We describe a novel technique to provide demultiplexing of fiber Bragg grating sensors, interrogated using interferometric wavelength shift detection. Amplitude modulation of multiple radio frequency driving signals allows an acoustooptic tunable filter to provide wavelength demultiplexing. We demonstrated a noise limited strain resolution of 150 nanostrain/v(Hz) and a crosstalk better than -50 dB.

This thesis describes the design and synthesis of a variety of functionalised phosphine oxides and sulfides, based on the structure of trioctylphosphine oxide, synthesised for the purpose of surface modification of quantum dots. The ability of the ligands to modify the surface chemistry via displacement of the original hexadecylamine capping layer of quantum dots was evaluated. Finally the surface modified quantum dots were investigated for enhancement in their inherent properties and improved compatibility with the various applications for which they were initially designed. Upon the commencement of research involving quantum dots it became apparent that more information on their behaviour and interaction with the environment was required. The limits of the inherent stability of hexadecylamine capped quantum dots were investigated by exposure to a number of different environments. The effect upon the stability of the quantum dots was monitored by changes in the photoluminescence ability of their cores. Subtle differences between different batches of quantum dots were observed and the necessity to account for these in future applications noted. Lastly the displacement of the original hexadecylamine coating with the "designer" functionalised ligands was evaluated to produce a set of conditions that would result in the best possible surface modification. A general procedure was elucidated however it was discovered that each displacement still required slight adjustment by consideration of the other factors such as the difference in ligand structure and the individuality of the various batches of quantum dots. This thesis also describes a procedure for the addition of a protective layer to the surface of quantum dots by cross-linking the functionalised ligands bound to the surface via an acyclic diene metathesis polymerisation. A detailed description of the problems encountered in the analysis of these materials combined with the use of novel techniques such as diffusion ordered spectroscopy is provided as a means to overcome the limitations encountered. Finally a demonstration of the superior stability, upon exposure to a range of aggressive environments of these protected materials compared with those before cross-linking provided physical proof of the cross-linking process and the advantages of the cross-linking modification. Finally this thesis includes the presentation of initial work into the production of luminescent nanocrystal encoded resin beads for the specific use in solid phase combinatorial chemistry. Demonstration of the successful covalent incorporation of quantum dots into the polymeric matrices of non-functionalised and functionalised resin beads is described. Finally by preliminary work to address and overcome the possible limitations that may be encountered in the production and general employment of these materials in combinatorial techniques is given.

We present a thorough study on the development of a polymer optical fibre-based tuneable filter utilizing an intra-core Bragg grating that is electrically tuneable, operating at 1.55 µm. The Bragg grating is made tuneable using a thin-film resistive heater deposited on the surface of the fibre. The polymer fibre was coated via the photochemical deposition of a Pd/Cu metallic layer with the procedure induced by VUV radiation at room temperature. The resulting device, when wavelength tuned via Joule heating, underwent a wavelength shift of 2 nm for a moderate input power of 160 mW, a wavelength to input power coefficient of -13.4 pm mW-1 and time constant of 1.7 s-1. A basic theoretical study verified that for this fibre type one can treat the device as a one-dimensional system. The model was extended to include the effect of input electrical power changes on the refractive index of the fibre and subsequently to changes in the Bragg wavelength of the grating, showing excellent agreement with the experimental measurements.

The statistics of the reflection spectrum of a short-correlated disordered fiber Bragg grating are studied. The averaged spectrum appears to be flat inside the bandgap and has significantly suppressed sidelobes compared to the uniform grating of the same bandwidth. This is due to the Anderson localization of the modes of a disordered grating. This observation prompts a new algorithm for designing passband reflection gratings. Using the stochastic invariant imbedding approach it is possible to obtain the probability distribution function for the random reflection coefficient inside the bandgap and obtain both the variance of the averaged reflectivity as well as the distribution of the time delay of the grating.

This paper proposes a novel design of optical filters based on a cascade of tailored fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) operating in the transmission regime. As an example of the application of the proposed general technique, ultranarrow optical vestigial sideband (VSB) filtering based on two FBGs operating in the transmission regime was examined. This design can be easily implemented by writing FBG-based filters for each wavelengthdivision-multiplexing channel before multiplexing. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper examines a method for locating within a scene a distribution of an absorbing gas using a passive imaging technique. An oscillatory modulation of the angle of a narrowband dielectric filter located in front of a camera imaging a scene, gives rise to an intensity modulation that differs in regions occupied by the absorbing gas. A preliminary low cost system has been constructed from readily available components which demonstrates how the location of gas within a scene can be implemented. Modelling of the system has been carried out, especially highlighting the transmission effects of the dielectric filter upon different regions of the image.

We propose a novel approach to ultra-narrow optical filtering based on a specially designed slightly asymmetric filter, which can be fabricated using fibre Bragg gratings. A feasibility of 8×40 Gbit/s DWDM RZ transmission with 0.8 bit/s/Hz spectral efficiency (without polarisation multiplexing) over 1280 km of SMF/DCF link without FEC has been confirmed by numerical modelling. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. Purpose: To determine the effect of coloured light filter overlays on reading rates for people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Method: Using a prospective clinical trial design, we examined the null hypothesis that coloured light filter overlays do not improve reading rates in AMD when compared to a clear filter. Reading rates for 12 subjects with non-exudative AMD, associated with a relative scotoma and central fixation (mean age 81 years, SD 5.07 years) were determined using the Rate of Reading Test® (printed, nonsense, lower case sans serif, stationary text) with 10 different, coloured light filter overlays (Intuitive Overlays®; figures in brackets are percentage transmission values); rose (78%), pink (78%), purple (67%), aqua (81%), blue (74%), lime-green (86%), mint-green (85%), yellow (93%), orange (83%) and grey (71%). A clear overlay (Roscolene # 00) (360 cdm-2) with 100% transmittance was used as a control. Results: ANOVA indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in reading rates with the coloured light filter overlays compared to the clear filter. Furthermore, chi-squared analysis indicated that the rose, purple and blue filters had a significantly poorer overall ranking in terms of reading rates compared to the other coloured and clear light filters. Conclusion: Coloured light filter overlays are unlikely to provide a clinically significant improvement in reading rates for people with non-exudative AMD associated with a relative scotoma and central fixation. A widely tunable and room-temperature operationable loss filter based on a long-period fibre grating (LPFG) fabricated in a B/Ge codoped fibre is reported. The filter exhibits extremely high temperature sensitivity. A maximum spectral shift of -48.1 nm from 10 to 40°C is achieved, corresponding to a thermal tuning efficiency of 1.6nm/°C. This value is increased by more than one order of magnitude compared with the LPFGs fabricated in standard telecom fibre, and even twice that of a LPFG with sensitivity enhanced by a special polymer.

A hybrid passive-active damping solution with improved system stability margin and enhanced dynamic performance is proposed for high power grid interactive converters. In grid connected active rectifier/inverter application, line side LCL filter improves the high frequency attenuation and makes the converter compatible with the stringent grid power quality regulations. Passive damping though offers a simple and reliable solution but it reduces overall converter efficiency. Active damping solutions do not increase the system losses but can guarantee the stable operation up to a certain speed of dynamic response which is limited by the maximum bandwidth of the current controller. This paper examines this limit and introduces a concept of hybrid passive-active damping solution with improved stability margin and high dynamic performance for line side LCL filter based active rectifier/inverter applications. A detailed design, analysis of the hybrid approach and trade-off between system losses and dynamic performance in grid connected applications are reported. Simulation and experimental results from a 10 kVA prototype demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. An analytical study on system stability and dynamic response with the variations of various controller and passive filter parameters is presented.

The thermal stability of porous sol-gel phosphosilicates was studied by comparing the textural features upon calcination between 400 and 550 °C. A significant loss of surface area and pore volume were observed; the first is due to thermal coarsening of the nanoparticles, and the pore volume reduction was ascribed to sintering of the most external nanoparticles producing less void volume. Lanthanum addition was investigated as thermal stabilizer. For the mesoporous phosphosilicate composition, lanthanum addition enhanced the surface area, showing a 45% and 50% improvement with respect to the La-free counterpart; the effect was much less visible for the macroporous composition.
