Single polarisation operation of a fibre ring laser was realised by employing an intra-cavity 9.3°-tilted fibre Bragg grating as an in-fibre polariser. The laser showed a polarisationextinction-ratio of ~ 31dB with a good stability. © 2010 Optical Society of America.

We demonstrate the numerical model which allows investigation of gyroscopic effect in hybrid mode-locked bidirectional Erbium-doped fibre ring laser. The model is based on transport theory with accounting of dispersion, gain in EDFA and saturable absorption. The predictions of gyroscopic effect are also presented for the particular laser cavity.

We have investigated a hybrid mode-locked Erbium-doped fibre ring laser without optical isolator. Creating different losses in the cavity for counter-propagating pulses via net birefringence adjusting, the laser can operate in both unidirectional regimes with extinction over 22 dB, as well as can establish stable bidirectional generation.

We propose and demonstrate a switchable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fibre ring laser. Competition between the lasing wavelengths in erbium-doped fibre laser at room temperature is suppressed by incorporating a two-channel fibre Bragg grating (TC-FBG), which consists of two highly localized sub-gratings fabricated by femtosecond laser in single mode fibre. Wavelengths and polarization states of the lasing lines are selected by the TC-FBG. Laser output can be switched between single- and dual-wavelength operations by simply adjusting the polarization controller. Stable dual-wavelength output is verified at room temperature with a power fluctuation less than 0.27 dB, and wavelength fluctuation less than 0.004 nm.

Insight into instabilities of fiber laser regimes leading to complex self-pulsing operations is an opportunity to unlock the high power and dynamic operation tunability of lasers. Though many models have been suggested, there is no complete covering of self-pulsing complexity observed experimentally. Here, I further generalized our previous vector model of erbium-doped fiber laser and, for the first time, to the best of my knowledge, map tunability of complex vector self-pulsing on Poincare sphere (limit cycles and double scroll polarization attractors) for laser parameters, e.g., power, ellipticity of the pump wave, and in-cavity birefringence. Analysis validated by extensive numerical simulations demonstrates good correspondence to the experimental results on complex self-pulsing regimes obtained by many authors during the last 20 years.

We report a two-stage diode-pumped Er-doped fiber amplifier operating at the wavelength of 1550 nm at the repetition rate of 10-100 kHz with an average output power of up to 10 W. The first stage comprising Er-doped fiber was core-pumped at the wavelength of 1480 nm, whereas the second stage comprising double-clad Er/Yb-doped fiber was clad-pumped at the wavelength of 975 nm. The estimated peak power for the 0.4-nm full-width at half-maximum laser emission at the wavelength of 1550 nm exceeded 4-kW level. The initial 100-ns seed diode laser pulse was compressed to 3.5 ns as a result of the 34-dB total amplification. The observed 30-fold efficient pulse compression reveals a promising new nonlinear optical technique for the generation of high power short pulses for applications in eye-safe ranging and micromachining.
