The room temperature ionic liquid [bmim]PF6 is a new green solvent for the N-alkylation of 2,4-thiazolidinones. Significant rate enhancement and improved yields have been observed.

Phthalic anhydride reacts rapidly with Aromatic and aliphatic amines in ionic liquid [Bmim][PF6] or [Bmim][BF4] at 130 °C to give N-aryl and N-alkylphthalimides in excellent yields.

1-(alpha-Alkoxyalkyl)benzotriazoles are readily synthesized from three-component condensation of benzotriazole with aldehyde and alcohol in ionic liquid [Bmim]PF6.

In ionic liquids [Bmim][PF6] or [Bmim][BF4], pyrrole replaced the halogen atom of an alkyl halide to give the corresponding N-substituted pyrrole in excellent yield. Benzenesulfonyl chloride, p-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride and benzoyl chloride reacted similarly with pyrroles to afford the N-substituted pyrroles in quantitative yield. Michael addition reaction of pyrrole with electrophilic olefins was completed in a highly regioselective manner to afford the N-alkylpyrroles.

In the ionic liquids [Bmim][PF6] or [Bmim][BF4], a series of succinimide, maleimide and phthalimide derivatives were synthesized from corresponding anhydrides with a variety of primary amines in excellent yield.

N-Alkylation of heterocyclic compounds bearing an acidic hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen with alkyl halides is accomplished in ionic liquids ([bmim]BF4 = 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [bmim]PF6 = 1-butyl-3-methylimida-zolium hexafluorophosphate, [buPy]BF4 = butylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate) in the presence of potassium hydroxide as a base. In this manner, phthalimide, indole, benzimidazole, succinimide can be successfully alkylated. The procedure is convenient, efficient, and generally affords the N-alkylated product exclusively.

A rapid one-pot synthesis of 3-alkyl-5-[(Z)-arylmethylidene]-1,3-thiazolidine-2,4-dionesis described that occurs in recyclable ionic liquid [bmim]PF6 (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate).Significant rate enhancement and good selectivity have been observed.

The moisture and air stable ionic liquids 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium tetrafluoroborate [bmim]BF4 and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazonium hexafluorophosphate [bmim]PF6 were used as ‘green' recyclable alternatives to volatile organic solvents (VOCs) for ethylenediammonium diacetate (EDDA) catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation between aldehydes or ketones with active methylene compounds. Both aldehydes and ketones gave satisfactory results. The ionic liquids containing catalyst EDDA were recycled several times with no decreases in yields and reaction rates. In the case of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, the reactions led to the formation of 3-substituted coumarins under standard reaction conditions.

[μ-Tris(1,4-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)butane-N4,N4‘)iron(II)] bis(hexafluorophosphate), [Fe(btzb)3](PF6)2, crystallizes in a three-dimensional 3-fold interlocked structure featuring a sharp two-step spin-crossover behavior. The spin conversion takes place between 164 and 182 K showing a discontinuity at about T1/2 = 174 K and a hysteresis of about 4 K between T1/2 and the low-spin state. The spin transition has been independently followed by magnetic susceptibility measurements, 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy, and variable temperature far and midrange FTIR spectroscopy. The title compound crystallizes in the trigonal space group P30¯(No. 147) with a unit cell content of one formula unit plus a small amount of disordered solvent. The lattice parameters were determined by X-ray diffraction at several temperatures between 100 and 300 K. Complete crystal structures were resolved for 9 of these temperatures between 100 (only low spin, LS) and 300 K (only high spin, HS), Z = 1 [Fe(btzb)3](PF 6)2: 300 K (HS), a = 11.258(6) Å, c = 8.948(6) Å, V = 982.2(10) Å3; 100 K (LS), a = 10.989(3) Å, c = 8.702(2) Å, V = 910.1(4) Å3. The molecular structure consists of octahedral coordinated iron(II) centers bridged by six N4,N4‘ coordinating bis(tetrazole) ligands to form three 3-dimensional networks. Each of these three networks is symmetry related and interpenetrates each other within a unit cell to form the interlocked structure. The Fe−N bond lengths change between 1.993(1) Å at 100 K in the LS state and 2.193(2) Å at 300 K in the HS state. The nearest Fe separation is along the c-axis and identical with the lattice parameter c.

Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP, OMIM#308300) is a rare X-linked genomic disorder (about 1,400 cases) that affects the neuroectodermal tissue and Central Nervous System (CNS). The objective of this study was to describe the cognitive-behavioural profile in children in order to plan a clinical intervention to improve their quality of life. A total of 14 girls (age range: from 1 year and 2 months to 12 years and 10 months) with IP and the IKBKG/NEMO gene deletion were submitted to a cognitive assessment including intelligence scales, language and visuo-spatial competence tests, learning ability tests, and a behavioural assessment. Five girls had severe to mild intellectual deficiencies and the remaining nine had a normal neurodevelopment. Four girls were of school age and two of these showed no intellectual disability, but had specific disabilities in calculation and arithmetic reasoning. This is the first description of the cognitive-behavioural profile in relation to developmental age. We stress the importance of an early assessment of learning abilities in individuals with IP without intellectual deficiencies to prevent the onset of any such deficit.
