The technique of remote sensing provides a unique view of the earth's surface and considerable areas can be surveyed in a short amount of time. The aim of this project was to evaluate whether remote sensing, particularly using the Airborne Thematic Mapper (ATM) with its wide spectral range, was capable of monitoring landfill sites within an urban environment with the aid of image processing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) methods. The regions under study were in the West Midlands conurbation and consisted of a large area in what is locally known as the Black Country containing heavy industry intermingled with residential areas, and a large single active landfill in north Birmingham. When waste is collected in large volumes it decays and gives off pollutants. These pollutants, landfill gas and leachate (a liquid effluent), are known to be injurious to vegetation and can cause stress and death. Vegetation under stress can exhibit a physiological change, detectable by the remote sensing systems used. The chemical and biological reactions that create the pollutants are exothermic and the gas and leachate, if they leave the waste, can be warmer than their surroundings. Thermal imagery from the ATM (daylight and dawn) and thermal video were obtained and used to find thermal anomalies on the area under study. The results showed that vegetation stress is not a reliable indicator of landfill gas migration, as sites within an urban environment have a cover too complex for the effects to be identified. Gas emissions from two sites were successfully detected by all the thermal imagery with the thermal ATM being the best. Although the results were somewhat disappointing, recent technical advancements in the remote sensing systems used in this project would allow geo-registration of ATM imagery taken on different occasions and the elimination of the effects of solar insolation.

The aims of this study were to examine the binding characteristics of the rat CGRP receptor and to further the classification of CGRP and amylin receptors in guinea-pig tissue preparations. Binding characteristics of CGRP were investigated on rat splenic, cerebellar and liver membrane preparations. Human-α-CGRP, rat-α-CGRP and the CGRP receptor analogues Tyrº -CGRPC28-37) and [Cys (ACM)2,7 ]-human CGRP and the CGRP receptor antagonist CGRPC8-37) were utilised in competitive radioligand binding experiments to identify possible CGRP receptor subtypes in these tissues. There appeared to be no significant differences between the rat CGRP receptors examined. A panel of monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) raised against CGRP were employed to investigate the structure-activity relationships of CGRP and its receptor. No differences between the tissue receptors were observed using this panel of Mabs. The effects of human-α, human-β, rat-α-CGRP, human and rat amylin and adrenomedullin(13-52) were examined on the spontaneously beating right atria and on electrically evoked twitch contractions of isolated guinea-pig ileum, vas deferens and left atria. All of the peptides caused concentration-dependent inhibition of twitch amplitude in the ileum and vas deferens. CGRP produced positive inotropic effects in the right and left atria and positive chronotropic effects in the right atria. A variety of CGRP receptor antagonists and putative amylin receptor antagonists were used to antagonise these effects. CGRP(8-37) is currently used as a basis for CGRP receptor classification (Dennis, et al., 1989). Based upon results obtained using CGRP(8-37) it has been shown that the guinea-pig ileum contains mainly CGRP 1 receptors and the vas deferens contain CGRP2 receptors. Amylin was shown to act at receptors distinct from those for CGRP and it is postulated that amylin has its own receptors in these preparations. Experiments using CGRP (19-37) and Tyrº -CGRP(28-37) indicate that human and rat CGRP act at distinct receptors in guinea-pig ileum and vas deferens. The amylin receptor antagonist amylin(8-37) and the putative antagonist AC187 provide evidence to suggest human and rat amylin also act at receptors able to distinguish between the two types of amylin.

The principal work reported in this thesis is the examination of autonomic profile of ciliary muscle innervation as a risk factor in myopia development. Deficiency in sympathetic inhibitory control of accommodation has been proposed as a contributory factor in the development of late onset myopia (LOM). Complementary measurements of ocular biometry, oculomotor function and dynamic accommodation response were carried out on the same subject cohort, thus allowing cross-correlation of these factors with. autonomic profile. Subjects were undergraduate and postgraduate students of Aston University. A 2.5 year longitudinal study of refractive error progression in 40 subjects revealed the onset of LOM in 10, initially emmetropic, young adult subjects (age range 18-24 years) undertaking substantial amounts of near work. A controlled, double blind experimental protocol was conducted concurrently to measure post-task open-loop accommodative regression following distance (0 D) or near (3 D above baseline tonic accommodation) closed-loop tasks of short (10 second) or long (3 minute) duration. Closed-loop tasks consisted of observation of a high contrast Maltese cross target; open-loop conditions were imposed by observation of a 0.2 c/deg Difference of Gaussian target. Accommodation responses were recorded continuously at 42 Hz using a modified Shin-Nippon SRW-5000 open-view infra-red optometer. Blockade of the sympathetic branch of accommodative control was achieved by topical instillation of the non-selective b-adrenoceptor antagonist timolol maleate. Betaxolol hydrochloride (non-selective b1-adrenoceptor antagonist) and normal saline were employed as control agents. Retarded open-loop accommodative regression under b2 blockade following the 3 minute near task indicated the presence of sympathetic facility. Sympathetic inhibitory facility in accommodation control was found in similar proportions between LOM and stable emmetropic subjects. A cross-sectional study (N=60) of autonomic profile showed that sympathetic innervation of ciliary muscle is present in similar proportions between emmetropes, early-, and late-onset myopes. Sympathetic facility was identified in 27% of emmetropes, 21% of EOMs and 29% of LOMs.

An all-optical regenerative memory device using a single loop mirror and a semiconductor optical amplifier is experimentally demonstrated. This configuration has potential for a low power all-optical stable memory device with non-inverting characteristics where packets are stored by continuously injecting the regenerated data back into the loop.

This paper explores the relationship between self-reported innovative characteristics and dysfunctional personality traits. Participants (N = 207) from a range of occupations completed the Innovation Potential Indicator (IPI) and the Hogan Development Survey (HDS). Those who reported innovative characteristics also reported the following dysfunctional traits: Arrogant, Manipulative, Dramatic, Eccentric; and lower levels of Cautious, Perfectionist and Dependent. A representative approximation of the higher order factor “moving against people” (Hogan & Hogan, 1997) was positively associated with innovative characteristics. It is concluded that innovation potential may be viewed as a positive effect of some otherwise dysfunctional traits, most notably those encompassed under the second-order HDS factor ‘moving against people’.

In this chapter we present the relevant mathematical background to address two well defined signal and image processing problems. Namely, the problem of structured noise filtering and the problem of interpolation of missing data. The former is addressed by recourse to oblique projection based techniques whilst the latter, which can be considered equivalent to impulsive noise filtering, is tackled by appropriate interpolation methods.

Meta-analysis was used to quantify how well the Theories of Reasoned Action and Planned Behaviour have predicted intentions to attend screening programmes and actual attendance behaviour. Systematic literature searches identified 33 studies that were included in the review. Across the studies as a whole, attitudes had a large-sized relationship with intention, while subjective norms and perceived behavioural control (PBC) possessed medium-sized relationships with intention. Intention had a medium-sized relationship with attendance, whereas the PBC-attendance relationship was small sized. Due to heterogeneity in results between studies, moderator analyses were conducted. The moderator variables were (a) type of screening test, (b) location of recruitment, (c) screening cost and (d) invitation to screen. All moderators affected theory of planned behaviour relationships. Suggestions for future research emerging from these results include targeting attitudes to promote intention to screen, a greater use of implementation intentions in screening information and examining the credibility of different screening providers.
