Interaction of liquid copper with sintered iron is important in brazing, liquid phase sintering and infiltration. In brazing, the penetration of liquid copper into the pores is to be `avoided', whereas in infiltration processes it is `encouraged', and in liquid phase sintering it should be `controlled' so that optimum mechanical properties are achieved. The main objective of the research is to model the interaction by studying the effect of the process variables on the mechanisms of copper interaction in Fe-Cu and Fe-Cu-C systems. This involves both theoretical and experimental considerations. Dilatometric investigations at 950, 1125 and 1200oC, together with metallographic analyses were carried out to clarify the copper growth phenomenon. It is shown that penetration of liquid copper into the iron grain boundaries is the major cause of dimensional changes. Infiltration profiles revealed that copper penetration between the iron interparticle contact points and along iron grain boundaries is a rapid process. The extent of copper penetration depends on the dihedral angle. Large dihedral angles hinder, and small angles promote copper penetration into the grain boundaries. Dihedral angle analysis shows that the addition of 0.6wt.% graphite reduces the number of zero dihedral angle from 27 to 3o and increases the mean dihedral angle from 9.8 to 41.5o. The dihedral angle was lowest at 1125oC and then increased to higher values as the system approached its equilibrium condition. Elementally mixed (E.M.) Fe-Cu compacts showed a rapid expansion at the copper melting point. However, graphite additions reduced compact growth by increasing the mean dihedral angle. In order to reduce the copper growth phenomenon, iron powder was coated with a thin layer of copper by an immersion coating (I.C.) technique. The dilatometric curves revealed an overall shrinkage in the I.C. compacts compared to their corresponding E.M. compacts. Multiple regression models showed that temperature had the most effect on dimensional changes and density had the most contributing effect upon the copper penetration area in the infiltrated powder metallurgy compacts.

We investigate the use of nonlinear optical loop mirrors as saturable absorbers in picosecond soliton transmission systems. It is found that they allow short (1–5-ps) pulses to be propagated through chains of optical amplifiers spaced at intervals of typically 10 km. The loop mirror removes dispersive waves and stabilizes the peak amplitude of the soliton. An additional advantage is that the self-frequency shift of the soliton may be suppressed by bandwidth filtering without causing growth of dispersive waves at the center of the passband. The timing jitter and soliton interactions present in the scheme are also described.

Foley [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 11 (1994) 1710] has proposed an influential psychophysical model of masking in which mask components in a contrast gain pool are raised to an exponent before summation and divisive inhibition. We tested this summation rule in experiments in which contrast detection thresholds were measured for a vertical 1 c/deg (or 2 c/deg) sine-wave component in the presence of a 3 c/deg (or 6 c/deg) mask that had either a single component oriented at -45° or a pair of components oriented at ±45°. Contrary to the predictions of Foley's model 3, we found that for masks of moderate contrast and above, threshold elevation was predicted by linear summation of the mask components in the inhibitory stage of the contrast gain pool. We built this feature into two new models, referred to as the early adaptation model and the hybrid model. In the early adaptation model, contrast adaptation controls a threshold-like nonlinearity on the output of otherwise linear pathways that provide the excitatory and inhibitory inputs to a gain control stage. The hybrid model involves nonlinear and nonadaptable routes to excitatory and inhibitory stages as well as an adaptable linear route. With only six free parameters, both models provide excellent fits to the masking and adaptation data of Foley and Chen [Vision Res. 37 (1997) 2779] but unlike Foley and Chen's model, are able to do so with only one adaptation parameter. However, only the hybrid model is able to capture the features of Foley's (1994) pedestal plus orthogonal fixed mask data. We conclude that (1) linear summation of inhibitory components is a feature of contrast masking, and (2) that the main aftereffect of spatial adaptation on contrast increment thresholds can be assigned to a single site. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The issues involved in employing nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) as intensity filters in picosecond soliton transmission were examined in detail. It was shown that inserting NOLMs into a periodically amplified transmission line allowed picosecond solitons to be transmitted under conditions considered infeasible until now. The loop mirrors gave dual function, removing low-power background dispersive waves through saturable absorption and applying a negative feedback mechanism to control the amplitude of the solitons. The stochastic characteristics of the pulses that were due to amplifier spontaneous-emission noise were investigated, and a number of new properties were determined. In addition, the mutual interaction between pulses was also significantly different from that observed for longer-duration solitons. The impact of Raman scattering in the computations was included and it was shown that soliton self-frequency shifts may be eliminated by appropriate bandwidth restrictions.

We describe the use of arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) in the interrogation of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) for dynamic strain measurement. The ratiometric AWG output was calibrated in a static deflection experiment over a ±200 με range. Dynamic strain measurement was demonstrated with a FBG in a conventional single-mode fiber mounted on the surface of a vibrating cantilever and on a piezoelectric actuator, giving a resolution of 0.5 με at 2.4 kHz. We present results of this technique extended to measure the dynamic differential strain between two FBG pairs within a multicore fiber. An arbitrary cantilever oscillation of the multicore fiber was determined from curvature measurements in two orthogonal axes at 1125 Hz with a resolution of 0.05 m-1. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
