Through modelling of direct error computation, a reduction of pattern- dependent errors in a standard fiber-based transmission link at 40 Gb/s rate is demonstrated by application of a skewed data pre-encoding. The trade-off between the bit-error rate improvement and the data rate loss is examined.

The fabrication of micro-channels in single-mode optical fibers is demonstrated using focused femtosecond laser processing and chemical etching. Straight line micro-channels are achieved based on a simple technique which overcomes limitations imposed by the fiber curved surface. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

We propose a simplified approach to optical signal pre-distortion based on adaptive pulse shaping through unconventional use of a MZ modulator. The scheme allows natural tailoring of transmitted pulses by optimising the received pulse.

We present a concept for all-optical differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal regeneration, based on a new design of Raman amplified nonlinear loop mirror (RA-NOLM). We demonstrate simultaneous amplitude-shape regeneration and phase noise reduction in high-speed DPSK systems by use of the RA-NOLM combined with spectral filtering.

We report an in-fiber polarizer implemented using a 45° tilted FBG. Polarization extinction ratio of 28dB at 1550nm and HMFW over 80nm has been demonstrated. When the un-polarized light passes this device, 99.5% of degree of polarization can be achieved.

Optical differentiators constitute a basic device for analog all-optical signal processing [1]. Fiber grating approaches, both fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and long period grating (LPG), constitute an attractive solution because of their low cost, low insertion losses, and full compatibility with fiber optic systems. A first order differentiator LPG approach was proposed and demonstrated in [2], but FBGs may be preferred in applications with a bandwidth up to few nm because of the extreme sensitivity of LPGs to environmental fluctuations [3]. Several FBG approaches have been proposed in [3-6], requiring one or more additional optical elements to create a first-order differentiator. A very simple, single optical element FBG approach was proposed in [7] for first order differentiation, applying the well-known logarithmic Hilbert transform relation of the amplitude and phase of an FBG in transmission [8]. Using this relationship in the design process, it was theoretically and numerically demonstrated that a single FBG in transmission can be designed to simultaneously approach the amplitude and phase of a first-order differentiator spectral response, without need of any additional elements. © 2013 IEEE.

Simultaneous strain and temperature measurement for advanced 3-D braided composite materials using fibre-optic sensor technology is demonstrated, for the first time. These advanced 3-D braided composites can virtually eliminate the most serious problem of delamination for conventional composites. A tandem in-fibre Bragg-grating (FBG)/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor (EFPI) system with improved accuracy has been used to facilitate simultaneous temperature and strain measurement in this work. The non-symmetric distortion of the optical spectrum of the FBG, due to the combination of the FBG and the EFPI, is observed for the first time. Experimental and theoretical studies indicate that this type of distortion can affect the measurement accuracy seriously and it is mainly caused by the modulation of the periodic output of the EFPI. A simple method has been demonstrated to improve the accuracy for detection of the wavelength-shift of the FBG induced by temperature change. A strain accuracy of ∼ ±20 με and a temperature accuracy of ∼ ±1 °C have been achieved, which can meet the requirements for practical applications of 3-D braided composites. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The never-stopping increase in demand for information transmission capacity has been met with technological advances in telecommunication systems, such as the implementation of coherent optical systems, advanced multilevel multidimensional modulation formats, fast signal processing, and research into new physical media for signal transmission (e.g. a variety of new types of optical fibers). Since the increase in the signal-to-noise ratio makes fiber communication channels essentially nonlinear (due to the Kerr effect for example), the problem of estimating the Shannon capacity for nonlinear communication channels is not only conceptually interesting, but also practically important. Here we discuss various nonlinear communication channels and review the potential of different optical signal coding, transmission and processing techniques to improve fiber-optic Shannon capacity and to increase the system reach.
