point. Other possible causes of resonance such as forces produced by the interaction between eddy currents and the alternating electromagnetic field, the alpha to gamma phase transformation and the existence of a thin ferromagnetic layer were investigated. None were found to account for resonance in bars of mild steel heated by induction. Experimental work relating to the induction heating of steel is compared to previous work on the subject of electromagnetic generation of ultrasound where a similar increase of the amplitude of longitudinal waves in steel is reported at the Curie point. It is concluded that the two phenomena are related as they show strong similarities.

Fe3O4 GaAs hybrid structures have been studied using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and low-temperature vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM). The samples were prepared by oxidizing epitaxial Fe thin films in a partial pressure of 5× 10-5 mbar of oxygen at 500 K for 180 s. Clear RHEED patterns were observed, suggesting the epitaxial growth of Fe oxides with a cubic structure. The XPS spectra show that the oxides were Fe3O4 rather than γ- Fe2O3, as there were no shake-up satellites between the two Fe 2p peaks. This was further confirmed by the XMCD measurements, which show ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe cations, with no evidence of intermixing at the interface. The VSM measurements show that the films have a magnetic uniaxial anisotropy and a "quick" saturation property, with the easy axes along the [011] direction. This detailed study offers further insight into the structure, interface, and magnetic properties of this hybrid Fe3O4 GaAs (100) structure as a promising system for spintronic application. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

We modify a nonlinear σ model (NLσM) for the description of a granular disordered system in the presence of both the Coulomb repulsion and the Cooper pairing. We show that under certain controlled approximations the action of this model is reduced to the Ambegaokar-Eckern-Schön (AES) action, which is further reduced to the Bose-Hubbard (or “dirty-boson”) model with renormalized coupling constants. We obtain an effective action which is more general than the AES one but still simpler than the full NLσM action. This action can be applied in the region of parameters where the reduction to the AES or the Bose-Hubbard model is not justified. This action may lead to a different picture of the superconductor-insulator transition in two-dimensional systems.

We suggest a variant of the nonlinear σ model for the description of disordered superconductors. The main distinction from existing models lies in the fact that the saddle point equation is solved nonperturbatively in the superconducting pairing field. It allows one to use the model both in the vicinity of the metal-superconductor transition and well below its critical temperature with full account for the self-consistency conditions. We show that the model reproduces a set of known results in different limiting cases, and apply it for a self-consistent description of the proximity effect at the superconductor-metal interface.

A two degrees of freedom (2-DOF) actuator capable of producing linear translation, rotary motion, or helical motion would be a desirable asset to the fields of machine tools, robotics, and various apparatuses. In this paper, a novel 2-DOF split-stator induction motor was proposed and electromagnetic structure pa- rameters of the motor were designed and optimized. The feature of the direct-drive 2-DOF induction motor lies in its solid mover ar- rangement. In order to study the complex distribution of the eddy current field on the ferromagnetic cylinder mover and the motor’s operating characteristics, the mathematical model of the proposed motor was established, and characteristics of the motor were ana- lyzed by adopting the permeation depth method (PDM) and finite element method (FEM). The analytical and numerical results from motor simulation clearly show a correlation between the PDM and FEM models. This may be considered as a fair justification for the proposed machine and design tools.
