We present theory, numerical simulations and experimental observations of a 1D optical wave system. We show that this system is of a dual cascade type, namely, the energy cascading directly to small scales, and the photons or wave action cascading to large scales. In the optical context the inverse cascade is particularly interesting because it means the condensation of photons. We show that the cascades are induced by a six-wave resonant interaction process described by weak turbulence theory. We show that by starting with weakly nonlinear randomized waves as an initial condition, there exists an inverse cascade of photons towards the lowest wavenumbers. During the cascade nonlinearity becomes strong at low wavenumbers and, due to the focusing nature of the nonlinearity, it leads to modulational instability resulting in the formation of solitons. Further interaction of the solitons among themselves and with incoherent waves leads to the final condensate state dominated by a single strong soliton. In addition, we show the existence of the direct energy cascade numerically and that it agrees with the wave turbulence prediction.

An ordered macroporous host (mac-SiO2) has been used to prevent aggregation of layered photocatalysts based on carbon nitride. Using typical carbon nitride synthesis conditions, cyanamide was condensed at 550 °C in the presence and absence of mac-SiO2. Condensation in the absence of mac-SiO2 results in materials with structural characteristics consistent with the carbon nitride, melon, accompanied by ca. 2 wt% carbonization. For mac-SiO2 supported materials, condensation occurs with greater carbonization (ca. 6 wt%). On addition of 3 wt% Pt cocatalyst photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light is found to be up to 10 times greater for the supported composites. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy shows that excited state relaxation is more rapid for the mac-SiO2 supported materials suggesting faster electron-hole recombination and that supported carbon nitride does not exhibit improved charge separation. CO2 temperature programmed desorption indicates that enhanced photoactivity of supported carbon nitride is attributable to an increased surface area compared to bulk carbon nitride and an increase in the concentration of weakly basic catalytic sites, consistent with carbon nitride oligomers.

An efficient route to stabilize alumina mesophases derived from evaporation-induced self-assembly is reported after investigating various aspects in-depth: influence of the solvent (EtOH, s-BuOH, and t-BuOH) on the textural and structural properties of the mesophases based on aluminum tri-sec-butoxide (ATSB), synthesis reproducibility, role of nonvolatile acids, and the crystallization and thermal stability of the crystalline counterparts. Mesophase specific surface area and pore uniformity depend notably on the solvent; s-BuOH yields the highest surface area and pore uniformity. The optimal mesophase synthesis is reproducible with standard deviations in the textural parameters below 5%. The most pore-uniform mesophases from the three solvents were thermally activated at 1023 K to crystallize them into γ-alumina. The s-BuOH mesophase is remarkably thermally stable, retaining the mesoscopic wormhole order with 300 m2/g (0.45 cm3/g) and an increased acidic site density. These features are not obtained with EtOH or t-BuOH, where agglomerated γ-Al2O3 crystallites are formed with lower surface areas and broader pore size distributions. This was rationalized by the increase of the hydrolysis rate using EtOH and t-BuOH. t-BuOH dehydrates under the synthesis conditions or reacts with HCl, situations that increase the water concentration and rate of hydrolysis. It was found that EtOH exchanges rapidly, producing a highly reactive Al-ethoxide, thus enhancing the hydrolysis rate as well. Particle heterogeneity with random packing of fibrous and wormhole morphologies, attributed to the high hydrolysis rate, was observed for mesophases derived from both solvents. Such a low particle coordination favors coarsening with enlargement of the pore size distribution upon thermal treatment, explaining the lower thermal stability. Controlled hydrolysis and formation of low-polymerized Al species in s-BuOH are possibly responsible for the adequate assembly onto the surfactant. This was verified by the formation of a regular distribution of relatively size-uniform nanoparticles in the mesophase; high particle coordination prevents coarsening, favors densification, and maintains a relatively uniform pore size distribution upon thermal treatment. The acid removal in the evaporation is another key factor to promote network condensation in this route. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The moisture and air stable ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium tetrafluoroborate [bmim]BF4 and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium hexafluorophosphate [bmim]PF6 were used as ‘green' recyclable alternatives to volatile organic solvents (VOCs) for ethylenediammonium diacetate (EDDA) catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation between aldehydes or ketones with active methylene compounds. Both aldehydes and ketones gave satisfactory results. The ionic liquids containing catalyst EDDA were recycled several times with no decreases in yields and reaction rates. In the case of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, the reactions led to the formation of 3-substituted coumarins under standard reaction conditions.

Negatively charged globular proteins in solution undergo a condensation upon adding trivalent counterions between two critical concentrations C* and C**, C*condensation behavior above C** is caused by short-ranged electrostatic interactions between multivalent cations and acidic residues, mechanistically different from the case of DNA. Small-angle x-ray scattering indicates a short-ranged attraction between counterion-bound proteins near C* and C**. Monte Carlo simulations (under these strong electrostatic coupling conditions) support an effective inversion of charge on surface side chains through binding of the multivalent counterions.

The paper presents the simulation of the pyrolysis vapors condensation process using an Eulerian approach. The condensable volatiles produced by the fast pyrolysis of biomass in a 100 g/h bubbling fluidized bed reactor are condensed in a water cooled condenser. The vapors enter the condenser at 500 °C, and the water temperature is 15 °C. The properties of the vapor phase are calculated according to the mole fraction of its individual compounds. The saturated vapor pressure is calculated for the vapor mixture using a corresponding states correlation and assuming that the mixture of the condensable compounds behave as a pure fluid. Fluent 6.3 has been used as the simulation platform, while the condensation model has been incorporated to the main code using an external user defined function. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

The preparation of a steam-based hydrothermally stable transition alumina is reported. The gel was derived from a synthetic sol-gel route where Al-tri-sec-butoxide is hydrolysed in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant (EO20PO70EO20), HCl as the catalyst and water (H2O/Al = 6); the condensation was enhanced by treating the hydrolysed gel with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH), after which it was dried at 60 °C by solvent evaporation. The so-obtained mesophase was crystallized under argon at 1200 °C (1 h) producing a transition alumina containing δ/α, and possibly θ, alumina phases. Due to its surface acidity, the pyrolysis conditions transform the block copolymer into a cross-linked char structure that embeds the alumina crystallites. Calcination at 650 °C generates a fully porous material by burning the char; a residual carbon of 0.2 wt.% was found, attributed to the formation of surface (oxy)carbides. As a result, this route produces a transition alumina formed by nanoparticles of about 30 nm in size on average, having surface areas in the range of 59-76 m2 g-1 with well-defined mesopores centered at 14 nm. The material withstands steam at 900 °C with a relative surface area rate loss lower than those reported for δ-aluminas, the state-of-the-art MSU-X γ-alumina and other pure γ-aluminas. The hydrothermal stability was confirmed under relevant CH4 steam reforming conditions after adding Ni; a much lower surface area decay and higher CH4 conversion compared to a state-of-the-art MSU-X based Ni catalyst were observed. Two effects are important in explaining the properties of such an alumina: the char protects the particles against sintering, however, the dominant effect is provided by the TBAOH treatment that makes the mesophase more resistant to coarsening and sintering. We present a mean-field model of cloud evolution that describes droplet growth due to condensation and collisions and droplet loss due to fallout. The model accounts for the effects of cloud turbulence both in a large-scale turbulent mixing and in a microphysical enhancement of condensation and collisions. The model allows for an effective numerical simulation by a scheme that is conservative in water mass and keeps accurate count of the number of droplets. We first study the homogeneous situation and determine how the rain-initiation time depends on the concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and turbulence level. We then consider clouds with an inhomogeneous concentration of CCN and evaluate how the rain initiation time and the effective optical depth vary in space and time. We argue that over-seeding even a part of a cloud by small hygroscopic nuclei, one can substantially delay the onset and increase the amount of precipitation.

The influence of ionic strength and of the chemical nature of cations on the protein-protein interactions in ovalbumin solution was studied using small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS). The globular protein ovalbumin is found in dimeric form in solutions as suggested by SANS/SAXS experiments. Due to the negative charge of the proteins at neutral pH, the protein-protein interactions without any salt addition are dominated by electrostatic repulsion. A structure factor related to screened Coulombic interactions together with an ellipsoid form factor was used to fit the scattering intensity. A monovalent salt (NaCl) and a trivalent salt (YCl3) were used to study the effect of the chemical nature of cations on the interaction in protein solutions. Upon addition of NaCl, with ionic strength below that of physiological conditions (150 mM), the effective interactions are still dominated by the surface charge of the proteins and the scattering data can be understood using the same model. When yttrium chloride was used, a reentrant condensation behavior, i.e., aggregation and subsequent redissolution of proteins with increasing salt concentration, was observed. SAXS measurements reveal a transition from effective repulsion to attraction with increasing salt concentration. The solutions in the reentrant regime become unstable after long times (several days). The results are discussed and compared with those from bovine serum albumin (BSA) in solutions.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) cause peptic ulcer disease, but whether they interact with Helicobacter pylori to promote damage is controversial. Moreover, the reported induction of apoptosis in gastric cells by H. pylori lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (10-9 g /ml) contrasts with studies showing low immunological potency of this LPS. Therefore, the effects of LPS from H. pylori NCTC 11637 and Escherichia coli 0111:B4 on apoptosis in a primary culture of guinea-pig gastric mucous cells were investigated in the presence and absence of the NSAID, ibuprofen. Cell loss was estimated by a crystal violet assay, and apoptosis determined from caspase activity and from condensation and fragmentation of nuclei. Exposure to E. coli LPS for 24 h caused cell loss and enhanced apoptotic activity at concentrations ≥ 10-9 g/ml, but similar effects were only obtained with H. pylori LPS at concentrations ≥10-6 g/ml. Although ibuprofen (250 μM) caused cell loss and apoptosis, addition of either E. coli or H. pylori LPSs further enhanced these effects. In conclusion, LPS and ibuprofen interact to enhance gastric cell loss and apoptosis. In such interactions, E. coli LPS is more potent than that of H. pylori. The low potency of H. pylori LPS may contribute to a chronic low-grade gastritis that can be enhanced by the use of NSAIDs. © W. S. Maney & Son Ltd.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) induce apoptosis in gastrointestinal cancer cell lines. Similar actions on normal gastric epithelial cells could contribute to NSAID gastropathy. The present work therefore compared the actions of diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, and the cyclo-oxygenase-2 selective inhibitor, NS-398, on a primary culture of guinea-pig gastric mucous epithelial cells. Cell number was assessed by staining with crystal violet. Apoptotic activity was determined by condensation and fragmentation of nuclei and by assay of caspase-3-like activity. Necrosis was evaluated from release of cellular enzymes. Ibuprofen (250 μM for 24 h) promoted cell loss, and apoptosis, under both basal conditions and when apoptosis was increased by 25 μM N-Hexanoyl-D-sphingosine (C6-ceramide). Diclofenac (250 μM for 24 h) reduced the proportion of apoptotic nuclei from 5.2 to 2.1%, and caused inhibition of caspase-3-like activity, without causing necrosis under basal conditions. No such reduction in apoptotic activity was evident in the presence of 25 μM C6-ceramide. The inhibitory effect of diclofenac on basal caspase-3-like activity was also exhibited by the structurally similar mefenamic and flufenamic acids (1–250 μM), but not by niflumic acid. Inhibition of superoxide production by the cells increased caspase-3-like activity, but the inhibitory action of diclofenac on caspase activity remained. Diclofenac did not affect superoxide production. Diclofenac inhibited caspase-3-like activity in cell homogenates and also inhibited human recombinant caspase-3. In conclusion, NSAIDs vary in their effect on apoptotic activity in a primary culture of guinea-pig gastric mucous epithelial cells, and the inhibitory effect of diclofenac on basal apoptosis could involve an action on caspase activity.

High surface area nanosized α-alumina has been obtained by thermally treating a sol-gel-derived mesophase at 1200 C; the mesophase was synthesized by a sol-gel route involving evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) of a hydrolyzed gel from Al-tri-sec-butoxide in s-BuOH in the presence of a nonionic surfactant (EO20PO70EO20), HCl as catalyst, and water (H2O/Al = 6). The activated material renders moderate surface areas of about 8.4-10 m2 g-1, associated with significant crystallite coarsening. The key aspect to produce smaller crystallites is making the mesophase more resistant to coarsening. This was achieved by enhancing the condensation step by treating the hydrolyzed gel with tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide (TBAOH) before evaporation. The characteristics of the mesophase indicate condensation of the primary particles with less AlO5 unsaturated sites, at the expense of a lower solid yield due to small crystallites dissolution. The activated TBAOH condensed EISA material is composed of α-alumina aggregated crystallites of about 60-100 nm, and the material possesses surface areas ranging from 16 to 24 m2 g -1 due to the improved resistance to coarsening. At least two aspects are suggested to play a role in this. The worm-hole morphology of the mesophase aggregates yields high particle coordination, which favors densification rather than coarsening. Furthermore, the decrease of the AlO5 defect sites by the TBAOH condensation makes the mesophase less reactive and consequently more resistant to coarsening. © 2013 American Chemical Society.
