E-atmospherics have been often analyzed in terms of functional features, leaving its characteristics' link to social capital co-creation as a fertile research area. Prior research have demonstrated the capacity of e-atmospherics' at modifying shopping habits towards deeper engagement. Little is known on how processes and cues emerging from the social aspects of lifestyle influence purchasing behavior. The anatomy of social dimension and ICT is the focus of this research, where attention is devoted to unpack the meanings and type of online mundane social capital creation. Taking a cross-product/services approach to better investigate social construction impact, our approach also involves both an emerging and a mature market where exploratory content analysis of landing page are done on Turkish and French web sites, respectively. We contend that by comprehending social capital, daily micro practices, habits and routine, a better and deeper understanding on e-atmospherics incumbent and potential effects on its multi-national e-customer will be acquired.

The purpose of this thesis is to increase understanding and contribute to knowledge about the attitudes and behaviour of men in contemporary France and Britain. The thesis has three main aims: firstly, to provide the first cross-national comparison of French and British writing and research on the place of men in contemporary society; secondly, to identify similarities and differences in the roles of men in France and Britain; and thirdly, to determine to what extent and in what way such similarities and differences are linked to the social structures and cultural background of each country. The thesis focuses on two main facets of the male experience: the relationship between men and women and the interaction between fathers and their children. Men's attitudes and behaviour are examined in relation to issues such as the division of household tasks and child care within the family, parental roles, female employment, role reversal, gender stereotyping and changes towards a new image of masculinity in society. Particular consideration is given to differences in governmental attitudes in France and Britain towards the introduction of family policy measures for men as fathers. The thesis ends with a discussion of legislative, social and educational measures which could be introduced in France and Britain in order to promote greater flexibility in men's roles and consequently improve gender equality in each country. The data analysed in the thesis are derived from a questionnaire-based empirical study involving 101 men in Britain and seventy-five men in France. The respondents' experience of and attitudes towards their roles in society are analysed and interpreted in the light of profile data relating to their family circumstances and with reference to knowledge about the broader socio-cultural context.

This article analyzes the role of expert witness testimony in the trials of social movement actors, discussing the trial of the "Kingsnorth Six" in Britain and the trials of activists currently mobilising against airport construction at Notre Dame des Landes in western France. Though the study of expert testimony has so far overwhelmingly concentrated on fact-finding and admissibility, the cases here reveal the importance of expert testimony not simply in terms of legal argument, but in "moral" or political terms, as it reflects and constitutes movement cognitive praxis. In the so-called climate change defence presented by the Kingsnorth Six, I argue that expert testimony attained a "negotiation of proximity," connecting different types of contributory expertise to link the scales and registers of climate science with those of everyday understanding and meaning. Expert testimony in the trials of activists in France, however, whilst ostensibly able to develop similar bridging narratives, has instead been used to construct resistance to the airport siting as already proximate, material, and embedded. To explain this, I argue that attention to the symbolic, as well as instrumental, functions of expert testimony reveals the crucial role that collective memory plays in the construction of both knowledge and grievance in these cases. Collective memory is both a constraint on and catalyst for mobilisation, defining the boundaries of the sayable. Testimony in trials both reflects and reproduces these elements and is a vital explanatory tool for understanding the narrativisation and communication of movement identities and objectives. © 2013 The Author. Oxysterols (OS), the polyoxygenated sterols, represent a class of potent regulatory molecules for important biological actions. Cytotoxicity of OS is one of the most important aspects in studies of OS bioactivities. However, studies, the structure-activity relationship (SAR) study in particular, have been hampered by the limited availability of structurally diverse OS in numbers and amounts. The aim of this project was to develop robust synthetic methods for the preparation of polyhydroxyl sterols, thereof, evaluate their cytotoxicity and establish structure-activity relationship. First, we found hydrophobicity of the side chain is essential for 7-HC's cytotoxicity, and a limited number of hydroxyl groups and a desired configuration on the A, B ring are required for a potent cytotoxicity of an OS, after syntheses and tests of a number of 7-HC's analogues against cancer cell lines. Then polyoxygenation of cholesterol A, B rings was explored. A preparative method for the synthesis of four diastereomerically pure cholest-4-en-3,6-diols was developed. Epoxidation on these cholest-4-en-3,6-diols showed that an allyl group exerts an auxiliary role in producing products with desired configuration in syntheses of the eight diastereomerically pure 45-epoxycholestane-3,6-diols. Reduction of the eight 45-epoxycholestane-3,6-diols produced all eight isomers of the cytotoxic 5α-acholestane 3β,5,6β-triol (CT) for the first time. Epoxide ring opening with protic or Lewis acids on the eight 45-epoxycholestane-3,6-diols are carefully studied. The results demonstrated a combination of an acid and a solvent affected the outcomes of a reaction dramatically. Acyl group participation and migration play an important role with numbers of substrates under certain conditions. All the eight 4,5-trans cholestane- 3,4,5,6-tetrols were synthesised through manipulation of acyl participation. Furthermore these reaction conditions were tested when a number of cholestane-3,4, 5,6,7-pentols and other C3-C7 oxygenated sterols were synthesised for the first time. Introduction of an oxygenated functional group through cholest-2-ene derivatives was studied. The elimination of 3-(4-toluenesulfonate) esters showed the interaction between the existing hydroxyls or acyls with the reaction centre often resulted in different products. The allyl oxidation, epoxidation and Epoxide ring opening reactions are investigated with these cholest-2-enes.
