Successful commercialization of a technology such as Fiber Bragg Gratings requires the ability to manufacture devices repeatably, quickly and at low cost. Although the first report of photorefractive gratings was in 1978 it was not until 1993, when phase mask fabrication was demonstrated, that this became feasible. More recently, draw tower fabrication on a production level and grating writing through the polymer jacket have been realized; both important developments since they preserve the intrinsic strength of the fiber. Potentially the most significant recent development has been femtosecond laser inscription of gratings. Although not yet a commercial technology, it provides the means of writing multiple gratings in the optical core providing directional sensing capability in a single fiber. Femtosecond processing can also be used to machine the fiber to produce micronscale slots and holes enhancing the interaction between the light in the core and the surrounding medium. © 2011 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd. Nonlinear phenomena occurring in optical fibres have many attractive features and great, but not yet fully explored potential in signal processing. Here, we review recent progress on the use of fibre nonlinearities for the generation and shaping of optical pulses, and on the applications of advanced pulse waveforms in all-optical signal processing. Among other topics, we will discuss ultrahigh repetition-rate pulse sources, the generation of parabolic-shaped pulses in active and passive fibres, the generation of pulses with triangular temporal profiles, and coherent supercontinuum sources. The signal processing applications will span optical regeneration, linear distortion compensation, optical decision at the receiver in optical communication systems, spectral and temporal signal doubling, and frequency conversion. © 2012 IEEE.

Synthesis of a sharp switching characteristic is experimentally demonstrated by concatenation of nonlinear optical loop mirrors. A novel configuration has been used which results in three terminal operation of the device. This device can be used as a logic gate and for pulse shaping to produce square pulses. © 1993 Taylor and Francis Ltd.

We measure complex amplitude of scattered wave in the far field, and justify theoretically and numerically solution of the inverse scattering problem. This allows single-shot reconstructing of dielectric function distribution during direct femtosecond laser micro-fabrication.

We demonstrate a novel dual-wavelength erbium-fiber laser that uses a single nonlinear-optical loop mirror modulator to simultaneously modelock two cavities with chirped fiber Bragg gratings as end mirrors. We show that this configuration produces synchronized soliton pulse trains with an ultra-low RMS inter-pulse-stream timing jitter of 620 fs enabling application to multiwavelength systems at data rates in excess of 130 Gb/s. © 1995 IEEE

We describe an all-fibre, passive scheme for making extended range interferometric measurements based on the dual wavelength technique. The coherence tuned interferometer network is illuminated with a single superfluorescent fibre source at 1.55 μm and the two wavelengths are synthesised at the output by means of chirped fibre Bragg gratings. We demonstrate an unambiguous sensing range of 270 μm, with a dynamic range of 2.7 × 105.

This paper compares the environmental sensing behaviour of long period gratings written in three fibers with different refractive index profiles: step, W and a progressive three layered fiber. The measurands considered are temperature, refractive index, axial strain and bending, and the spectral behaviour of individual attenuation bands were observed and, where possible, compared to theoretical predictions. Significant differences in the behaviour of the three fiber types were found. © 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A novel all-optical time domain regeneration technique using nonlinear pulse broadening and flattening in normal dispersion fiber and subsequent temporal slicing by an amplitude modulator (or a device performing a similar function) is proposed. Substantial suppression of the timing jitter of jitter-degraded optical signals is demonstrated using the proposed approach. © 2005 IEEE.

We have UV-inscribed and theoretically and experimentally analyzed fiber gratings with the structure tilted at 45° and implemented this type of devices as an in-fiber polarizer. A systematic investigation has been carried out on the characterization of 45° tilted fiber gratings (45° TFGs) in terms of the polarization-dependant loss (PDL) and thermal response. The detailed theoretical modeling has revealed a linear correlation between the grating length and the PDL, which has been proved by the experimental results. For the first time, we have examined the UV beam diffraction from a tilted phase mask and designed the UV-inscription system to suit the 45° TFG fabrication. Experimentally, a 24 mm long 45° TFG UV-inscribed in standard telecom single-mode fiber exhibited around 25 dB PDL at 1530 nm and an over ~300 nm bandwidth of PDL spectrum. By the concatenation method, a 44 mm long grating showed a PDL as high as 40 dB that is close to the high polarization extinction ratio of commercial products. Moreover, we have revealed that the PDL of 45° TFGs has low thermal influence, which is desirable for real application devices. Finally, we experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber twist sensor system based on a 45° and an 81° TFG.

This chapter deals with gratings recorded in polymeric optical fibers (POFs); predominantly those based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). We summarize the different mechanical and optical properties of POFs which are relevant to the application of POF Bragg gratings and discuss the existing literature on the subject of the UV photosensitivity of PMMA. All-optical technologies for data processing and signal manipulation are expected to play a major role in future optical communications. Nonlinear phenomena occurring in optical fibre have many attractive features and great, but not yet fully exploited potential in optical signal processing. Here, we overview our recent results and advances in developing novel photonic techniques and approaches to all-optical processing based on fibre nonlinearities. Amongst other topics, we will discuss phase-preserving optical 2R regeneration, the possibility of using parabolic/flat-top pulses for optical signal processing and regeneration, and nonlinear optical pulse shaping. A method for passive nonlinear pulse shaping based on pulse pre-chirping and propagation in a normally dispersive fibre will be presented. The approach provides a simple way of generating various temporal waveforms of fundamental and practical interest. Particular emphasis will be given to the formation and characterization of pulses with a triangular intensity profile. A new technique of doubling/copying optical pulses in both the frequency and time domains using triangular-shaped pulses will be also introduced.

For the first time, Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structures have been inscribed in single-core passive germanate and three-core passive and active tellurite glass fibers using 800 nm femtosecond (fs) laser and phase mask technique. With fs peak power intensity in the order of 10(11)W/cm(2), the FBG spectra with 2nd and 3rd order resonances at 1540 and 1033 nm in the germanate glass fiber and 2nd order resonances at approximately 1694 and approximately 1677 nm with strengths up to 14 dB in all three cores in the tellurite fiber were observed. Thermal responsivities of the FBGs made in these mid-IR glass fibers were characterized, showing average temperature responsivity approximately 20 pm/ degrees C. Strain responsivities of the FBGs in germanate glass fiber were measured to be 1.219 pm/microepsilon.

We demonstrate experimentally a novel and simple tunable all-optical incoherent negative-tap fiber-optic transversal filter based on a distribution feedback laser diode and high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). In this filter, variable time delay is provided by cascaded high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), and the tuning of the filter is realized by tuning different FBG to match the fixed carrier wavelength, or adjusting the carrier wavelength to fit different FBG. The incoherent negative tapping is realized by using the carrier depletion effect in a distribution feedback laser diode.

A 42.6 Gbit/s all-optical non-retum-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format converter using a single SOA followed by an asymmetrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented. The format converter generates a correctly-coded RZ signal with a controllable duty-cycle. It has the advantages of flexible input N RZ wavelength, preserved input polarity, negative bit error rate power penalty and low switching pulse energy (15fJ).

A tunable master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) picosecond optical pulse source using all chirped quantum dot (QD) structures is demonstrated (60nm tunability). Under fundamental mode-locked operation, the highest peak power of 4.39 W is achieved.
