Marketing scholars are increasingly recognizing the importance of investigating phenomena at multiple levels. However, the analyses methods that are currently dominant within marketing may not be appropriate to dealing with multilevel or nested data structures. We identify the state of contemporary multilevel marketing research, finding that typical empirical approaches within marketing research may be less effective at explicitly taking account of multilevel data structures than those in other organizational disciplines. A Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a previously published marketing study, demonstrates that different approaches to analysis of the same data can result in very different results (both in terms of power and effect size). The implication is that marketing scholars should be cautious when analyzing multilevel or other grouped data, and we provide a discussion and introduction to the use of hierarchical linear modeling for this purpose.

In this chapter, the authors use an EGARCH-ECM to estimate the pass-through effects of Foreign Exchange (FX) rate changes and changes in producers' prices for 20 U.K. export sectors. The long-run adjustments of export prices to FX rate changes and changes in producers' prices are within the range of -1.02% (for the Textiles sector) and -17.22% (for the Meat sector). The contemporaneous Pricing-To-Market (PTM) coefficients are within the range of -72.84% (for the Fuels sector) and -8.05% (for the Textiles sector). Short-run FX rate pass-through is not complete even after several months. Rolling EGARCH-ECMs show that the short and long-run effects of changes in FX rate and producers' prices vary substantially, as do asymmetry and volatility estimates before equilibrium is achieved.

WiMAX has been introduced as a competitive alternative for metropolitan broadband wireless access technologies. It is connection oriented and it can provide very high data rates, large service coverage, and flexible quality of services (QoS). Due to the large number of connections and flexible QoS supported by WiMAX, the uplink access in WiMAX networks is very challenging since the medium access control (MAC) protocol must efficiently manage the bandwidth and related channel allocations. In this paper, we propose and investigate a cost-effective WiMAX bandwidth management scheme, named the WiMAX partial sharing scheme (WPSS), in order to provide good QoS while achieving better bandwidth utilization and network throughput. The proposed bandwidth management scheme is compared with a simple but inefficient scheme, named the WiMAX complete sharing scheme (WCPS). A maximum entropy (ME) based analytical model (MEAM) is proposed for the performance evaluation of the two bandwidth management schemes. The reason for using MEAM for the performance evaluation is that MEAM can efficiently model a large-scale system in which the number of stations or connections is generally very high, while the traditional simulation and analytical (e.g., Markov models) approaches cannot perform well due to the high computation complexity. We model the bandwidth management scheme as a queuing network model (QNM) that consists of interacting multiclass queues for different service classes. Closed form expressions for the state and blocking probability distributions are derived for those schemes. Simulation results verify the MEAM numerical results and show that WPSS can significantly improve the network's performance compared to WCPS.

IEEE 802.16 standard specifies a contention based bandwidth request scheme for best-effort and non-real time polling services in Point-to-MultiPoint (PMP) architecture. In this letter we propose an analytical model for the scheme and study how the performances of bandwidth efficiency and channel access delay change with the contention window size, the number of contending subscriber stations, the number of slots allocated for bandwidth request and data transmission. Simulations validate its high accuracy. © 2007 IEEE.

Large-scale introduction of Organic Solar Cells (OSCs) onto the market is currently limited by their poor stability in light and air, factors present in normal working conditions for these devices. Thus, great efforts have to be undertaken to understand the photodegradation mechanisms of their organic materials in order to find solutions that mitigate these effects. This study reports on the elucidation of the photodegradation mechanisms occurring in a low bandgap polymer, namely, Si-PCPDTBT (poly[(4,4′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)dithieno[3,2-b:2′,3′-d]silole)-2,6-diyl-alt-(4,7-bis(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)-5,5′-diyl]). Complementary analytical techniques (AFM, HS-SPME-GC-MS, UV-vis and IR spectroscopy) have been employed to monitor the modification of the chemical structure of the polymer upon photooxidative aging and the subsequent consequences on its architecture and nanomechanical properties. Furthermore, these different characterization techniques have been combined with a theoretical approach based on quantum chemistry to elucidate the evolution of the polymer alkyl side chains and backbone throughout exposure. Si-PCPDTBT is shown to be more stable against photooxidation than the commonly studied p-type polymers P3HT and PCDTBT, while modeling demonstrated the benefits of using silicon as a bridging atom in terms of photostability. Abstract A new LIBS quantitative analysis method based on analytical line adaptive selection and Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) regression model is proposed. First, a scheme of adaptively selecting analytical line is put forward in order to overcome the drawback of high dependency on a priori knowledge. The candidate analytical lines are automatically selected based on the built-in characteristics of spectral lines, such as spectral intensity, wavelength and width at half height. The analytical lines which will be used as input variables of regression model are determined adaptively according to the samples for both training and testing. Second, an LIBS quantitative analysis method based on RVM is presented. The intensities of analytical lines and the elemental concentrations of certified standard samples are used to train the RVM regression model. The predicted elemental concentration analysis results will be given with a form of confidence interval of probabilistic distribution, which is helpful for evaluating the uncertainness contained in the measured spectra. Chromium concentration analysis experiments of 23 certified standard high-alloy steel samples have been carried out. The multiple correlation coefficient of the prediction was up to 98.85%, and the average relative error of the prediction was 4.01%. The experiment results showed that the proposed LIBS quantitative analysis method achieved better prediction accuracy and better modeling robustness compared with the methods based on partial least squares regression, artificial neural network and standard support vector machine.

This paper presents a theoretical model on the vibration analysis of micro scale fluid-loaded rectangular isotropic plates, based on the Lamb's assumption of fluid-structure interaction and the Rayleigh-Ritz energy method. An analytical solution for this model is proposed, which can be applied to most cases of boundary conditions. The dynamical experimental data of a series of microfabricated silicon plates are obtained using a base-excitation dynamic testing facility. The natural frequencies and mode shapes in the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical simulations for the lower order modes. The presented theoretical and experimental investigations on the vibration characteristics of the micro scale plates are of particular interest in the design of microplate based biosensing devices.
