The kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene using Re2O7/-Al_2O_3 as the catalyst were investigated under a variety of conditions. The experiments were carried out under high vacuum conditions. The product solutions were characterised by gas liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy. The initial kinetics of the metathesis of 1-hexene showed that the reaction was first order in the weight of the catalyst and second order in the concentration of 1-hexene. A kinetic scheme which correlated the experimental data with the metallocarbene chain mechanism postulated by Herisson and Chauvin and the kinetics of the reaction was explained using a model based on the Langmuir-Hinshelwood theory. The low conversion of 1-hexene to its products is due to termination reactions which most likely occur by the decomposition of the metallocyclobutane intermediate to produce a cyclopropane derivative and an inactive centre. The optimum temperature for the metathesis of 1-hexene over Re_2O_7/-Al2O3 is 45oC and above this temperature, the rate of metathesis decreases rapidly. Co-catalysts alter the active sites for metathesis so that the catalyst is more selective to the metathesis of 1-hexene. However, the regeneration of metathesis activity is much worse for promoted catalysts than for the unpromoted. The synthesis and metathesis of 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (9-decenyl)-1,3-oxazoline and 4,4-dimethyl-2-allowbreak (3-pentenyl)-1,3-oxazoline was attempted and the products were analysed by thin layer chromatography, infra-red, 13C and 1H nmr and mass spectroscopy. Obtaining the oxazolines in a good yield with high purity was difficult and consequently metathesis of the impure products did not occur.

Fully dense graphene nanosheet(GNS)/Al2O3 composites with homogeneously distributed GNSs of thicknesses ranging from 2.5 to 20 nm have been fabricated from ball milled expanded graphite and Al2O3 by spark plasma sintering. The percolation threshold of electrical conductivity of the as-prepared GNS/Al2O3 composites is around 3 vol.%, and this new composite outperforms most of carbon nanotube/Al2O3 composites in electrical conductivity. The temperature dependence of electrical conductivity indicated that the as-prepared composites behaved as a semimetal in a temperature range from 2 to 300 K.

A series of sulfated alumina catalysts were synthesised by wet impregnation with sulfate-containing solutions. The degree of surface sulfation and corresponding surface acidity could be readily tuned by varying the molarity of impregnating solution. Strong acid treatments (>0.1 M) induced aluminium-sulfate crystallisation with a concomitant decrease in porosity and surface acidity. Platinum-doped sulfated aluminas showed enhanced activity towards methane, ethane and propane combustion. Activity scaled with the degree of accessible surface sulfate and platinum loading, however C-H bond scission appeared rate-limiting over both pure and presulfated aluminas. The magnitude of sulfate-promoted propane oxidation was greatest under heavily oxidising conditions (C3H6∶O2 > 1:20) but independent of Pt loading, confirming that support-mediated alkane activation is the dominant factor in the promotional mechanism.

The development of catalytic materials for the efficient combustion of light alkanes is fundamentally important for both automotive pollution control and the control of emissions produced from bio-fuel combustion. The presence of trace gas-phase SO2 is known to promote low temperature propane combustion over conventional Pt/Al2O3 combustion catalysts, however, there have been no systematic efforts to isolate the respective roles of support and metal, and it remains unclear, which plays the dominant role in this unusual phenomenon. Light alkane combustion over Pt/Al2O3 using pre-sulfated alumina supports to tune the physicochemical catalyst properties was presented. Support sulfation significantly enhanced ethane combustion, and improved methane and propane light-off. Catalyst activity increased with Pt loading, while the magnitude of sulfate promotion scales with alkane chain length. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 228th ACS National Meeting (Philadelphia, PA 8/22-26/2004).

Sulphate-promoted alkane combustion has been investigated over a series of Pt/Al2O3 catalysts using pre-sulphated alumina supports. Catalyst sulphation greatly enhanced ethane combustion over Pt/Al2O3, and also improved methane and propane light-off performance. Catalyst activity increased with Pt loading, however the magnitude of sulphate promotion was independent of Pt loading under oxidising conditions, but scaled with alkane chain length. Propane combustion activity was directly proportional to the surface coverage of aluminium sulphate sites; support-mediated alkane activation is the dominant process in sulphate promotion.

The genesis of a catalytically active model Pt/Al2O3/NiAl{110} oxidation catalyst is described. An ultrathin, crystalline γ-Al2O3 film was prepared via direct oxidation of a NiAl{110} single-crystal substrate. The room-temperature deposition of Pt clusters over the γ-Al2O3 film was characterised by LEED, AES and CO titration and follows a Stranski–Krastanov growth mode. Surface sulfation was attempted via SO2/O2 adsorption and thermal processing over bare and Pt promoted Al2O3/NiAl{110}. Platinum greatly enhances the saturation SOx coverage over that of bare alumina. Over clean Pt/γ-Al2O3 surfaces some adsorbed propene desorbs molecularly [similar]250 K while the remainder decomposes liberating hydrogen. Coadsorbed oxygen or sulfate promote propene combustion, with adsorbed sulfoxy species the most efficient oxidant. The chemistry of these alumina-supported Pt clusters shows a general evolution from small polycrystalline clusters to larger clusters with properties akin to low-index, Pt single-crystal surfaces.

Impedance spectroscopy (IS) analysis is carried out to investigate the electrical properties of the metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structure fabricated on hydrogen-terminated single crystal diamond. The low-temperature atomic layer deposition Al2O3 is employed as the insulator in the MOS structure. By numerically analysing the impedance of the MOS structure at various biases, the equivalent circuit of the diamond MOS structure is derived, which is composed of two parallel capacitive and resistance pairs, in series connection with both resistance and inductance. The two capacitive components are resulted from the insulator, the hydrogenated-diamond surface, and their interface. The physical parameters such as the insulator capacitance are obtained, circumventing the series resistance and inductance effect. By comparing the IS and capacitance-voltage measurements, the frequency dispersion of the capacitance-voltage characteristic is discussed.

The femtosecond laser modification of refractive index in amorphous Al2O3:Nd thin film prepared by rf magnetron sputtering is investigated. Modifications of the refractive index in a sample with a single Al2O3:Nd layer and in a sample composed of the Al2O3:Nd layer and SiO2 layer on the top were compared. Advantages arising from addition of the SiO2 layer are shown. The film was patterned in order to form an active waveguide. Waveguide loss and mode composition were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Spectrum and kinetics of luminescence in the region of 1.06 μm were measured.

Five samples including a composite refuse derived fuel (RDF) and four combustible components of municipal solid wastes (MSW) have been reacted under supercritical water conditions in a batch reactor. The reactions have been carried out at 450 °C for 60 min reaction time, with or without 20 wt% RuO2/gamma-alumina catalyst. The reactivities of the samples depended on their compositions; with the plastic-rich samples, RDF and mixed waste plastics (MWP), giving similar product yields and compositions, while the biogenic samples including mixed waste wood (MWW) and textile waste (TXT) also gave similar reaction products. The use of the heterogeneous ruthenium-based catalyst gave carbon gasification efficiencies (CGE) of up to 99 wt%, which was up by at least 83% compared to the non-catalytic tests. In the presence of RuO2 catalyst, methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide became the dominant gas products for all five samples. The higher heating values (HHV) of the gas products increased at least two-fold in the presence of the catalyst compared to non-catalytic tests. Results show that the ruthenium-based catalyst was active in feedstock steam reforming, methanation and possible direct hydrogenolysis of C-C bonds. This work provides new insights into the catalytic mechanisms of RuO2 during SCWG of carbonaceous materials, along with the possibility of producing high yields of methane from MSW fractions.

Drastic improvements in styrene yield and selectivity were achieved in the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene by staged feeding of O2. Six isothermal packed bed reactors were used in series with intermediate feeding of O2, while all EB was fed to the first reactor, diluted with helium or CO2 (1:5 molar ratio), resulting in total O2:EB molar feed ratios of 0.2-0.6. The two catalyst samples, γ-Al 2O3 and 5P/SiO2, that were applied both benefitted from this operation mode. The ethylbenzene conversion per stage and the selectivity to styrene were significantly improved. The production of COX was effectively reduced, while the selectivity to other side products remained unchanged. Compared with co-feeding at a total O 2:EB molar feed ratio of 0.6, by staged feeding the EB conversion (+15% points for both catalysts), ST selectivity (+4% points for both samples) and O2 (ST) selectivity (+9% points for γ-Al2O 3 and +17% points for 5P/SiO2) all improved. The ethylbenzene conversion over 5P/SiO2 can be increased from 18% to 70% by increasing the number of reactors from 1 to 6 with each reactor a total amount of O2 of 0.1 without the loss of ST selectivity (93%). For 5P/SiO2 a higher temperature (500 C vs. 450 C for Al 2O3) is required. Essentially more catalyst (5P/SiO 2) was required to achieve full O2 conversion in each reactor. Staged feeding of O2 does not eliminate the existing issues of the catalyst stability both in time-on stream and as a function of the number of catalyst regenerations (5P/SiO2), or the relatively moderate performance (relatively low styrene selectivity for γ-Al2O 3). © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Surface modification by means of nanostructures is of interest to enhance boiling heat transfer in various applications including the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). With the goal of obtaining rough and dense aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanofilms, the optimal combination of process parameters for electrophoretic deposition (EPD) based on the uniform design (UD) method is explored in this paper. The detailed procedures for the EPD process and UD method are presented. Four main influencing conditions controlling the EPD process were identified as nanofluid concentration, deposition time, applied voltage and suspension pH. A series of tests were carried out based on the UD experimental design. A regression model and statistical analysis were applied to the results. Sensitivity analyses of the effect of the four main parameters on the roughness and deposited mass of Al2O3 films were also carried out. The results showed that Al2O3 nanofilms were deposited compactly and uniformly on the substrate. Within the range of the experiments, the preferred combination of process parameters was determined to be nanofluid concentration of 2 wt.%, deposition time of 15 min, applied voltage of 23 V and suspension pH of 3, yielding roughness and deposited mass of 520.9 nm and 161.6 × 10− 4 g/cm2, respectively. A verification experiment was carried out at these conditions and gave values of roughness and deposited mass within 8% error of the expected ones as determined from the UD approach. It is concluded that uniform design is useful for the optimization of electrophoretic deposition requiring only 7 tests compared to 49 using the orthogonal design method.
