We demonstrate erbium- and thulium-doped fibre ring lasers mode-locked with a single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) operating at normal intracavity dispersion and high nonlinearity. The lasers generate transform-limited picosecond inversed-modified soliton pulses. © 2014 OSA.

We propose a fibre-based approach for generation of optical frequency combs (OFCs) with the aim of calibration of astronomical spectrographs in the low and medium-resolution range. This approach includes two steps: in the first step, an appropriate state of optical pulses is generated and subsequently moulded in the second step delivering the desired OFC. More precisely, the first step is realised by injection of two continuous-wave (CW) lasers into a conventional single-mode fibre, whereas the second step generates a broad OFC by using the optical solitons generated in step one as initial condition. We investigate the conversion of a bichromatic input wave produced by two initial CW lasers into a train of optical solitons, which happens in the fibre used as step one. Especially, we are interested in the soliton content of the pulses created in this fibre. For that, we study different initial conditions (a single cosine-hump, an Akhmediev breather, and a deeply modulated bichromatic wave) by means of soliton radiation beat analysis and compare the results to draw conclusion about the soliton content of the state generated in the first step. In case of a deeply modulated bichromatic wave, we observed the formation of a collective soliton crystal for low input powers and the appearance of separated solitons for high input powers. An intermediate state showing the features of both, the soliton crystal and the separated solitons, turned out to be most suitable for the generation of OFC for the purpose of calibration of astronomical spectrographs.

Applying high-speed polarimetery we experimentally demonstrate new types of vector solitons for multipulse operation in an erbium doped carbon nanotube mode-locked laser. The observed states of polarisation reveal either fast pulse-to-pulse polarisation switching between crosspolarised modes or slow cyclic evolution.

An erbium doped fiber ring laser achieving soliton mode locking by the use of an intra-cavity all-fiber polarization interference filter (AFPIF) has been demonstrated. To incorporate an AFPIF with relative narrow transmission bandwidth, the laser has produced clean soliton pulses of 1.2 ps duration at a repetition rate of 14.98 MHz with a polarization extinction ratio up to 25.7 dB. Moreover, we have demonstrated that the operating wavelength of the mode locking laser can be tuned over 20 nm range from 1545 to 1565 nm by thermally tuning the AFPIF cavity. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We have proposed and demonstrated passive harmonic mode locking of an erbium doped fiber laser with soliton pulse shaping using carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol film. Two types of samples prepared by using filtration and centrifugation were studied. The demonstrated fiber laser can support 10th harmonic order corresponding to 245 MHz repetition rate with an output power of ~12 mW. More importantly, all stable harmonic orders show timing jitter below 10 ps. The output pulses energies are between 25 to 56 pJ. Both samples result in the same central wavelength of output optical spectrum with similar pulse duration of ~1 ps for all harmonic orders. By using the same laser configuration, centrifugated sample exhibits slightly lower pulse chirp. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

A closed-form expression for a lower bound on the per soliton capacity of the nonlinear optical fibre channel in the presence of (optical) amplifier spontaneous emission (ASE) noise is derived. This bound is based on a non-Gaussian conditional probability density function for the soliton amplitude jitter induced by the ASE noise and is proven to grow logarithmically as the signal-to-noise ratio increases.

A thulium-doped all-fiber laser passively mode-locked by the co-action of nonlinear polarization evolution and single-walled carbon nanotubes operating at 1860-1980 nm wavelength band is demonstrated. Pumped with the single-mode laser diode at 1.55 μm laser generates near 500-fs soliton pulses at repetition rate ranging from 6.3 to 72.5 MHz in single-pulse operation regime. Having 3-m long cavity average output power reached 300 mW, giving the peak power of 4.88 kW and the pulse energy of 2.93 nJ with slope efficiency higher than 30%. At a 21.6-m long ring cavity average output power of 117 mW is obtained, corresponding to the pulse energy up to 10.87 nJ and a pulse peak power of 21.7 kW, leading to the higher-order soliton generation.

In the framework of 1D Nonlinear Shrödinger Equation (NSE) we demonstrate how one can control the refractive angle of a fundamental soliton beam passing through an optical lattice, by adjusting either the shape of an individual waveguide or the relative positions of waveguides. Even for a single scatterer its shape has a nontrivial effect on the refraction direction. In the case of shallow modulation we provide an analytical description based of the effect on the soliton perturbation theory. When one considers a lattice of scatterers, there emanates an additional form factor in the radiation density (RD) of emitted waves referring to the wave-soliton beating and interference inside the lattice. We concentrate on the results for two cases: periodic lattice and disordered lattice of scattering shapes. © 2011 IEEE.

We study the dynamical properties of the RZ-DPSK encoded sequences of bits, focusing on the instabilities in the train leading to the bit stream corruption. The problem is studied within the framework of the complex Toda chain model for optical solitons. We show how the bit composition of the pattern affects the initial stage of the train dynamics and explain the general mechanisms of the appearance of unstable collective soliton modes. Then we discuss the nonlinear regime using the asymptotic properties of the pulse stream at large propagation distances and analyze the dynamical behavior of the train elucidating different scenarios for the pattern instabilities. ©2010 Crown.

We have investigated the mode-lock operation from a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gain chip in the ring fibre configuration. At lower pump currents, the laser generates dark soliton pulses both at the fundamental repetition rate of 39 MHz and supports up to the 6th harmonic order corresponding to 234-MHz repetition rate with an output power of ∼2.1 mW. At higher pump currents, the laser can be switched between the bright, dark and concurrent bright and dark soliton generation regimes.

We study the dynamical properties of the RZ-DPSK encoded sequences, focusing on the instabilities in the soliton train leading to the distortions of the information transmitted. The problem is reformulated within the framework of complex Toda chain model which allows one to carry out the simplified description of the optical soliton dynamics. We elucidate how the bit composition of the pattern affects the initial (linear) stage of the train dynamics and explain the general mechanisms of the appearance of unstable collective soliton modes. Then we discuss the nonlinear regime using asymptotic properties of the pulse stream at large propagation distances and analyze the dynamical behavior of the train classifying different scenarios for the pattern instabilities. Both approaches are based on the machinery of Hermitian and non-Hermitian lattice analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

We report for the first time, rogue waves generation in a mode-locked fiber laser that worked in multiple-soliton state in which hundreds of solitons occupied the whole laser cavity. Using real-time spatio-temporal intensity dynamics measurements, it is unveiled that nonlinear soliton collision accounts for the formation of rogue waves in this laser state. The nature of interactions between solitons are also discussed. Our observation may suggest similar formation mechanisms of rogue waves in other systems.
