This paper revisits the issue of intra-industry foreign direct investment (FDI). This issue was considered in Stephen Hymer's early work, but was not subsequently developed, and was largely ignored in the literature for some time. Using the example of the UK, this paper traces the patterns of intra-industry FDI, both across countries and industries, for both the manufacturing and service sectors. Despite the undoubted increase in the integration of goods and factor markets since the time of Hymer's writing, the analysis presented here shows that the pattern has changed little in the last 40 years. The paper then goes on to discuss the motives for intra-industry FDI, relating it to technology flows and factor cost differentials. Finally, we present some analysis relating intra-industry FDI to uneven development, both between developed and developing countries, and between regions of a developed country. It is clear that intra-industry FDI is still very much a developed country phenomenon, as Hymer suggested, with both developing countries and poorer regions of developed countries unlikely to reap any of the benefits. In this context, one-way and two-way FDI must be seen as different phenomena within the debate on globalisation. © The Author 2005. This paper contributes to the literature on the intra-firm diffusion of innovations by investigating the factors that affect the firm’s decision to adopt and use sets of complementary innovations. We define complementary innovations those innovations whose joint use generates super additive gains, i.e. the gain from the joint adoption is higher than the sum of the gains derived from the adoption of each innovation in isolation. From a theoretical perspective, we present a simple decision model, whereby the firm decides ‘whether’ and ‘how much’ to invest in each of the innovations under investigation based upon the expected profit gain from each possible combination of adoption and use. The model shows how the extent of complementarity among the innovations can affect the firm’s profit gains and therefore the likelihood that the firm will adopt these innovations jointly, rather than individually. From an empirical perspective, we focus on four sets of management practices, namely operating (OMP), monitoring (MMP), targets (TMP) and incentives (IMP) management practices. We show that these sets of practices, although to a different extent, are complementary to each other. Then, we construct a synthetic indicator of the depth of their use. The resulting intra-firm index is built to reflect not only the number of practices adopted but also the depth of their individual use and the extent of their complementarity. The empirical testing of the decision model is carried out using the evidence from the adoption behaviour of a sample of 1,238 UK establishments present in the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS). Our empirical results show that the intra-firm profitability based model is a good model in that it can explain more of the variability of joint adoption than models based upon the variability of adoption and use of individual practices. We also investigate whether a number of firm specific and market characteristics by affecting the size of the gains (which the joint adoption of innovations can generate) may drive the intensity of use of the four innovations. We find that establishment size, whether foreign owned, whether exposed to an international market and the degree of homogeneity of the final product are important determinants of the intensity of the joint adoption of the four innovations. Most importantly, our results point out that the factors that the economics of innovation literature has been showing to affect the intensity of use of a technological innovation do also affect the intensity of use of sets of innovative management practices. However, they can explain only a small part of the diversity of their joint adoption use by the firms in the sample.

This paper presents a simple profitability-based decision model to show how synergistic gains generated by the joint adoption of complementary innovations may influence the firm's adoption decision. For this purpose a weighted index of intra-firm diffusion is built to investigate empirically the drivers of the intensity of joint use of a set of complementary innovations. The findings indicate that establishment size, ownership structure and product market concentration are important determinants of the intensity of use. Interestingly, the factors that affect the extent of use of technological innovations do also affect that of clusters of management practices. However, they can explain only part of the heterogeneity of the benefits from joint use.

Survival studies were conducted on Legionella pneumophila cells that had been grown intracellulary in Acanthamoeba polyphaga and then exposed to polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), benzisothiazolone (BIT), 5-chloro-N-methylisothiazolone (CMIT) and tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB). Susceptibilities were also determined for L.pneumophila grown under nutrient sufficient and iron-, nitrogen- and phosphate-depleted conditions, in a chemically defined medium. BIT was relatively ineffective against cells grown under iron-depletion; in contrast iron-depleted conditions increased the susceptibilities of cells to PHMB, TTAB and CMIT. Cells grown under phosphate-depletion showed a marked increase in sensitivity towards all the biocides. Conversely, the activities of all four biocides were greatly reduced against L.pneumophila grown in amoebae. To study the physiological basis for the increased resistance of intra-amoebal grown legionella, the surface properties of the cells were examined by studying outer membrane proteins (OMs), lipopolysaccharides and cellular fatty acids. Intra-amoebal grown legionella were found to differ in several respects compared to cells grown in vitro; they contained a novel 15-kDal OM protein and a monosaturated straight-chain fatty acid (18:19). These compounds were also found in abundant quantities in the host amoeba. Intra-amoebal grown legionella contained more LPS bands than did in vitro grown organisms and were less susceptible to protease K digestion. Cells grown under phosphate depletion were markedly sensitive to protease K digestion and contained lower levels of LPS. Immunoblot analysis of intra-amoebal grown legionella with anti-acanthamoebal serum revealed that both the surface of the bacteria and sarkosyl extracted OMs contained amoebal proteins. These findings suggest that the 15-kDal OM protein is likely to be of amoebal origin and binds tightly to the OM of the bacterium. It is proposed that disruption of amoebal membranes, as a result of intra-amoebal infection liberates macromolecules, including a 15-kDal polypeptide, a major constituent of the membrane, which associates closely with the surface of the legionellae. Thus L.pneumophila which have extraneous membrane material bound to their surface may respond differently to biocide inactivation, as these macromolecules may act as a penetration barrier to such agents. This phenomenon could contribute to the recalcitrance of legionellae in water systems.

We investigate a digital back-propagation simplification method to enable computationally-efficient digital nonlinearity compensation for a coherently-detected 112 Gb/s polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shifted keying transmission over a 1,600 km link (20x80km) with no inline compensation. Through numerical simulation, we report up to 80% reduction in required back-propagation steps to perform nonlinear compensation, in comparison to the standard back-propagation algorithm. This method takes into account the correlation between adjacent symbols at a given instant using a weighted-average approach, and optimization of the position of nonlinear compensator stage to enable practical digital back-propagation.

The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC or ri) is a method of measuring correlation when the data are paired and therefore, should be used when experimental units are organised into groups. A useful analogy is with the unpaired or paired ‘t’ test to compare the differences between the means of two groups. In studies of reproducibility, there may actually be little difference between the ICC and Pearson’s ‘r’ for ‘true’ repeated measurements. If, however, there is a systematic change in the measurements made on the first compared with the second occasion, then the ICC will be significantly less than ‘r’, and less confidence would be placed in the reproducibility of the results.

We quantify the benefits of intra-channel nonlinear compensation in meshed optical networks, in view of network configuration, fibre design aspect, and dispersion management. We report that for a WDM optical transport network employing flexible 28Gbaud PM-mQAM transponders with no in-line dispersion compensation, intrachannel nonlinear compensation, for PM-16QAM through traffic, offers significant improvements of up to 4dB in nonlinear tolerance (Q-factor) irrespective of the co-propagating modulation format, and that this benefit is further enhanced (1.5dB) by increasing local link dispersion. For dispersion managed links, we further report that advantages of intra-channel nonlinear compensation increase with in-line dispersion compensation ratio, with 1.5dB improvements after 95% in-line dispersion compensation, compared to uncompensated transmission. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

A key dividing line in the literature on post-national citizenship concerns the role of collective identity. While some hold that a post-national form of identity is desirable in developing citizenship in contexts such as the European Union (EU), others question the defensibility of a collective identity at this supra-national level. The aim of this article is to intervene in this debate, drawing on qualitative research to consider the extent to which post-national citizenship should be accompanied by a form of post-national identity. The article takes the UK as a case study, and explores tensions between the immigration policies and rhetoric of the Coalition Government since 2010 and the post-national citizenship rights of EU citizens migrating into British local communities. It draws on independently collected qualitative data from the county of Herefordshire, UK, to argue that the persistent reinforcement of national identity reproduces national lines of difference which further problematise the full realisation of European citizenship. At a theoretical level, this highlights the need for the development of post-national citizenship rights to be accompanied by a paradigmatic shift in the way that collective identity is constituted in post-national contexts.

We have experimentally demonstrated an active loading sensor system based on a fiber ring laser with single-polarization output using an intra-cavity 45°-tilted fiber grating (45°-TFG). When the laser cavity fiber subjected to loading, the laser output is encoded with the load and can be measured and monitored by a power metre. A loading sensitivity as high as 0.033/ (kg·m-1) has been achieved using this laser. The experiment results clearly show that single polarization fiber laser may be developed to a low-cost high-sensitivity loading sensor system. © 2014 SPIE.
