The tail-free operation of an overdriven gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser by spectral filtering was demonstrated. The filtering was realized using a mechanically tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The unfiltered and filtered signals were traced by corresponding oscilloscope. The spectral filtering removed the nonlinearly chirped components resulting in the pulse shortening. The results showed unwanted relaxation in the overdriven DFB laser were supressed by using a steep-edge notch filter.

Supercontinuum generation in a TrueWave and SMF fibre based ultra-long Raman fibre laser cavity is investigated experimentally. By including SMF in the ultra-long Raman cavity, bandwidth and flatness can be dramatically improved.

We demonstrate that the use of in-line nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) in dispersion-managed (DM) transmission systems dominated by amplitude noise can achieve passive 2R regeneration of a 40 and 80 Gbit/s RZ data stream. This is an indication that the use of this approach could obviate the need for full-regeneration in high data rate, strong DM systems, when intra-channel four-wave mixing poses serious problems.

Self-seeded, gain-switched operation of an InGaN multi-quantum-well diode laser is reported for the first time. Narrow-line, wavelength-tunable, picosecond pulses have been generated from a standard, uncoated diode laser in an external cavity.

This study discusses the fabrication and implementation of chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) as optical wear sensors. Such a sensor has potential applications in monitoring grinding and milling machines through a safety device to check the wear on a car brake. The CFBG wear sensor has advantages over existing wear sensing techniques as it does not require electrical current to be passed through the sensor itself. This makes it eligible for application in combustible environments such as in the oil and gas industry.

We present a technique for suppressing cladding-mode coupling loss in fiber Bragg grating fabrication. Suppression of cladding-modes down to 0.2 dB in a Bragg grating of 18dB reflectivity has been achieved in hydrogen-loaded standard single-mode fiber.

We describe some recently developed fibre grating sensing devices (Bragg and long-period types) and applications with emphasis on simultaneous measurement of multiple measurands using combinational grating structures, and the realisation of ultra-high sensitivity sensors utilising the quadratic dispersion of long-period grating structure.
