This paper looks at the notion of scale through the negative polarity and free-choice interpretations of arbitrary-selection expressions such as any. These interpretations rest on a scalar model, which explains why they often get associated with the same item cross-linguistically. A scalar model does not seem to emerge readily in the problematic imperatives of the type Pick any card, where the arbitrary selection item differs from its other uses by its existential value and absence of qualitative dimensions. These differences come from a choice over non-distinguishable entities left to the interlocutor. Yet, since this choice is exerted against the whole set of contextual entities, a scalar model seems to stand, for this and other problematic imperative uses.

Mucohalogen acids have been used for the preparation of a variety of 3,4-clihalogenated 2(5H)-furanones. In one synthetic step the carbarnates 2a-c and the pseudoanhydrides 4a-e were prepared using isocyanates and acid anhydrides. A series of 5-alkoxylated 3,4-dichloro-2(5H)-furanones 5a-o have been synthesized with a wide range of lipophilicity, using the hydroxy-form of mucohalogen acids 1a and 1b. The 5-allyl-3,4-dichloro-2(5H)-furanone 5f was derived into the dihydro-isoxazol 6 and the oxirane 7. The methyl ester 5a was converted with ammonia into the tetramic acid chloride 11. The pseudo acid chloride 3 was reacted further into the bis aziricline 8. Reduction of the mucochloric acid 1a furnished the trichlorofuranone 3. The cytotoxicity of these simple and bis-cyclic butenolides have been evaluated in tissue culture on MAC13 and MAC16 cancer cell lines using the MTT cytotoxicity assay. The ester 5g, the acetate 4b and the carbamate 2b displayed a cytotoxicity in the low micromolar range. Further, an IC50 (50% inhibitory concentration) of 50 nM and 30 nm was determined forthe epoxide 7 and the aziridine 18. © 2004 The Authors Recieved.

A method for inscribing fiber bragg gratings (FBG) using direct, point-by-point writing by an infrared femtosecond laser was described. The method requires neither phase-masks nor photosensitized fibers and hence offers remarkable technology flexibility. It requires a very short inscription time of less than 60 s per grating. Gratings of first to third order were produced in non-photosensitized, standard telecommunication fiber (SMF) and dispersion shifted fiber (DSF). The gratings produced in this method showed low insertion loss, narrow linewidth and strong, fundamental or high-order resonance.

Multidrug resistance protein MRP1 mediates the ATP-dependent efflux of many chemotherapeutic agents and organic anions. MRP1 has two nucleotide binding sites (NBSs) and three membrane spanning domains (MSDs) containing 17 transmembrane helices linked by extracellular and cytoplasmic loops (CL). Homology models suggest that CL7 (amino acids 1141-1195) is in a position where it could participate in signaling between the MSDs and NBSs during the transport process. We have individually replaced eight charged residues in CL7 with Ala, and in some cases, an amino acid with the same charge, and then investigated the effects on MRP1 expression, transport activity, and nucleotide and substrate interactions. A triple mutant in which Glu(1169), Glu(1170), and Glu(1172) were all replaced with Ala was also examined. The properties of R1173A and E1184A were comparable with those of wild-type MRP1, whereas the remaining mutants were either poorly expressed (R1166A, D1183A) or exhibited reduced transport of one or more organic anions (E1144A, D1179A, K1181A, (1169)AAQA). Same charge mutant D1183E was also not expressed, whereas expression and activity of R1166K were similar to wild-type MRP1. The moderate substrate-selective changes in transport activity displayed by mutants E1144A, D1179A, K1181A, and (1169)AAQA were accompanied by changes in orthovanadate-induced trapping of [alpha-(32)P]azidoADP by NBS2 indicating changes in ATP hydrolysis or release of ADP. In the case of E1144A, estradiol glucuronide no longer inhibited trapping of azidoADP. Together, our results demonstrate the extreme sensitivity of CL7 to mutation, consistent with its critical and complex dual role in both the proper folding and transport activity of MRP1.

This work revealed that the solid solution compounds of Sr 2-xBaxNb2O7 are promising lead-free materials for high-temperature piezoelectric sensor application. These compounds were confirmed as ferroelectric materials with high Curie points (> 900°C) by their piezoelectric activity after poling, ferroelectric domain switching in their P-E hysteresis loops and thermal depoling behavior. The effect of Ba substitution on the structure and properties of Sr 2-xBaxNb2O7 (x < 1.0) was investigated. The solid solution limit of Sr2-xBaxNb 2O7 was determined by XRD as x < 0.6. The a-, b-, c- axes, and cell volume increase with Ba addition. The textured ceramics of Sr2-xBaxNb2O7 were prepared for the first time. The highest d33 was measured as 3.6 ± 0.1 pC/N for Sr1.8Ba0.2Nb2O7. © 2012 The American Ceramic Society.

Interaction of macrophages with apoptotic cells involves multiple steps including recognition, tethering, phagocytosis, and anti-inflammatory macrophage responses. Defective apoptotic cell clearance is associated with pathogenesis of autoimmune disease. CD14 is a surface receptor that functions in vitro in the removal of apoptotic cells by human and murine macrophages, but its mechanism of action has not been defined. Here, we demonstrate that CD14 functions as a macrophage tethering receptor for apoptotic cells.Significantly, CD14-/- macrophages in vivo are defective in clearing apoptotic cells in multiple tissues, suggesting a broad role for CD14 in the clearance process. However, the resultant persistence of apoptotic cells does not lead to inflammation or increased autoantibody production, most likely because, as we show, CD14-/- macrophages retain the ability to generate anti-inflammatory signals in response to apoptotic cells. We conclude that CD14 plays a broad tethering role in apoptotic cell clearance in vivo and that apoptotic cells can persist in the absence of proinflammatory consequences.

Polycystic ovary syndrome affects 6 percent of women. Symptoms include hirsutism, acne, and infertility. This research explores the impact of polycystic ovary syndrome on women's lives using photovoice. Nine participants photographed objects related to their quality of life and made diary entries explaining each photograph. Three themes emerged from thematic analysis of the diaries: control (of symptoms and polycystic ovary syndrome controlling their lives), perception (of self, others, and their situation), and support (from relationships, health care systems, and education). These findings illuminate positive aspects of living with polycystic ovary syndrome and the role pets and social networking sites play in providing support for women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

In this paper, we first present a simple but effective L1-norm-based two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA). Traditional L2-norm-based least squares criterion is sensitive to outliers, while the newly proposed L1-norm 2DPCA is robust. Experimental results demonstrate its advantages. © 2006 IEEE.
