Of the myriad of pressing topics current in medical law and ethics, the issue of informed consent appears to be the ‘plainer sibling’. The decision by Cranston J in Birch v UCL Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2008 has brought into sharp relief that which many commentators already held to be true. Far from being the ‘plainer sibling’ when weighed against other prominent issues in medical law and ethics, the doctrine of informed consent, is one of the most significant principles to emerge in recent years.

Kinetic study on thermal decomposition of woods in oxidative environment

The purpose of this work is to gain knowledge on kinetics of biomass decomposition under oxidative atmospheres, mainly examining effect of heating rate on different biomass species. Two sets of experiments are carried out: the first set of experiments is thermal decomposition of four different wood particles, namely aspens, birch, oak and pine under an oxidative atmosphere and analysis with TGA; and the second set is to use large size samples of wood under different heat fluxes in a purpose-built furnace, where the temperature distribution, mass loss and ignition characteristics are recorded and analyzed by a data post-processing system. The experimental data is then used to develop a two-step reactions kinetic scheme with low and high temperature regions while the activation energy for the reactions of the species under different heating rates is calculated. It is found that the activation energy of the second stage reaction for the species with similar constituent fractions tends to converge to a similar value under the high heating rate.

Who creates the jobs?

Addresses Birch's hypothesis, made in 1979 and the subject of much debate since, that small businesses create the most new jobs, using the Office of National Statistics' new Business Structure Database and focusing on the 1998 cohort of new firms and their evolution up to 2008. Assesses: the size of the firms in the cohort; the distribution of jobs as firms moved between size bands; job creation trends in firms that survived with 20+ employees; and job creation by size band. Argues that the answer to the question of 'who creates the jobs?' depends on exactly how the question is framed.

Manufacture of controlled emulsions and particulates using membrane emulsification

Crossflow and rotating membrane emulsification techniques were used for making oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The emulsions produced from a variety of oils and monomers (viscosity 7–528 mPas) exhibited narrow size distributions over a wide droplet size range, with the average droplet size ranging from less than 1 µm up to 500 µm. The monomer emulsions were further encapsulated to produce microcapsules through subsequent polymerisation reactions. The monodispersity feature of the primary emulsions was retained after the encapsulation. In comparison with other homogenisation methods, our experimental results demonstrated that the membrane emulsification technique is not only superior in emulsion droplet size controls, but also advantageous in energy efficiency and industrial-scale productions.
