The objective of this research was to investigate the oxidation of organic compounds in molten alkali metal hydroxides containing manganates. It has been shown that controlled oxidation can be readily achieved with high specificity to give products in high yield with very short reaction times. The concurrent changes in the melt were monitored using a vibrating platinum indicator electrode with a quazi-reference electrode which was successfully developed for use in molten (Na-K)OH eutectic at 523K. Henry's Law constants for water in the molten eutectic system (Na-K)OH have been measured and used to calculate the water concentration in the melt. The electrochemistry of manganates in molten (Na-K)OH eutectic at 523K has been studied using the vibrating platinum electrode, and the existence of the species Mn(II), Mn(II!), Mn(IV), Mn(V) and Mn(VI) in such melts has been investigated at various water concentrations. The half-wave potentials of the voltammetric waves were measured versus the cathodic limit of the melt. The stability of Mn(V) or Mn(VI) in the melt was achieved by varying the water concentration. A range of organic chemicals has been passed through molten (Na-K)OH at 523K and the reactions of these chemicals with the melt have been studied. The same organics were then passed through molten (Na-K)OH containing stabilized Mn(V) or Mn{VI) without violent reaction. Methanol, allyl alcohol, propane 1, 2 diol, I-heptene and acetone were oxidized by Mn(V) and Mn(VI). Ethanol was only oxidized by Mn(VI), isopropanol and benzyl alcohol were only oxidized by Mn(V). Npropanol, butanol, 2 methyl propan-2-ol, n-hexane, n-heptane toluene and cyclohexane were unchanged by both Mn(V) and Mn(VI). Detailed experiments have been performed on the reactions of ethanol, iso-propanol and methanol in molten (Na-K)OH containing stabilized Mrt(V) or Mn(VI), and reaction mechanisms have been postulated. Ethanol and iso-propanol were oxidized to acetaldehyde and acetone respectively with a potential for useful chemical process. The oxidation of methanol could be developed as a basis for an industrial methanol disposal process.

The 10th anniversary of the workshop Models@run.time was held at the 18th International Conference on Model Driven Engineering Languages and Systems. The workshop took place in the city of Ottawa, Canada, on the 29th of September 2015. The workshop was organized by Sebastian Gtz, Nelly Bencomo, Gordon Blair and Hui Song. Here, we present a summary of the discussions at the workshop and a synopsis of the topics discussed and highlighted during the workshop. The workshop received the award for the best workshop at the MODELS 2015 conference out of 18 workshops in total. The award was based upon the organization, program, web site timing and the feedback provided by the workshop participants.

Pervasive environments are characterised by highly heterogeneous services and mobile devices with dynamic availability. Approaches such as that proposed by the Connect project provide means to enable such systems to be discovered and composed, through mediation where necessary. As services appear and disappear, the set of feasible compositions changes. In such a pervasive environment, a designer encounters two related challenges: what goals it is reasonable to pursue in the current context and how to use the services presently available to achieve his goals. This paper proposes an approach to design service compositions, facilitating an interactive process to find the trade-off between the possible and the desirable. Following our approach, the system finds at runtime, where possible, compositions related to the developer's requirements. This process can realise the intent the developer specifies at design time, taking into account the services available at runtime, without a prohibitive level of pre-specification, inappropriate for such dynamic environments. © 2012 ACM.

The Models@run.time (MRT) workshop series offers a discussion forum for the rising need to leverage modeling techniques for the software of the future. The main goals are to explore the benefits of models@run.time and to foster collaboration and cross-fertilization between different research communities like for example like model-driven engineering (e.g. MODELS), self-adaptive/autonomous systems communities (e.g., SEAMS and ICAC), the control theory community and the artificial intelligence community. © 2012 Authors.

The Models@run.time workshop (MRT) series offers a discussion forum for the rising need to leverage modeling techniques at runtime for the software of the future. MRT has become a mature research topic, which is, e.g., reflected in separate sessions at conferences covering MRT approaches only. The target venues of the workshops audience changed from workshops to conferences. Hence, new topics in the area of MRT need to be identified, which are not yet mature enough for conferences. In consequence, the main goal of this edition was to reflect on the past decade of the workshop's history and to identify new future directions for the workshop.
