We present a compact scheme for simultaneous temperature and surrounding refractive index (SRI) measurement using two long period gratings (LPGs) of different periods inscribed side-by-side in a single piece of a double-cladding fibre. One of the LPGs is sensitive to both SRI and temperature changes whilst the second is SRI-insensitive but shows spectral shift with temperature changes. In addition, we show that a resonance peak of the SRI-insensitive LPG can be designed to appear in the EDFA wavelength region with potential use for gain flattening applications.

We study the effects of temperature and strain on the spectra of the first and second-order diffraction attenuation bands of a single long-period grating (LPG) in step-index fibre. The primary and second-order attenuation bands had comparable strength with the second-order bands appearing in the visible and near-infra red parts of the spectrum. Using first and second-order diffraction to the eighth cladding mode a sensitivity matrix was obtained with limiting accuracy given by cross-sensitivity of ∼ 1.19% of the measurement. The sensing scheme presented as a limiting temperature and strain resolution of ± 0.7 °C and ∼ ± 25 με. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Long period gratings (LPGs) were written into a progressive three-layered (PTL) monomode optical fiber. The spectral sensitivity was experimentally measured with respect to temperature and the surrounding refractive index, and compared with theoretical predictions. The behavior of the devices suggests that this type of fiber may be useful as a means of reducing the sensitivity of LPGs to the surrounding medium and for simultaneous temperature and refractive index sensing.

A long period fibre grating written in progressive three layered optical fibre was examined. The bending sensitivity of the optical fibre was measured. It was found that the fibre shows an attenuation band that has a very low bending sensitivity compared to normal step-index fibres.

This paper compares the environmental sensing behaviour of long period gratings written in three fibers with different refractive index profiles: step, W and a progressive three layered fiber. The measurands considered are temperature, refractive index, axial strain and bending, and the spectral behaviour of individual attenuation bands were observed and, where possible, compared to theoretical predictions. A long period grating is interrogated with a fibre Bragg grating using a derivative spectroscopy technique. A quasi-linear relationship between the output of the sensing scheme and the curvature experienced by the long period grating is demonstrated, with a sensitivity of 5.05 m and with an average curvature resolution of 2.9 × 10-2 m-1. In addition, the feasibility of multiplexing an in-line series of long period gratings with this interrogation scheme is demonstrated with two pairs of fibre Bragg gratings and long period gratings. With this arrangement the cross-talk error between channels was less than ± 2.4 × 10-3 m-1.

A long period grating (LPG) written in a standard optical fibre was modified by using a femtosecond laser to induce an asymmetric change in the cladding's refractive index. This device produced blue and red wavelength shifts depending on the orientation of applied curvature, with maximum sensitivities of -1.6 nm m and +3.8 nm m, suggesting that this type of LPG may be useful as a shape sensor.

A single long-period fibre grating was written in a biconical fibre taper made from standard communications step-index optical fibre, resulting in an interferometric fibre sensor device that provided a resolution of 1 × 10-4 for refractive indices in the range of 1.30 to 1.34, suggesting that these devices may be suitable for use with aqueous solutions. © IEE 2005.

The fabrication and characterization of long-period gratings (LPGs) in fiber tapers is presented alongside supporting theory. The devices possess a high sensitivity to the index of aqueous solutions due to an observed spectral bifurcation effect, yielding a limiting index resolution of ±8.5 × 10-5 for solutions with an index in the range 1.330-1.335. © 2006 IEEE.

Femtosecond-pulsed laser writing of waveguides, a few mm long, is demonstrated; waveguides were written orthogonally to the writing beam inside the bulk of ErIII-doped oxyfluoride glasses at a depth of 160 mum. The writing beam was 795 nm wavelength, 54 fs pulse duration and 11 MHz repetition rate. Tracks were written at pulse energies of 13.1 nJ to 26.1 nJ and sample translational velocity of 10 mmmiddot.s-1 to 28 mmmiddots-1. The influence of translational velocity and pulse energy on the cross-sectional shape and integrity of the written tracks is reported. Tracks tend to be narrower as the pulse energy is lowered or translational velocity decreased. Above 22.9 nJ, pulse energy, tracks tend to crack. The estimated refractive index profile of one track has a maximum increase of refractive index of 0.003 at the centre. These glasses normally form nano-glass-ceramics on heat treatment just above the glass transformation temperature (Tg). Here, a post-fs-writing heat-treatment just above Tg causes nano-ceramming of the glass sample and removes a light-guiding peripheral region of the fs-written tracks suggesting that this region may have been fs-modified by stress alone. Waveguiding at 651 nm and 973 nm wavelengths, and upconversion, are demonstrated in optimally written tracks.

We demonstrate the use of tilted fiber gratings to assist the generation of localized infrared surface Plasmons with short propagation lengths and a sensitivity of dλ/dn = 3365 nm in the aqueous index regime. It was also found that the resonances could be spectrally tuned over 1000 nm at the same spatial region with high coupling efficiency (in excess of 25 dB) by altering the polarization of the light illuminating the device. © 2007 Optical Society of America.

Static mechanical properties of 2124 Al/SiCp MMC have been measured as a function of solution temperature and time. An optimum solution treatment has been established which produces significant improvements in static mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth resistance over conventional solution treatments. Increasing the solution treatment parameters up to the optimum values improves the mechanical properties because of intermetallic dissolution, improved solute and GPB zone strengthening and increased matrix dislocation density. Increasing the solution treatment parameters beyond the optimum values results in a rapid reduction in mechanical properties due to the formation of gas porosity and surface blisters. The optimum solution treatment improves tensile properties in the transverse orientation to a greater extent than in the longitudinal orientation and this results in reduced anisotropy. © 1996 Elsevier Science Limited.

The ageing response of 2124 Al-SiC particulate metal-matrix composite (MMC) and unreinforced alloy has been examined using hardness measurements and Arrhenius analysis. The formation of phases during precipitation has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The MMC exhibits accelerated ageing compared to unreinforced alloy, due to enhanced S′ formation. The activation energy for diffusion is lower in the MMC than in the unreinforced alloy. DSC scans show Guinier-Preston B (GPB) zone nucleation to occur at a lower temperature in the MMC, whilst the total volume of GPB zones formed is smaller than in the unreinforced alloy. A model has been proposed to explain the GPB zone formation behaviour, in which ease of GPB zone nucleation varies within the MMC, as a function of ageing time and of position within the matrix. S′ formation is enhanced in the MMC because of improved diffusion and a large increase in density of heterogeneous nucleation sites compared to the unreinforced alloy. © 1994 Chapman & Hall.

The use of near infrared, high intensity femtosecond laser pulses for the inscription of long period fiber gratings in photonic crystal fiber is reported. The formation of grating structures in photonic crystal fiber is complicated by the fiber structure that allows wave-guidance but that impairs and scatters the femtosecond inscription beam. The effects of symmetric and asymmetric femtosecond laser inscriptions are compared and the polarization characteristics of long period gratings and their responses to external perturbations are reported.
