In industry the colour of a gold alloy electrodeposit is checked by visual comparison with standard panels. The aims of the present work have been to access the application of spectrophotmetric techniques to the measurement of the colour of gold alloy electrodeposits and to examine the factors that influence the colour of thin deposits. The minimum thickness of deposit required to produce its final colour and completely hide the underlying substrate was measured and found to depend on the nature of the substrate, the plating solution and the operating conditions. Bright and matt electrodeposits were studied. The influence of alloying gold by adding copper, silver and indium to the plating solution were investigated. CIE chromaticity coordinates were calculated from spectrophotometric data using a computer programme written for the purpose. The addition of silver to a simple gold bath caused the colour of the deposit to change from yellow through green to near white in a smooth progression as the amount of silver in solid solution steadily increased. The colour of deposits formed when additions of copper were made was complicated by the formation of intermediate phases. À colour in the blue region of the spectrum was obtained in a few experiments investigating the influence of indium additions to the gold bath.

The literature available on submerged arc welding of copper and copper alloys, submerged arc welding with strip electrodes, and related areas has been reviewed in depth. Copper cladding of mild steel substrates by deposition from strip electrodes using the submerged arc welding process has been successful. A wide range of parameters, and several fluxes have been investigated. The range of deposit compositions is 66.4% Cu to 95.7% Cu. The weld beads have been metallographically examined using optical and electron microscopy. Equating weld beads to a thermodynamical equivalent of iron has proven to be an accurate and simplified means of handling quantitative data for multicomponent welds. Empirical equations derived using theoretical considerations characterize the weld bead dimensions as functions of the welding parameters and hence composition. The melting rate for strip electrodes is dependent upon the current-voltage product. Weld nugget size is increased by increased thermal transfer efficiencies resulting from stirring which is current dependent. The presence of Fe2O3 in a flux has been demonstrated to diminish electrode melting rate and drastically increase penetration, making flux choice the prime consideration in cladding operations. A theoretical model for welding with strip electrodes and the submerged arc process is presented.

The size frequency distributions of discrete β-amyloid (Aβ) deposits were studied in single sections of the temporal lobe from patients with Alzheimer's disease. The size distributions were unimodal and positively skewed. In 18/25 (72%) tissues examined, a log normal distribution was a good fit to the data. This suggests that the abundances of deposit sizes are distributed randomly on a log scale about a mean value. Three hypotheses were proposed to account for the data: (1) sectioning in a single plane, (2) growth and disappearance ofdeposits, and (3) the origin ofdeposits from clusters of neuronal cell bodies. Size distributions obtained by serial reconstruction through the tissue were similar to those observed in single sections, which would not support the first hypothesis. The log normal distribution ofdeposit size suggests a model in which the rate of growth of a deposit is proportional to its volume. However, mean deposit size and the ratio of large to small deposits were not positively correlated with patient age or disease duration. The frequency distribution ofdeposits which were closely associated with 0, 1, 2, 3, or more neuronal cell bodies deviated significantly from a log normal distribution, which would not support the neuronal origin hypothesis. On the basis of the present data, growth and resolution ofdeposits would appear to be the most likely explanation for the log normal size distributions.

Glia may be implicated in the pathology of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in several ways: (1) glial cells could be involved in the formation of prion protein (PrPsc) deposits, (2) PrPsc deposits could stimulate the production of astrocytes and microglia, (3) PrPsc deposits could damage adjacent glial cells, and (4) glial cells could remove aggregates of PrPsc from the brain. To clarify the significance of glial cells in vCJD, the relationship between PrPsc deposits and their associated glia, together with neurons and blood vessels, was studied in six cases of vCJD. Multicentric PrPsc deposits were the largest and least frequent type of deposit observed and were more commonly associated with glial cells, neuronal perikarya, and blood vessels than the more common diffuse and florid PrPsc deposits. Diffuse PrPsc deposits were more frequently associated with glial cells and neurons than the florid deposits. The ratio of astrocytes to oligodendrocytes adjacent to PrPsc deposits was similar to normal brain but the ratio of astrocytes or oligodendrocytes to microglia was less than in normal brain. The intensity of immunolabelling of multicentric PrPsc deposits was positively correlated with the presence of associated vacuoles and negatively correlated with the frequency of microglia. The patterns of correlation between deposit morphology and associated glial cells and neurons were similar for the diffuse and florid type PrPsc deposits. Deposit size was most consistently correlated with the number of associated neurons and vacuoles. The data suggest in vCJD: (1) there was no evidence that glia were necessary for the formation of PrPsc deposits, (2) there is an increase in microglia which may be an attempt to remove PrPsc from the bain, and (3) PrPsc deposits could affect adjacent astrocytes and damage the blood brain barrier (BBB). © 2013 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. The research concerned the assessment of the pathways utilized by heavy metal pollutants in urban stormwater runoff. A separately sewered urban residential catchment of approximately 107 hectares in Chelmsley Wood, north-east Birmingham was the subject of the field investigation. The catchment area, almost entirely residential, had no immediate industrial heavy metal input, however, industry was situated to the north of the catchment. The perimeter of the catchment was bounded by the M6 motorway on the northern and eastern sides and was believed to contribute to aerial deposition. Metal inputs to the ground surface were assumed to be confined to normal suburban activities, namely, aerial deposition, vehicular activity and anthropological activities. A programme of field work was undertaken over a 12 month period, from July 1983 to July 1984. Monthly deposition rates were monitored using a network of deposit cannisters and roadside sediment and soil samples were taken. Stormwater samples were obtained for 19 separate events. All samples were analysed for iron, lead, zinc, copper, chromium, nickel and cadmium content. Rainfall was recorded on site with additional meteorological data obtained from local Meteorological Offices. Use was made of a simple conceptual model designed for the catchment to substantiate hypotheses derived from site investigations and literature, to investigate the pathways utilized for the transportation of heavy metals throughout the catchment.

The spatial patterns of diffuse, primitive and classic β/A4 deposits were studied in coronal sections of the hippocampus and adjacent gyri in 11 cases of Down's syndrome (DS) varying in age from 38 to 67 years. The objectives of the study were first, to compare the spatial patterns of β/A4 deposits revealed in DS with those reported in cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and second, to study how the spatial patterns of β/A4 deposits may develop in the tissue. The spatial patterns revealed in DS exhibited a number of similarities with those reported in AD: (1) the range and frequency of the different types of spatial pattern revealed were similar, (2) β/A4 deposits occurred in clusters and in many cortical tissues, the clusters were distributed in a regular pattern parallel to the pia, (3) the clusters of diffuse and primitive β/A4 deposits occurred in an alternating pattern along the cortex, and (4) the clusters of classic β/A4 deposits were not correlated with the clusters of the diffuse and primitive deposits. Primitive deposits may develop from the diffuse deposits in regions of the cortex where extracellular paired helical filaments were formed. However, clusters of the classic β/A4 deposits, which are formed in older cases, appear to develop independently of the diffuse and primitive deposits. © 1994 Springer-Verlag.

The spatial patterns of diffuse, primitive and classic beta/A4 deposits was studied in relation to blood vessels in 24 cortical tissues from five elderly cases of Alzheimer's disease with pronounced congophilic angiopathy (CA). Beta/A4 deposit subtypes and beta/A4 stained blood vessels were clustered in the tissue. In many instances, the clusters of beta/A4 deposits and blood vessels were regularly spaced along the cortical strip. Total beta/A4 deposits were positively correlated with blood vessels in five tissues only. Similarly, clusters of diffuse and primitive beta/A4 subtypes were each positively correlated with blood vessels in two brain regions. By contrast, clusters of classic beta/A4 deposits were positively correlated with blood vessels in 62% of the cortical tissues examined. These results suggest that in patients with significant CA, initial deposition of beta/A4 protein was unrelated to blood vessels. However, clusters of classic beta/A4 deposits appeared to be in phase with clusters of blood vessels along the cortex.

The size frequency distributions of diffuse, primitive and classic beta/A4 deposits was studied in single sections in the hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and lateral occipitotemporal gyrus (LOT) in five cases of Alzheimer's disease. In most brain regions, the size distribution of the diffuse deposits was significantly different from that of the primitive and classic deposits. The data suggested that larger diffuse deposits appeared to be converted less often into primitive and classic deposits. Significant differences in the size distribution of primitive deposits were commonly observed between brain regions in which there was no difference in the size distribution of the diffuse deposits. Hence, local brain factors may influence the size of diffuse deposit which can be converted into mature amyloid deposit.

The spatial patterns of diffuse, primitive, classic (cored) and compact (burnt-out) subtypes of beta/A4 deposits were studied in coronal sections of the frontal lobe and hippocampus, including the adjacent gyri, in nine cases of Alzheimer's disease (AD). If the more mature deposits were derived from the diffuse deposits then there should be a close association between their spatial patterns in a brain region. In the majority of tissues examined, all deposit subtypes occurred in clusters which varied in dimension from 200 to 6400 microns. In many tissues, the clusters appeared to be regularly spaced parallel to the pia or alveus. The mean dimension of the primitive deposit clusters was greater than those of the diffuse, classic and compact types. In about 60% of cortical tissues examined, the clusters of primitive and diffuse deposits were not in phase, i.e. they alternated along the cortical strip. Clusters of classic deposits appeared to be distributed independently of the diffuse deposit clusters. Cluster size of the primitive deposits was positively correlated with the density of the primitive deposits in a tissue but no such relationship could be detected for the diffuse deposits. This study suggested that there was a complex relationship between the clusters of the different subtypes of beta/A4 deposits. If the diffuse deposits do give rise to the primitive and classic varieties then factors unrelated to the initial deposition of beta/A4 in the form of diffuse plaques were important in the formation of the mature deposits.
