We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber single-polarization dual-wavelength Yb-doped fiber laser passively mode-locked with a 45°-tilted fiber grating for the first time. Stable dual-wavelength operation exhibits double-rectangular spectral profile centered at 1033 and 1053 nm, respectively. The 3 dB bandwidth of each rectangular optical spectrum is estimated as 10 nm. The separation of two fundamental repetition rates is 6 kHz. By employing the 45° TFG with the polarization-dependent loss of 33 dB, output pulses with 27 dB polarization extinction ratio are implemented in the experiment. The single pulse centered at 1053 nm is researched by using a filter at the output port of the laser, and the experimental results denote that the output ps pulses are highly chirped. The formation mechanism of dual-wavelength operation is investigated.

In this letter, we report on a high-power operation of an optically pumped quantum-dot semiconductor disk laser designed for emission at 1180 nm. As a consequence of the optimization of the operation conditions, a record-high continuous-wave output power exceeding 7 W is obtained for this wavelength at a heat-sink temperature of 2 °C. A wavelength tuning over a range of 37 nm is achieved using a birefringent filter inside the cavity.

In recent years, quantum-dot (QD) semiconductor lasers attract significant interest in many practical applications due to their advantages such as high-power pulse generation because to the high gain efficiency. In this work, the pulse shape of an electrically pumped QD-laser under high current is analyzed. We find that the slow rise time of the pulsed pump may significantly affect the high intensity output pulse. It results in sharp power dropouts and deformation of the pulse profile. We address the effect to dynamical change of the phase-amplitude coupling in the proximity of the excited state (ES) threshold. Under 30ns pulse pumping, the output pulse shape strongly depends on pumping amplitude. At lower currents, which correspond to lasing in the ground state (GS), the pulse shape mimics that of the pump pulse. However, at higher currents the pulse shape becomes progressively unstable. The instability is greatest when in proximity to the secondary threshold which corresponds to the beginning of the ES lasing. After the slow rise stage, the output power sharply drops out. It is followed by a long-time power-off stage and large-scale amplitude fluctuations. We explain these observations by the dynamical change of the alpha-factor in the QD-laser and reveal the role of the slowly rising pumping processes in the pulse shaping and power dropouts at higher currents. The modeling is in very good agreement with the experimental observations. © 2014 SPIE.

Full text: Semiconductor quantum dot lasers are attractive for multipletechnological applications in biophotonics. Simultaneous two-state lasing ofground state (GS) and excited state (ES) electrons and holes in QD lasers ispossible under a certain parameter range. It has already been investigated in steady-stateoperations and in dynamical regimes and is currently a subject of the intesiveresearch. It has been shown that the relaxation frequency in the two-state lasingregime is not a function of the total intensity [1], as could be traditionallyexpected. In this work we study damping relaxation oscillations in QD lasersimultaneously operating at two transitions, and find that under variouspumping conditions, the frequency of oscillations may decrease, increase orstay without change in time as shown in Fig1.The studied QD laser structure wasgrown on a GaAs substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy. The active region includedfive layers of self-assembled InAs QDs separated with a GaAs spacer from a5.3nm thick covering layer of InGaAs and processed into 4mm-wide mesa stripe devices. The 2.5mm long lasers withhigh-and antireflection coatings on the rear and front facets lasesimultaneously at the GS (around 1265nm) and ES (around 1190nm) in the wholerange of pumping. Pulsed electrical pumping obtained from a high power (up to2A current) pulse source was used to achieve high output power operation. We simultaneously detect the total output and merely ES output using aBragg filter transmitting the short-wavelength and reflecting the long-wavelengthradiation. Typical QD does not demonstrate relaxation oscillations frequencybecause of the strong damping [2]. It is confirmed for the low (I<0.68A) andhigh (I>1.2 A) range of the pump currents in our experiments. The situationis different for a short range of the medium currents (0.68Alaser turns on andstarts to operate simultaneously. The frequency of oscillations may either significantlydecrease (from 2 GHz to 1 GHz) or sufficiently increase (from 2 GHz to 4 GHz)within 20 ns of the pulse duration. The oscilations appear simultaneously at GSand ES and are always damped, but can be either inphase or antiphase dependingon the pump current and temperature conditions. We address the excitation of the relaxation oscillations to non-instantaneousturn on of the pumping source which activates with 5ns rise time and discussthe swap of the oscillation's frequency in time to spectral shifts caused by thermaleffects. A highly sensitive liquid-level sensor based on dual-wavelength single-longitudinal-mode fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. The laser is formed by exploiting two parallel arranged phase-shift fiber Bragg gratings (ps-FBGs), acting as ultra-narrow bandwidth filters, into a doublering resonators. By beating the dual-wavelength lasing output, a stable microwave signal with frequency stability better than 5 MHz is obtained. The generated beat frequency varies with the change of dual-wavelength spacing. Based on this characteristic, with one ps-FBG serving as the sensing element and the other one acting as the reference element, a highly sensitive liquid level sensor is realized by monitoring the beat frequency shift of the laser. The sensor head is directly bonded to a float which can transfer buoyancy into axial strain on the fiber without introducing other elastic elements. The experimental results show that an ultra-high liquidlevel sensitivity of 2.12 × 107 MHz/m within the measurement range of 1.5 mm is achieved. The sensor presents multiple merits including ultra-high sensitivity, thermal insensitive, good reliability and stability. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

We present, for the first time, a detailed investigation of the impact of second order co-propagating Raman pumping on long-haul 100G WDM DP-QPSK coherent transmission of up to 7082 km using Raman fibre laser based configurations. Signal power and noise distributions along the fibre for each pumping scheme were characterised both numerically and experimentally. Based on these pumping schemes, the Q factor penalties versus co-pump power ratios were experimentally measured and quantified. A significant Q factor penalty of up to 4.15 dB was observed after 1666 km using symmetric bidirectional pumping, compared with counter-pumping only. Our results show that whilst using co-pumping minimises the intra-cavity signal power variation and amplification noise, the Q factor penalty with co-pumping was too great for any advantage to be seen. The relative intensity noise (RIN) characteristics of the induced fibre laser and the output signal, and the intra-cavity RF spectra of the fibre laser are also presented. We attribute the Q factor degradation to RIN induced penalty due to RIN being transferred from the first order fibre laser and second order co-pump to the signal. More importantly, there were two different fibre lasing regimes contributing to the amplification. It was random distributed feedback lasing when using counter-pumping only and conventional Fabry-Perot cavity lasing when using all bidirectional pumping schemes. This also results in significantly different performances due to different laser cavity lengths for these two classes of laser.

Tunable Raman fiber lasers have attracted great interest owing to their high efficiency and reliability important for applications, such as optical fiber communications and sensing, spectroscopy, and instrument testing. Their tuning range is defined by the Raman gain bandwidth amounting to about 40 nm in telecom spectral range (∼1550 nm) for conventional silica single mode fibers (SMF). To increase the range, highly nonlinear fibers which broaden pump spectrum may be incorporated in the cavity of Raman fiber lasers, see e.g. [1]. Another approach is to involve Rayleigh scattering forming random distributed feedback in a relatively long fiber resulting in prominent flattening of the tuning curve [2]. In this paper we report on combination of these two techniques in tunable Raman fiber lasers thus providing great improvement of their output characteristics. © 2013 IEEE.

Lasers with random distributed feedback (DFB) owing to Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers [1] have attracted a great interest: a number of papers demonstrating new laser schemes and applications have been proposed [2-7] recently. Moreover, the generation output power and, more generally, generation power distribution could be described both analytically and numerically within simple balance models [8-9]. However, spectral properties of random DFB fiber lasers are not studied except some attempt made in [10]. Generation spectrum of random DFB fiber laser is quite broad (more than 1 nm), and physical mechanisms of its formation and broadening are still unclear. There is no any practical solution up to date to minimize the generation spectrum width. Here we experimentally show the way to minimize the generation spectral width. © 2013 IEEE.

We have proposed and demonstrated passive harmonic mode locking of an erbium doped fiber laser with soliton pulse shaping using carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol film. Two types of samples prepared by using filtration and centrifugation were studied. The demonstrated fiber laser can support 10th harmonic order corresponding to 245 MHz repetition rate with an output power of ~12 mW. More importantly, all stable harmonic orders show timing jitter below 10 ps. The output pulses energies are between 25 to 56 pJ. Both samples result in the same central wavelength of output optical spectrum with similar pulse duration of ~1 ps for all harmonic orders. By using the same laser configuration, centrifugated sample exhibits slightly lower pulse chirp. © 2012 Optical Society of America.

A thulium-doped all-fiber laser passively mode-locked by the co-action of nonlinear polarization evolution and single-walled carbon nanotubes operating at 1860-1980 nm wavelength band is demonstrated. Pumped with the single-mode laser diode at 1.55 μm laser generates near 500-fs soliton pulses at repetition rate ranging from 6.3 to 72.5 MHz in single-pulse operation regime. Having 3-m long cavity average output power reached 300 mW, giving the peak power of 4.88 kW and the pulse energy of 2.93 nJ with slope efficiency higher than 30%. At a 21.6-m long ring cavity average output power of 117 mW is obtained, corresponding to the pulse energy up to 10.87 nJ and a pulse peak power of 21.7 kW, leading to the higher-order soliton generation.

Operation of a single-clad Dy 3+-doped ZrF 4-BaF 2-LaF 3-AlF 3-NaF (ZBLAN) fiber laser operating at mid-infrared near 3 μm is presented. The laser is pumped by an Yb 3+-doped silica fiber laser centered at 1088 nm. An output of near 0.1 W with a slope efficiency of up to 23% with respect to absorbed pump power was measured. The laser performance, theoretical modeling and laser spectrum of Dy fiber laser system with respect to various cavity losses are studied. The experimental slope efficiency is more than 4.5 times higher than the previous demonstration, and is 64% of the Stokes efficiency limit. The efficiency was improved by using cavity mirrors of reflectivities of 99 and 50%. The emission central wavelength and spectral width are found to be dependent on the pump power and output coupler, reflectivity. © 2011 by Astro Ltd., published exclusively by WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present the operation of an ultrafast passively mode-locked fibre laser, in which flexible control of the pulse formation mechanism is readily realised by an in-cavity programmable filter the dispersion and bandwidth of which can be software configured. We show that conventional soliton, dispersion- managed (DM) soliton (stretched-pulse) and dissipative soliton mode-locking regimes can be reliably targeted by changing the filter’s dispersion and bandwidth only, while no changes are made to the physical layout of the laser cavity. Numerical simulations are presented which confirm the different nonlinear pulse evolutions inside the laser cavity. The proposed technique holds great potential for achieving a high degree of control over the dynamics and output of ultrafast fibre lasers, in contrast to the traditional method to control the pulse formation mechanism in a DM fibre laser, which involves manual optimisation of the relative length of fibres with opposite-sign dispersion in the cavity. Our versatile ultrafast fibre laser will be attractive for applications requiring different pulse profiles such as in optical signal processing and optical communications.
