The authors demonstrate that in-fibre Bragg gratings may be successfully used to measure megahertz acoustic fields if the grating length is sufficiently short and the optical fibre is appropriately desensitised. A noise-limited pressure resolution of 4.5 × 10 –3 atm vHz was found. The capability to simultaneously act as a temperature sensor is also demonstrated.

We demonstrate the feasibility of using in-fibre Bragg gratings to measure MHz acoustic fields and temperature simultaneously. We achieved a noise-limited pressure resolution of ˜4.5×10-4 Atm/vHz and a temperature resolution of 0.2°C.

The fabrication and characterization of long-period gratings (LPGs) in fiber tapers is presented alongside supporting theory. The devices possess a high sensitivity to the index of aqueous solutions due to an observed spectral bifurcation effect, yielding a limiting index resolution of ±8.5×10-5 for solutions with an index in the range 1.330-1.335.

Small scale laboratory experiments, in which the specimen is considered to represent an element of soil in the soil mass, are essential to the evolution of fundamental theories of mechanical behaviour. In this thesis, plane strain and axisymmetric compression tests, performed on a fine sand, are reported and the results are compared with various theoretical predictions. A new apparatus is described in which cuboidal samples can be tested in either axisymmetric compression or plane strain. The plane strain condition is simulated either by rigid side platens, in the conventional manner, or by flexible side platens which also measure the intermediate principal stress. Close control of the initial porosity of the specimens is achieved by a vibratory method of sample preparation. The strength of sand is higher in plane strain than in axisymmetric compression, and the strains required to mobilize peak strength are much smaller. The difference between plane strain and axisymmetric compression behaviour is attributed to the restrictions on particle movement enforced by the plane strain condition; this results in an increase in the frictional component of shear strength. The stress conditions at failure in plane strain, including the intermediate principal stress, are accurately predicted by a theory based on the stress- dilatancy interpretation of Mohr's circles. Detailed observations of rupture modes are presented and measured rupture plane inclinations are predicted by the stress-dilatancy theory. Although good correlation with the stress-dilatancy theory is obtained during virgin loading, in both axisymmetric compression and plane strain, the stress-dilatancy rule is only obeyed during reloading if the specimen has been unloaded to approximate ambient stress conditions. The shape of the stress-strain curves during pre-peak deformation, in both plane strain and axisymmetric compression, is accurately described bv a combined parabolic-hyperbolic specification.

In this letter, we present a standard linear cavity fiber laser incorporating a microchannel for refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing. The microchannel of ~6µm width created by femtosecond laser aided chemical etching provides an access to the external liquid; therefore, the laser cavity loss changes with the liquids of different RIs. Thus, at a fixed pump power, the output laser power will vary with the change of RI in the microchannel. The results show that the proposed sensing system has a linear response to both the surrounding medium RI and temperature. The RI sensitivity of the laser system is on the order of 10-3, while the temperature sensitivity is about 0.02 C. Both sensitivities could be further enhanced by employing a more sensitive photodetector and using higher pump power.

A dual-parameter optical sensor has been realized by UV-writing a long-period and a Bragg grating structure in D-fiber. The hybrid configuration permits the detection of the temperature from the latter and measuring the external refractive index from the former responses, respectively. The employment of the D-fiber allows as effective modification and enhancement of the device sensitivity by cladding etching. The grating sensor has been used to measure the concentrations of aqueous sugar solutions, demonstrating the potential capability to detect concentration changes as small as 0.01%.

A novel transition temperature in MeAM copolymer microgels is reported. Despite the fact that MeAM homopolymers do not show thermosensitive properties, a specific synthetic strategy leads to a thermo-responsive swelling behavior that could be potentially useful in medical and/or industrial applications. The pH and temperature-dependent swelling response of microgels of MeAM copolymerized with 2-aminomethylpyridine and ethylenediamine is reported. The changes in particle sizes, which depend on the nature of the surrounding environment, are recorded by QELS. The relation between copolymer structure and its novel behavior is analyzed by several techniques (1H NMR, TGA).

A compact scheme for simultaneous temperature and surrounding refractive index (SRI) measurement using two long-period gratings (LPGs) of different periods inscribed side-by-side in a single piece of a double-cladding fibre is presented. One of the LPGs is sensitive to both SRI and temperature, whilst the second is sensitive to temperature only.

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for simultaneous measurement of liquid level and temperature based on a simple uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG) by monitoring both the short-wavelength-loss peaks and its Bragg resonance. The liquid level can be measured from the amplitude changes of the short-wavelength-loss peaks, while temperature can be measured from the wavelength shift of the Bragg resonance. Both theoretical simulation results and experimental results are presented. Such a scheme has some advantages including robustness, simplicity, flexibility in choosing sensitivity and simultaneous temperature measurement capability.

The current state of knowledge and understanding of the long fatigue crack propagation behavior of nickel-base superalloys are reviewed, with particular emphasis on turbine disk materials. The data are presented in the form of crack growth rate versus stress intensity factor range curves, and the effects of such variables as microstructure, load ratio, and temperature in the near-threshold and Paris regimes of the curves, are discussed.
