The research investigates the fuel property variations associated with the time of harvest and the duration of storage of Miscanthus x giganteus over a one year period. The crop has been harvested at three different times: early (September 2009), conventional (April 2010) and late (June 2010). Once harvested the crop was baled and stored. Biomass properties of samples taken from different storage zones were compared. The thermochemical properties have been investigated using a range of analytical equipment including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). In addition, bio-oil has been produced from the early, conventional and late harvest using a laboratory scale (300gh) fast pyrolysis unit. The potential organic liquid yield (ondry basis, also excluding the reaction water generated) based on the laboratory fast pyrolysis processing undertaken in this study, was found to vary between 2.82 and 3.18 dry tha for the early and the late harvest respectively. The bio-oil organic yield was reduced by approximately 11% (0.36tha) between the early and the late harvest. Char yield was also reduced by approximately 18% (0.61tha). The highest gas yield (18.03%-1.60tha) was observed for the conventional harvest. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the bio-oil shows that levoglucosan, methylbenzaldehyde and 1,2-benzenediol all increase as a consequence of delayed harvest. It was also observed that by delaying the harvest time the O:C atomic ratio is reduced and a more carbonaceous feedstock is produced. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The oculomotor synergy as expressed by the CA/C and AC/A ratios was investigated to examine its influence on our previous observation that whereas convergence responses to stereoscopic images are generally stable, some individuals exhibit significant accommodative overshoot. Using a modified video refraction unit while viewing a stereoscopic LCD, accommodative and convergence responses to balanced and unbalanced vergence and focal stimuli (BVFS and UBVFS) were measured. Accommodative overshoot of at least 0.3 D was found in 3 out of 8 subjects for UBVFS. The accommodative response differential (RD) was taken to be the difference between the initial response and the subsequent mean static steady-state response. Without overshoot, RD was quantified by finding the initial response component. A mean RD of 0.11 +/- 0.27 D was found for the 1.0 D step UBVFS condition. The mean RD for the BVFS was 0.00 +/- 0.17 D. There was a significant positive correlation between CA/C ratio and RD (r = +0.75, n = 8, p <0.05) for only UBVFS. We propose that inter-subject variation in RD is influenced by the CA/C ratio as follows: an initial convergence response, induced by disparity of the image, generates convergence-driven accommodation commensurate with the CA/C ratio; the associated transient defocus subsequently decays to a balanced position between defocus-induced and convergence-induced accommodations.

We propose a new mathematical model for efficiency analysis, which combines DEA methodology with an old idea-Ratio Analysis. Our model, called DEA-R, treats all possible ratios "output/input" as outputs within the standard DEA model. Although DEA and DEA-R generate different summary measures for efficiency, the two measures are comparable. Our mathematical and empirical comparisons establish the validity of DEA-R model in its own right. The key advantage of DEA-R over DEA is that it allows effective integration of the model with experts' opinions via flexible restrictive conditions on individual "output/input" pairs. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Elevated cholesterol in mid-life has been associated with increased risk of dementia in later life. We have previously shown that low density lipoprotein (LDL) is more oxidised in the plasma of dementia patients although total cholesterol levels remained unchanged [1]. We have investigated the hypothesis that amyloid beta production and neurodegeneration can be driven by oxidised lipids derived from LDL following the loss of blood brain barrier integrity with ageing. Therefore, we have investigated amyloid beta formation in SHSY5Y cells treated with LDL, minimally modified (ox) LDL, and lipids extracted from both forms of LDL. LDL-treated SHSY-5Y cell viability was not significantly decreased with up to 8 μg LDL/2 × 104 cells compared to untreated cells. However, 8 μg oxLDL protein/2 × 104 cells decreased the cell viability significantly by 33.7% (P < 0.05). A more significant decrease in cell viability was observed when treating cells with extracted lipids from 8 μg of LDL (by 32.7%; P < 0.01) and oxLDL (by 41%; P < 0.01). In parallel, the ratio of reduced to oxidised GSH was decreased; GSH concentrations were significantly decreased following treatment with 0.8 μg/ml oxLD-L (7.35 ± 0.58;P < 0.01), 1.6 μg/ml (5.27 ± 0.23; P < 0.001) and 4 μg/ml (5.31 ± 0.31; P < 0.001). This decrease in redox potential was associated with an increase acid sphingomyelinase activity and lipid raft formation which could be inhibited by desipramine; SHSY5Y cells treated with oxLDL, and lipids from LDL and oxLDL for 16 h showed significantly increased acid sphingomyelinase activity (5.32 ± 0.35; P < 0.05, 5.21 ± 0.6; P < 0.05, and 5.58 ± 0.44; P < 0.01, respectively) compared to control cells (2.96 ± 0.34). As amyloid beta production is driven by the activity of beta secretase and its association with lipid rafts, we investigated whether lipids from ox-LDL can influence amyloid beta by SHSY-5Y cells in the presence of oxLDL. Using ELISA and Western blot, we confirmed that secretion of amyloid beta oligomers is increased by SHSY-5Y cells in the presence of oxLDL lipids. These data suggest a mechanism whereby LDL, and more significantly oxLDL lipids, can drive amyloid beta production and cytotoxicity in neuronal cells.
