We introduce models of heterogeneous systems with finite connectivity defined on random graphs to capture finite-coordination effects on the low-temperature behaviour of finite-dimensional systems. Our models use a description in terms of small deviations of particle coordinates from a set of reference positions, particularly appropriate for the description of low-temperature phenomena. A Born-von Karman-type expansion with random coefficients is used to model effects of frozen heterogeneities. The key quantity appearing in the theoretical description is a full distribution of effective single-site potentials which needs to be determined self-consistently. If microscopic interactions are harmonic, the effective single-site potentials turn out to be harmonic as well, and the distribution of these single-site potentials is equivalent to a distribution of localization lengths used earlier in the description of chemical gels. For structural glasses characterized by frustration and anharmonicities in the microscopic interactions, the distribution of single-site potentials involves anharmonicities of all orders, and both single-well and double-well potentials are observed, the latter with a broad spectrum of barrier heights. The appearance of glassy phases at low temperatures is marked by the appearance of asymmetries in the distribution of single-site potentials, as previously observed for fully connected systems. Double-well potentials with a broad spectrum of barrier heights and asymmetries would give rise to the well-known universal glassy low-temperature anomalies when quantum effects are taken into account. © 2007 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Hirota et al. [6] found that the magneto-Archimedes force could be used to levitate biological materials at different heights in pressurized oxygen, providing the possibility to separate them. However the magnetic levitation of mineral particles has not been widely explored. With this in mind some preliminary experiments were performed by levitating pure mineral materials in a paramagnetic solution manganese (II) chloride. Besides the report of levitation heights of various mineral particles in manganese (II) chloride solution, the lines obtained from the basic formula provided by previous researchers were compared with experimental data. The act of cryogenic paramagnetic fluid in the magneto-Archimedes levitation was also demonstrated. The obtained results are compared with the same particle levitation heights in manganese (II) chloride solution. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

The law of contract can be a complex and technical subject, rvt the new edition of Jill Poole's Casebook on Contract provides a clear and well-structured exposition of the principles and rules through a comprehensive selection of case law, addressing all aspects encountered on undergraduate courses. Opening with a chapter of valuable advice and guidance on how to successfully develop and improve the essential skills of case-reading, featuring two worked examples, the coverage in this sixth edition expands to incorporate all recent significant decisions and judgments made by the House of Lords and Court of Appeal such as, Director General of Fair Trading v First National Bank plc, Farley v Skinner, Royal Bank of Scotland v Etridge and UCB Corporate Services v Williams. Interesting recent decisions in relation to battle of forms, terms, exemption clauses and misrepresentation are also included. Extracts have been chosen from a wide range of historical and contemporary cases to illustrate the reasoning processes of the court, why decisions are made and how legal principles are developed - enabling cases to be analysed and discussed independently while, taken as a whole, the chapters provide a sound understanding of the modern law of contract. The section on damages for breach of contract has been expanded to reassess Ruxley Electronics and Construction Ltd v Forsyth in the light of Farley v Skinner, the future of Addis v Gramophone Co Ltd is considered in the light of Johnson v Unisys Ltd and Attorney General v Blake is examined in the light of the decision in Esso Petroleum Co Ltd v Niad Ltd. As with previous editions, Casebook on Contract is an invaluable primary source and an essential study aid for all those following elements of contract law as part of the LLB and CPE, as well as for students from related disciplines such as Accounting and Business.
