Performance optimization of ultra-long Raman laser links is studied theoretically and experimentally. We demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the signal power excursion by adjusting FBG reflectivity without compromising pump efficiency. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate an OSNR improvement of 4.3 dB in our system after 4000 km transmission by switching from conventional erbium-doped fibre amplifiers to quasi-lossless transmission. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. We demonstrate experimentally a novel and simple tunable all-optical incoherent negative-tap fiber-optic transversal filter based on a distribution feedback laser diode and high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). In this filter, variable time delay is provided by cascaded high reflection fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), and the tuning of the filter is realized by tuning different FBG to match the fixed carrier wavelength, or adjusting the carrier wavelength to fit different FBG. The incoherent negative tapping is realized by using the carrier depletion effect in a distribution feedback laser diode.

The THz optoelectronics field is now maturing and semiconductor-based THz antenna devices are becoming more widely implemented as analytical tools in spectroscopy and imaging. Photoconductive (PC) THz switches/antennas are driven optically typically using either an ultrashort-pulse laser or an optical signal composed of two simultaneous longitudinal wavelengths which are beat together in the PC material at a THz difference frequency. This allows the generation of (photo)carrier pairs which are then captured over ultrashort timescales usually by defects and trapping sites throughout the active material lattice. Defect-implanted PC materials with relatively high bandgap energy are typically used and many parameters such as carrier mobility and PC gain are greatly compromised. This paper demonstrates the implementation of low bandgap energy InAs quantum dots (QDs) embedded in standard crystalline GaAs as both the PC medium and the ultrafast capture mechanism in a PC THz antenna. This semiconductor structure is grown using standard MBE methods and allows the device to be optically driven efficiently at wavelengths up to ~1.3 µm, in this case by a single tunable dual-mode QD diode laser.

A compact all-room-temperature frequency-doubling scheme generating cw orange light with a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguide and a quantum-dot external cavity diode laser is demonstrated. A frequency-doubled power of up to 4.3 mW at the wavelength of 612.9 nm with a conversion efficiency exceeding 10% is reported. Second harmonic wavelength tuning between 612.9 nm and 616.3 nm by changing the temperature of the crystal is also demonstrated. © Springer-Verlag 2010.

A broadly tunable quantum-dot based ultra-short pulse master oscillator power amplifier with different diffraction grating orders as an external-cavity resonance feedback is studied. A broader tuning range, narrower optical spectra as well as higher peak power spectal density (maximun of 1.37 W/nm) from the second-order diffraction beam are achieved compared to those from the first-order diffraction beam in spite of slightly broader pulse duration from the secondorder diffraction. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2013.

Environmentally stable high-power erbium fiber soliton lasers are constructed by Kerr or carrier-type mode locking. We obtain high-energy pulses by using relatively short fiber lengths and providing large amounts of negative dispersion with chirped fiber Bragg gratings. The pulse energies and widths generated with both types of soliton laser are found to scale with the square root of the cavity dispersion. Kerr mode locking requires pulses with an approximately three times higher nonlinear phase shift in the cavity than carrier mode locking, which leads to the generation of slightly shorter pulses with as much as seven times higher pulse energies at the mode-locking threshold.

Internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of a high-brightness blue LED has been evaluated from the external quantum efficiency measured as a function of current at room temperature. Processing the data with a novel evaluation procedure based on the ABC-model, we have determined separately IQE of the LED structure and light extraction efficiency (LEE) of UX:3 chip. Full text Nowadays, understanding of LED efficiency behavior at high currents is quite critical to find ways for further improve­ment of III-nitride LED performance [1]. External quantum ef­ficiency ηe (EQE) provides integral information on the recom­bination and photon emission processes in LEDs. Meanwhile EQE is the product of IQE ηi and LEE ηext at negligible car­rier leakage from the active region. Separate determination of IQE and LEE would be much more helpful, providing correla­tion between these parameters and specific epi-structure and chip design. In this paper, we extend the approach of [2,3] to the whole range of the current/optical power variation, provid­ing an express tool for separate evaluation of IQE and LEE. We studied an InGaN-based LED fabricated by Osram OS. LED structure grown by MOCVD on sapphire substrate was processed as UX:3 chip and mounted into the Golden Dragon package without molding. EQE was measured with Labsphere CDS-600 spectrometer. Plotting EQE versus output power P and finding the power Pm corresponding to EQE maximum ηm enables comparing the measurements with the analytical rela­tionships ηi = Q/(Q+p1/2+p-1/2) ,p = P/Pm , and Q = B/(AC) 1/2 where A, Band C are recombination constants [4]. As a result, maximum IQE value equal to QI(Q+2) can be found from the ratio ηm/ηe plotted as a function of p1/2 +p1-1/2 (see Fig.la) and then LEE calculated as ηext = ηm (Q+2)/Q . Experimental EQE as a function of normalized optical power p is shown in Fig. 1 b along with the analytical approximation based on the ABC­model. The approximation fits perfectly the measurements in the range of the optical power (or operating current) variation by eight orders of magnitude. In conclusion, new express method for separate evaluation of IQE and LEE of III-nitride LEDs is suggested and applied to characterization of a high-brightness blue LED. This thesis presents the results of numerical modelling of ultra high-speed transmission using DM solitons. The theory of propagation in optical fibres is presented with specific reference to optical communication systems. This theory is then expanded to. incorporate dispersion-managed transmission and the dispersion managed soliton. The first part of this work focuses on ultra high-speed dispersion managed soliton propagation in short period dispersion maps. Initially, the cbaracteristics .of dispersion managed soliton propagation in short period dispersion maps are contrasted to those of the more conventional dispersion managed regime. These properties are then utilised to investigate transmission at single channel data rates of 80 Gbit/s, 160 Gbit/s and 320 Gbit/s. For all three data rates, the tolerable limits for transmission over 1000 km, 3000 km and·transoceanic distances are defined. A major limitation of these higher bjt rate systems arises from the problem of noise-induced interactions, which is where the.accumulation of timing jitter causes neighbouring dispersion-managed solitons to interact. In addition, the systems become more sensitive to initial conditions as the data rate increases, .. The second part of the work focuses on contrasting the performance of a range of propagation regimes, from quasi-linear through to soliton-like propagation at 40 Gbit/s for both single channel and WDM dispersion managed transmission. The results indicated that whilst the optimal single channel performance was achieved for soliton-like propagation, the optimal WDM performance was achieved for propagation regime that lay between quasi-linear and soliton-like.

This paper reports the Rayleigh scattering effects in ultra-long Raman fibre laser. It has been found that in a long fibre cavity (-100 km) the distributed feedback due to Rayleigh back scattering at propagation of light between fibre Bragg grating reflectors may be comparable with the lumped feedback provided by the FBG itself. As a result, Raman lasing in the fibre span limited by lumped (FBG) reflector at one side only appears possible due to significant reflection from the RS-based "random" distributed mirror at the other side. Thus, it concludes that a distributed Rayleigh scattering "random" mirror can form a cavity together with a single FBG spliced to the opposite cavity end.

A comparison is offered between the performance of ultra-longlasers and standard bi-directional distributed amplification schemes in nonrepeated transmission. Links based on both traditional (SMF/DCF) and modern Ultrawave transmissionfibers are considered.

An ultra high vacuum system capable of attaining pressures of 10-12 mm Hg was used for thermal desorption experiments. The metal chosen for these experiments was tantalum because of its suitability for thermal desorption experiments and because relatively little work has been done using this metal. The gases investigated were carbon monoxide, hydrogen and ethylene. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters relating to the desorption reaction were calculated and the values obtained related to the reaction on the surface. The thermal desorption reaction was not capable of supplying all the information necessary to form a complete picture of the desorption reaction. Further information was obtained by using a quadrupole mass spectrometer to analyse the desorbed species. The identification of the desorbed species combined with the value of the desorption parameters meant that possible adatom structures could be postulated. A combination of these two techniques proved to be a very powerful tool when investigating gas-metal surface reactions and gave realistic values for the measured parameters such as the surface coverage, order of reaction, the activation energy and pre-exponential function for desorption. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were also used to investigate the effect of the gases on the metal surface.

We report on a theoretical study of an interferometric system in which half of a collimated beam from a broadband optical source is intercepted by a glass slide, the whole beam subsequently being incident on a diffraction grating and the resulting spectrum being viewed using a linear CCD array. Using Fourier theory, we derive the expression of the intensity distribution across the CCD array. This expression is then examined for non-cavity and cavity sources for different cases determined by the direction from which the slide is inserted into the beam and the source bandwidth. The theoretical model shows that the narrower the source linewidth, the higher the deviation of the Talbot bands' visibility (as it is dependent on the path imbalance) from the previously known triangular shape. When the source is a laser diode below threshold, the structure of the CCD signal spectrum is very complex. The number of components present simultaneously increases with the number of grating lines and decreases with the laser cavity length. The model also predicts the appearance of bands in situations not usually associated with Talbot bands.

We report on the problems encountered when replacing a tungsten filament lamp with a laser diode in a set-up for displaying Talbot bands using a diffraction grating. It is shown that the band pattern is rather complex and strong interference signals may exist in situations where Talbot bands are not normally expected to appear. In these situations, the period of the bands increases with the optical path difference (OPD). The visibility of bands as dependence on path imbalance is obtained by suitably obstructing halfway into the arms of a Michelson interferometer using opaque screens.
